For some reason, I have been watching Recess episodes for the past few days. For context, I am a 20-something year old who used watch this show growing up. Back then it was one of my favorite shows and watching it now, it still is! The show is actually really smart though. This episode, in particular, is really a commentary on beauty pageants and how kids are affected by them. Beauty pageants create a caricature of childs true self since the child is often trained (usualy by a parent) to say certain things or to practice a talent. This is all to win a beauty contest which is an inauthentic and stressful experience for the child. This is not always true but in general, most kids are not out there doing beauty pageants by choice. A lot of time, the parent would convince them to do it. Vince in this episode represents the obsessed parent who will Bootcamp their kid through endless routines in order for them to win the beauty pagent. Also, the part where the teacher was talking about Amelia Earhart and how those paparazzi people came is so smooth. As a child I did not bother paying attention to that but it is smart. Basically commenting on how society places value on a girl by her beauty and not by her intelligence or achievements.

Well, if the entire finals went in a similar way as Ashley Q basically repeating the whole "If I win, I will do..." reasoning word for word, the latter and Ashley A most likely weren't being authentic. Plus that it's hinted that previous winners have basically followed a "formula" for how to win, whereas Spinelli presumably broke the mold

It's like that episode of The Simpsons called "Lisa The Beauty Queen" when Homer enters Lisa in the Little Miss Springfield pageant. Bart helps teach Lisa to walk in heels, and when Lisa asks if he thinks she can win, he keeps walking around in heels, and says "Hey, I'm starting to think I can win!" So a boy in heels isn't such a big deal if they're trying to help out a girl in a beauty contest.

Love looking back on this show and how unusually progressive it was in many ways. A cast as diverse as kids tv back then might get, yet a lot of stereotypes but also a lot of subversions, including most of the male characters at some point showing off typically feminine or gentle behaviour without giving a shit XD look ad Vince owning those heels like a pro and overseeing most of Spinelli’s pageant training
