Yes, it's really cringe seeing him imply people from the Levant and Iran are browner than they really are. He doesn't understand what he's implying is actually pretty offensive to them, because they don't want to be perceived as racially distinct from Caucasians.

I know you want to focus on 2010's Disney films that failed but honestly this trend more or less kinda started around 2008- 2009 with movies like Race to Witch Mountain and G-Force. You should probably talk about films around that era. not only were Disney trying to emulate the success of Pirates but they seemed to be trying to replicate other movies like Transformers.

@onbearfeet It just makes the film sound so much less interesting. It's like making a film about Lawrence of Arabia, but you leave out the "of Arabia" part. Who would be impressed with that? What's meant to draw in the audience if the name of your film sounds so dull?

So this movie was already failing when my dad and I decided to go see it. It was… good. Like… real good lol. We both loved it! I was so disappointed how audiences had acted towards it. My boyfriend at the time had read the books and saw the film. He said it was somewhat faithful and he was fine with it. As someone who never read the books, my dad and I loved it. Sad it failed so badly. Now… Prince of Persia??? Garbage trash fire. Way to take a really beautiful captivating fairytale and turn it into something so bullshit I could seriously barely recognize the end product. Wtf??? The game had this PERFECT story. The first game anyways.. (the sequel kinda shit alllll over the first game). But the first game was so perfect, they’d only need to FUCKING ADAPT IT. Why in the absolute fuck would they change SOOOO MUCH!?!?!????!!! The princess? wtf??? She was so fucking bland and just this white chick with a British accent???? WTF?!?! In game shes this beautiful slave who breaks free and ends up having this truly earned romance with our prince. Then at the end the Prince is telling her the story of his adventure so they could stop it from happening. That’s perfect! She doesn’t remember her adventures with him but she hears all about it and I believe ends up feeling for the Prince again even though they didn’t have that same journey.

This movie completely ignored the original plot. Sands of time is a critically acclaimed game and is easily one of the best games made by Ubisoft. Had the makers stuck with the original plot, the movie would have done well and would have given Disney the opportunity to make additional sequels with Warrior Within and Two Thrones.
@ProjectKhopesh
@ProjectKhopesh 7 ай бұрын
I suspect they wouldn't have gone into R rated territory with The Warrior Within and Two Thrones, if we're talking about faithfulness to the source. That said, I agree, Sands of Time is *right there* and it's great. Then again, Disney also completely failed to do the smart thing and adapt the Thrawn trilogy over in Star Wars. It's kind of a Thing with them; take a beloved IP and mangle it, trying to cash in on the existing fans, while futzing around with it enough to reveal their contempt for the source and the audience.
@OlgaZuccati
@OlgaZuccati 6 ай бұрын
@@ProjectKhopesh i mean, movies can be unfaithful to the source material and still be successful, the issue is that there was barely any artistic vision behind it, it was just a movie constructed by executives based entirely on perceived trends (which is basically how most disney movies are made these days).

I don't blame them for that, it would have been kind of hard to make a movie where only 3 characters exists (and one of them hardly has screentime), and the entire thing is platforming, traps, and fighting mindless monsters, with no real twists, the plotline of SoT is a bit too basic for a feature lenght movie. They still had the plot point that drove the events of Warrior Within, and that would would lend itself better to an actual 1:1 adaptation if they ever got to that.

As a kid, I loved this movie. I made my parents take me to the cinema three times just for it. I had the comic book, too (back then, Disney used to make comic books that followed the exact same story of their movies, I believe Pirates had a comic also). There were also a lot of political overtones that were annoying. Thinly veiled criticism of George Bush and the "war for oil." Not that I didn't hate that war but hacky criticism in a blockbuster film is annoying. Jake G looks fine, ethnically, for this role btw. His facial features are a bit more European than a locals would be but his skin tone ia pretty close to Persia. Iran actually means "home of the Aryans" as a reference to Europeans and Persians having common steppe ancestors. Theyre similar peoples. Other groups in that area such as Arabs are much darker which is probably why you're confused

Man, Alfred Molina's character has to be the only thing I truly remember from this movie. Well, that and the fact that despite it being called "The Sands of Time" the darn things only show up twice in the movie. A lot of squandered potential for what was one of the main mechanics in the game. Imagine if Mario had only jumped twice in his movie. This film was such a disappointment for me. I don't hate it, but I find it so forgettable.

