Carl and Ellie's life as a married couple in the movie, UP. Carl and Ellie had grand plans to go to South America and have a house overlooking Paradise Falls, but things always derailed their goal. This emotional scene tells the story of how Ellie and Carl aged and sadly, Ellie passed away unable to bear a child or fulfill her and Carl's dream. This scene made me cry...
All rights to Pixar, Disney and UP.

That reminds me of my sadness that I'm facing up till now. I stood up for a shy Bulgarian Lev Tahor girl who was bullied and the students. I was looking forward to see the process complete only to see her die during the wedding. Now I can't live with myself.

It's why I think it's always worthwhile to make sure you see some of the classic silent movies (for me, particularly Chaplin - for example, 'City Lights' and 'Modern Times')... from a time when you had to tell the story through your actions instead of relying on dialog. It's the same with listening to old radio programs and reading novels - it's about how your imagination 'fills in the gaps' ... and does so in a very personal way.

I have watched this movie at least 50 times over the past 14 years and I still ugly cry every single time. I work in senior living and have been fortunate to know several real life Carls and Ellies and hear their life stories and watch all of their little lifelong quirks and routines they have shared together for 60+ years. One couple is in their upper 80's and they have been going for a morning walk together every morning for more than 60 years.❤ One couple I swear literally WAS Carl and Ellie. The man was always the quiet, timid one, and his wife was always so outgoing and silly, loved to laugh and make jokes. She was always right there ready to help with anything, never afraid to get her hands dirty. She died just short of their 74th wedding anniversary and the grief that the man suffered was so heartbreaking. He wrote her a letter every night before going to bed for the year after she died to help process his grief. He compiled it into a book and gave me a copy before he died of COVID after his 100th birthday. It is my prized possession and I HOPE his family has it published someday. No author could write a better love story if they tried. He was active, spry, and sharp as a tack til the very end. I miss them both so much.

The part that really gets me is later in the movie, when Carl is sitting alone in his house that has been transported to Paradise Falls, then picks up his and Ellie's book after having never touched it since Ellie's death. Carl turns to where there were empty pages reserved for his and Ellie's adventure photos to go for their long-planned trip to Paradise Falls, titled "Stuff I'm Going To Do," only for him to be astonished to see that Ellie had secretly placed all of her own photos of them together over the years, having placed the photos there while she was dying in the hospital. The final photo that she had placed there was of her and Carl sitting next to each other in their chairs holding hands, with her handwritten note: "Thanks for the adventure - now go have a new one! Love, Ellie." As if this first sequence weren't enough to wreck me...

One of the saddest parts besides Ellie’s death is when Carl looks at the painting, then at Ellie, and he thinks “oh no, we’ve been planning this adventure ever since we were kids but now we’re getting really old, will this ever happen?” And when it does actually happen, Ellie’s not there to see it.

He goes to buy tickets to the place, which is where the falls is at. He waits up the hill, their usual picnic spot, excited to tell her. But she, metaphorically and physically in that moment, does not make it. She falls down, he runs down the hill to her. She dies. Passing the adventure book to him, like saying, carry my adventure on for me, live it through, make our dream come true. Which he does. In the end, the house, rests atop the Paradise Falls. The house representing her soul being satisfied upon reaching the place of her dreams.

My sister has a similar problem because after she had her two boys with her husband, she couldn't have any more kids. Every time she gets pregnant, she always loses them. The doctor let her know that she couldn't have any more kids. My mother told her to stop trying because it's painful for my sister when she loses them. It's not that my sister wants any more kids, it's just something she's open to if she gets pregnant. But at least she has her two sons. Can't say the same for everyone.

You can’t call somebody a traitor for divorcing you because the entire point of marriage to have stability for the family. If u can’t have a family, the relationship can still have love but it can grow because growth is internal and external and you have no kid to give love to. Everyone wants their own kid with their DNA and to look like them so adoption isn’t an option for most people. It’s called having values and desires and making a hard choice over you being a slave to your emotions and attachments. @@Jdot2tact From a marital perspective, it is betrayal… Marriage is supposed to symbolise the unity between two people (“to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. I will love and honor you all the days of my life”) and when you don’t want to be with that person anymore because of a mediocre reason like them not satisfying your existential needs, then yes you didn’t love that person at all at the end of the day and you’ve broken your vows. And it’s especially heartbreaking to think that the person you thought you could trust the most is willing to leave you once you both find out that you’re infertile… When you think things cannot get worse after you find out you cannot have children, then your own husband gives up on you.

@@Jdot2tact. That's just you being an asshole. My husband stays with me and we are Carl and Ellie. It's called loyalty and love. Just because you have a kid means nothing. Any loser can have a kid. Not everyone has love. My guess is your baby mama doesn't even want you around.

I just got married a few weeks ago and recently heard the backing score "Married Life" playing. At first, I was like, "Oh yeah! Up! Great movie!" ... and then that music got soft at the end. Didn't even need to re-watch this to immediately be broken internally. I love my wife so much. The thought alone of just waking up to her not being there anymore, as Carl experiences here, instantly brought me to tears. Not that I needed any more motivation to work towards it, but I'm going to work as hard as I can to make sure our marriage is as good as theirs was.

This is honestly super sweet. It is heartbreaking in the end but they were happy together for decades. This is how all couples should spend their lives. Their only regret was not having kids and even though they dreamed of going to Paradise Falls, they were able to make their own paradise. It’s scenes like this you need to be older to understand it’s beauty.

Ellie was sweet, passionate, a romantic, and was head over heels over her husband, who wasn't especially charismatic, wealthy, or good looking . Although she herself wasn't very pretty, everyone loved her, most of her husband. She would have been an amazing mother. How amazing would this world be if there were more who wanted to be like her, instead of what we have today.

The part that gets me is how the first time they went up on the hill for a picnic, the background just had a steeple and was green with trees. I absolutely love the love of Carl and Ellie. I was sad at 1:27 when Ellie was infertile (can't have children). But at least Carl at 1:43-1:59 cheered Ellie up by reminding and promising their dream home (Paradise Falls)
@waves2378
@waves2378 8 ай бұрын
She wasn’t infertile, she miscarried. They wouldn’t have started creating a nursery unless they knew a baby was on the way. And we probably saw the reason she miscarried: the paint. In the early and mid 20th century, lead paint was commonly used in homes and it also increased the rate of miscarriages. Ellie was the one painting the room while Carl worked on the furniture.

To be honest, adopting is a tough decision to make that is different from having your own child (at least that's how I think of it). Besides, Carl seems to be sort of experiencing his new life with Russell as him treating him as his grandson (so he is taking care of someone)

They make their money selling balloons at a zoo. Obviously, they do OK with it, but adopting is expensive and not always a guarantee. I have heard adoptive parents say that the wait is comparable to labor because you put so much effort into having the child and they can still be taken away from you for weeks even after the process is seemingly done.
