Before changing the name and rides, Disney-MGM Studios was a favorite theme park of mine. What happened to it?

At the time both the Disney MGM Studios and Universal Studios Florida opened the hope was that Orlando would become Hollywood East.

I still call it Disney-MGM Studios, though mainly because it's been over twenty years since I last visited the park. I have a lot of fond memories of going on Muppet-Vision 3D, Star Wars, The Great Movie Ride and the backlot tour. But that's the thing with theme parks. They have to evolve and try to appeal to the current park goers, but in a way that doesn't feel pandering. Great overview. Watching these sorts of theme park videos always help give me insight into what's going on, since I haven't been to an amusement park in so long.

I miss the great movie ride, the stunt car show, the backlot tour, etc. 😭 I hate what they’ve done with Hollywood studios it used to be my favorite but they’ve turned the whole theme of the park into Star Wars and when I think of Disney I don’t think Star Wars 😭 I’ll admit the ride is cool but the park is no where near where it used to be. I miss the old Hollywood theme and it’s just not there anymore which is sad cause the park is literally called Hollywood studios. It was greet before and I get you need to make changes but Star Wars and getting rid of the great movie ride the stunt car show and the backlot tour weren’t the changes that needed to be made 😭

Hollywood Studios is now a shell of its former self. If they get rid of Muppetvision 3D then that’ll be the saddest day ever.

I too adore Bob Iger turning Disney into a soulless megacorporation that owns half of the industry and has forgotten the very concept of originality.

I think they found a sweet spot in the late 90s when they were still holding on to the theme of a real working studio (even if it felt pretend) but had some thrill rides, neater themed restaurants and the Fantasmic and action shows. It became less interesting when they started to take away the studio attractions in the 2010s.

The concept of the park being an actual movie studio and animation house was amazing, but it just didn't work out. Nobody is going to Florida to make movies.

Didn’t work out? That’s what made it amazing, this Star Wars thing isn’t working out. Look at the facts they lost money cause of it and it didn’t turn out how they expected. Everyone I talk to misses that movie studio theme and everyone I see on the internet feels the same. You’re crazy 😂

Excellent overview on the theme park. I’m really enjoying these What Happened to videos. I’ve been to both Disneyland and Disney World but I wasn’t aware of the details surrounding them. Also, congratulations on getting a thousand subscribers! Hope you get many more!

As a kid in the 90s, I thought MGM studios was boring as wet bread. There weren't any thrill rides and the studio theme wasn't interesting.

For me the best part of Disney world was riding the tea cups but Epcot was my ultimate favorite I loved the fireworks at Disney world. I also loved the animals at the safari park at Epcot and at Busch gardens. Crestons wife speaking.

You lost me with that take on EPCOT. First off, the city was never still on the drawing board when the park opened it had long since been consigned to the scrap heap of ideas because only Walt could have pulled that off. And second, EPCOT was supposed to be its own realm free from the Disney character intrusion and what Eisner did on that front has ruined the park forever. I appreciated the Magic Kingdom for its own distinctiveness and I enjoyed Disney-MGM for its own distinctiveness but the "educational" tone of EPCOT was its own distinctiveness and I wouldn't take a single one of the post-94 attractions of the Eisner era over what used to exist there.
@CinephileStudios
@CinephileStudios 5 жыл бұрын
I was meaning more in the terms that, regardless of what anyone says, the changes Eisner made did make the park overall more successful. Personally, I'd rather have the Disney Epcot design, I really think his idea would've succeeded in the end, but in a world with no Walt, they went for commercial success when Eisner came in. It still worked for their economic goals, but one can only imagine a world where the vision stayed true to Walt's.
@CinephileStudios
@CinephileStudios 5 жыл бұрын
And from what I've read and heard in the past, the "prototype city" was still going to be a thing if Epcot ended up being successful. Allegedly, that's why the park is so large and had so much space between pavilions, apparently they were going to build the city around it to live-up to Walt's dream, but then the park tanked.
@epaddon
@epaddon 5 жыл бұрын
The space between the pavilions was meant for more countries. Africa was supposed to open the following year but then they ran into the problem of lack of investors. Spain and Israel were on the drawing boards and never came off. Germany, England and Japan were not supposed to be devoid of actual attractions. Yes, the park struggled but the city vision basically died with Walt.
@CinephileStudios
@CinephileStudios 5 жыл бұрын
@@epaddon I knew that about the countries, but the other installations in the front half of Epcot were also spaced out. Problem is, I don't quite know where this would be cited, but I thought that I remembered that was still a minor plan, but who's plan it was and what extent, or if any of it was actually legit or just for the media to be told, who knows.
