Sadly, nothing really changed. It is at least as bad, if not worse. Heck, I drive in the slow lane and people get ticked at me for driving the speed limit. It’s like people don’t understand that the limit is the top speed legally allowed. It isn’t the starting point. There are also the people who drive as if the road is a race track. Weaving through traffic at high speeds, mere inches of space between vehicles in some cases. Tailgaters galore. Driving a few feet behind another vehicle. As if they could stop in time to avoid a horrific collision. The police and highway patrol need to start ticketing these reckless drivers. Instead of just letting them get away with it.

I couldn't agree more! My driving instructor continually pointed out that the speed limit is 'the limit' not the speed to aim to drive at! While I don't think that people's driving has got that bad here I cannot remember the last time I saw a patrol car parked up waiting to ticket someone for anything from faulty break lights to speeding. Yes,we have speed cameras now, but there are plenty of other dangerous driving practices that no-one bothers with anymore. We had a few cars during COVID who were checking number plates to demand why people weren't in their home areas and then we were all trying to remember how long it was since we'd seen them. I don't know if you have driving courses in America? We have a system where if you are caught speeding, but only just over the limit, you can either get points on your licence, which quickly become enough to lose it,or you can take a day course in driving safely. They're actually a good idea, especially for us who have been driving for many years and can get into bad habits. They have a very good success rate too. They may be a reason for the roads staying quite safe even without a police car hidden every few miles.

@@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts yes, but its also extremely frustrating when people decide to dawdle along at 20 or 30 below the limit... or when a road that was fine at 80, or 90 for decades suddenly is suddenly reduced to 50 for absolutely no reason. and a speed camera thrown up for good measure. that reeks of revenue raising. if it was about safety, why not trim the trees obscuring intersections? or place road signs intelligently? or maybe repair the potholes, off camber corners, or the hundreds of other shortcomings of road networks? ffs, i recall one major intersection on a one way street, the sign pointed the WRONG WAY for over two years... yet someone ERECTED that sign, screwed it to a pole, and got PAID to do so... where are the police? the only ones worth their pay cheque QUIT during the lockdowns. now theyve reduced the barrier to qualify and we get some REAL criminals walking around with guns legally...

It's true that cars don't drive themselves, although they're working on that. But it's also true that the design of cities and roads makes a difference in how people drive on them. Look up what a "stroad" is. It's also true that safety features can make a driver feel more secure and more willing to be reckless and take risks than he would without those safety features. So it's important to understand the driver's psychology when designing cars and roads, and not nearly enough of that has happened, I think.

The most ubiquitous & practical form of transportation prior to the automobile was rail transport, which is what replaced the horse & buggy, only to once again be upended by cars. And even in that case it took massive government expenditure to do that; specifically Eisenhower's US Highway initiative.

Funny that this should be made during the 50s, the same decade when General Motors and other automobile manufacturers bought out all of the streetcars and buses. It was also the same decade where the interstate highway system killed most public transportation. This is just as relevant today as it was in the 1950’s. People do not pay attention to what is going on around them. Lack of turn signal usage, speeding, tailgating, crossing solid white lines that take the place of a dotted white line, crossing painted on medians, running red lights are all common place as so many think that the traffic law’s regulations and rules are for everyone else. It’s ridiculous that the simplest things that are mandatory by law people do not follow them but blame everyone else for their own stupidity when a traffic incident occurs because they cased it.

I eatched a documentary about these giant Pick Ups. It turned out they make people drive less carefull at best. And than the "luttle animal on the side of the road test": They put toys on the road. They filmed who passed by. Most of the Truck drivers tried to ☠️ the animal. When stopped and asked why they went out of their way to ☠️ a small animal all of the had that weird psychopathic stare, and thst fake Mr. Beast Grin. "Because it's fun!"
