That’s why it’s important to actually watch the movies and not just the cheesy merch. We can easily forget why these characters strike a cord with us and what can be learned when we focus on the wrong elements

I mean Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora were destined in a different time when women were viewed much differently. Snow White was to represent being a good housewife, Walt Disney himself actually connected with Cinderella because of her story, and Aurora was meant to be the most fairytale like being a damsel in distress waiting for her prince to rescue her. Ariel was made when women were shown to be more independent and not below men, hence why she’s a stubborn and feisty mermaid who made some reckless decisions to get away from her father’s overprotective rules. Personally I feel the first empowered princess is Pocahontas considering she is the hero of her story, while yes John Smith was willing to die instead of her father it was her actions and refusal to back down that helped her father see the error of his ways, that getting revenge for Kocuom’s murder wasn’t gone to bring him back or solve anything, but bring more hatred and destruction for both her people and the invaders who upon seeing John Smith being released rebelled against Radcliffe, showing they only came to battle for their friend and comrade. Belle yes is the one of the first to show independence but she’s the hero in a different way. I think what set Pocahontas apart from other princesses is that she made a heartbreaking but mature decision in choosing to stay with her people over being with the man she loves, knowing they’d probably never see each other ever again. She wanted to be with him more than anything, but she did the right thing no matter how much it hurt both of them to let each other go. As much as the ending completely shattered and crushed my heart I still admire and slightly appreciate she doesn’t give up her life/people especially considering she’s the future chief of her tribe, for someone she didn’t know for long despite her entire tribe knew how amazing and selfless he was considering he saved their chief, so at least she wasn’t being like Ariel who was willing to give up everything for someone she had a crush on and didn’t even know her name until last night, let alone they only spent like 1 1/2 days together, and Eric fell in love with her voice instead of who she was without it
