Speaking of "Hidden Messages," one I have noticed in this film has to do with Maui giving Moana his ore. Most people will recognize it as a symbol of him showing his approval that she can take charge of the boat as well as the journey. What most won't recognize this as a symbol of is Maui's love for Moana. Before giving her the ore he looks at the side of it that has his heart etched in it, then gives it to her, technically symbolizing him giving her his actual heart as well as the role of lead wayfinder for the journey.