I just watched it again after several years. It's an OK action flick, the kind of thing you'd like to watch as a repeat again every 5 years. Yet not as memorable as an actual genre classic.

I didn't like it because it was a bad adaptation of the source material. The game Sands of Time. Also because of the other reason you mentioned. But they went so much away from the core story of the game which is sad. I love the time trilogy. You should play the game it's a bit outdated by today's standards but it is a good 2000s gaming classic

There’s a massive hoodoo over video game films and I’m not sure why. They have a built in audience, for a start. But they also have an established cinematic world. It should be incredibly straightforward. But for some reason producers and directors decide to complete forget that and try to create something else. I can only assume they’ve never played video games or are trying to impress their children or something. Hopefully we’re far enough into the 21st century that people making films now actually played the games and have a love for them when they’re recreating them as films. I hold out a very shallow hope, but I suppose it’s possible

I always find Jerry Bruckheimer’s movies he’s involved with interesting, even the terrible movies he’s produced like Kangaroo Jack, Pearl Harbor, and G-Force, Gemini Man, & The Lone Ranger there’s something fascinating about them you can’t turn away from. And at least you remember them unlike Disney’s Wish for better or worse.

I remember enjoying the movie as a kid and rewatched it about a year ago - it still was enjoyable, though not fantastic. I definitely see where someone is coming from for not enjoying it - some ofthe editing was questionable, especially when it comes to the action scenes. From what I can remember, the games didn't have a lot of slower moments either - though the movie could have used more.

So, people didn’t like the movie partly because of the actor’s skin color? How racist of them, they should’ve been more open minded. It’s a fictional story after all, with time travel, a white guy in the Middle East isn’t the wildest thing. He looks about as much a part of the scenery as black people in Viking villages and a black Anne Boleyn, I don’t see what all the fuss was about…
@hartfartpoptart

I think all of those are bad simply because of the historical and geographical setting. If it was pure fantasy, or if there was an in-story explanation for a character of that race being there, there would be no problem. It's just nonsensical to put a white guy in medieval Persia or a black guy in medieval Scandinavian without pretence.

You failed to consider this: that 14 year old me LOVED this movie. The main actress is one of the most beautiful women in the world, and I was very invested in the character drama as it really felt like the brothers loved each other and their father. And the No-consequences but Yes-character-growth ending made me feel happy. That being said, I’m not disagreeing with anything you said about the editing

I was a 12 year old kid who just started getting addicted to video games when this movie came out( I'd say the perfect target audience, no?) and it completely floored me. I thought about it for days. Sure, in retrospect it's not very good, but it hit the mark where it needed to. According to imdb, the box office profits weren't even that bad. It's just that crazy , unexplained budget that was the main problem.

I wonder how much of an impact Assassin's Creed had. By 2010, Prince of Persia was considered old hat. Gamers had collectively moved beyond the franchise. At least the younger ones, who this movie needed to capture.

As a LEGO fan I know all of these forgotten failures. Don’t misunderstand me, I haven’t actually watched them. But if there’s one certainty it is if there’s a Disney movie flop (Prince of Persia, The Lone Ranger, Tron Legacy, Hocus Pocus) then LEGO will make some banger sets based on them.

Pirates of the Caribean had many elements in its history, tone, visuals and characters (at least you know who) that make very unique to other pirates films, that was why it was a big sucess. Many of this failed next big thing like John Carter and the Sorcerer´s apprentice were very standard entries of their genres, why is the reason the were never able to grasp a big audience

100% disagree with your take on the movie. It might not be perfect, but it's so much fun and totally deserved at least one sequel. It's somewhat telling though that it did much better outside the US. Guess it's still true that Americans just don't care about anything not directly related to them.

Tbh John Carter, prince of Persia, eragon, treasure planet, Atlantis,gods of Egypt, all need to be revisited all great concepts of that have endless amount depth, just take your time, no release date until you actually have a concrete plan, no gimmicks take more realistic John wick approach, focus on character development and concepts that are prevalent to the film no comparison with other movies cause people expecting will be sky high but it’s sad to see

Yeah, the story of the sequel game Warrior Within is a lot more substantial, and I think it would have been more adaptable to movie than Sands of Time. So I completely undestand that they departed heavily from the story of the first part (which is quite basic in the game).
