Hey Jen! Love this video. Thank you for the great information. I do have a question. My family are current DVC members at Copper Creek. We bought through Disney in 2018. My husband and I are thinking about buying more points as our family is growing and a Deluxe Studio won’t be big enough. If we purchase through resale at a different resort, how does that work? Will the points flow through to each other when we want to book a bigger room at either of our home resorts? Does that make sense?

@@lauraashleyellison3902 YES. The key here is to make sure you have the same Use Year for both contracts. If that is the case, it will essentially work as one larger contract. If you get a different use year, it will be a pain in the neck and will drive you crazy (I speak from experience;).

We did a ton of research before buying years ago, and went with resale. It’s a no brained to me unless you really want a new resort. Even when we added on, we waited a little bit to get our use year. The cost savings is well worth it and agree that cruises are not worth the point cost.

My family and I have gone to WDW several dozen times over the years and we have visited several resorts either for dining or exploring! We have stayed at all the value resorts and all the moderates but have never been able to pull the trigger on the higher ups or the DVC! All that being said my family and I have fallen in love with The Boardwalk Resort with the Fort WIlderness Lodge coming in at a close second. We are Disney lifers and I think Jen's videos have instilled a little confidence in us as we are now seriously looking at Shontell's website and pricing out points! lol

Hi Jen! I've watched for awhile on my phone and finally remembered to subscribe! I really enjoy all of your Disney/DVC posts. I loved this video - but I miss the ears! Our favorite DVC is Grand Californian. We just managed to get a rental right at the 7 month window for Feb. 2019 and we're soooooo excited! We're looking to get a small Boulder Ridge resale contract some time this year for our future WDW trips. On that note, I created a one page comparison chart for my husband and I help us decide whether to buy or not, and if so, resale v. direct. It's a pros/cons and price comparisons kind of thing. If you plan on doing more pros/cons DVC v. Resale etc., I'd be happy to send it to you. I look forward to seeing more videos!

Um, I guess if you want to spend more money? LOL! Or if you want the newest resort and can't find a resale contract.

Chris the ONLY reason to buy direct from Disney (in my humble opinion) is if you are in a hurry. Resales take about 60 days to close so if you have a trip coming immediately that you plan to use points for....resale won't work and you'll have to pay for the convenience. (Like paying the overnight fee instead of using the regular postal service) Other than that, resale is always the way to go!

I do not have a favorite yet, but I have to name one, Bay Lake Towers. Jen, you were right it was a longer video, but very informative, good job! I have some questions about combining points from multiple contacts. Say you have 2 contacts, is it better to have them both in the same resort or different resorts? Say you have 2 different resort contacts, I assume that you can book in either a year out but only can use the points in the contract for that resort if they aren’t the same Use Year. Or can you combine your points from both contacts on a single trip? I am assuming the Use Year has a big effect on this. You indicated that when having multi contracts you want to have the same Use Year for all. I am guessing that would eliminate this hassle of when you book your trips. Can you expand on this?

so109523 I will try! The advantage of having two different resorts is you’d have home resort advantage (11 months) for both resorts. But you can only combine them at the 7 month mark if it’s two different resorts. If they are the same, having the same use year is important as you can combine both contracts at the 11 month mark. Honestly this aspect is still a little confusing to me so I will welcome Shontell’s input!! Great questions and thanks for watching!!

Jen, thanks for the reply, that makes sense, I know one of your contracts is a Vero Beach, is your 2nd one there also? Do they have the same use year? I can see where that would be an advantage. I wouldn't mind having two contracts myself, but I feel that one should be a direct purchase from Disney so I get the membership perks that come with a direct contract. I know that Shontell said that Disney only buys at 5% of the resale contracts, do they in turn sell them? If so, how do you get one of them and if you purchase one direct from Disney, does it come with the same perks as buying new from Disney?

I was wondering about the maintenance fees and the monthly dues and how those factor in. I think I am getting a good understanding of the point purchase price but I would like some more info on what the monthly dues and the yearly maintenance fees can add up to be in addition to the purchase price. Please keep this series up. It has answered more of our questions then the two sit down meetings we have had with our local DVC rep.

I'm so glad the videos have helped! So, there is an annual dues list on the DVC by Resale website (link in show notes) that will tell you all the dues for each resort. Our home resort, Vero Beach, has one of the highest (because of hurricanes, evidently) and definitely consider that when picking your home resort as that is the amount you'll pay every year of your contract. In our case, it ends up being about $1400/year. Hope that helps!

Dues "average" about $6.50 per point but specifics for each resort are on our website. If you buy 100 points X 6.50 = $650 per year divided by 12 equals $54 per month. Double that if you buy 200 points. They do go up typically each year so keep that in mind. I hope that helps some!

No. You will get that money refunded if the deal doesn't go through. Great question!

Great question, Melinda. We include in writing in the contract that your deposit is absolutely returned if Disney steps in and buys it! The only thing you've lost is "time" and that particular contract. We can actually transfer the deposit to another contract if you want to try again.

Yes, you can trade resale points into RCI. You just can't trade them into the "Disney collection" or "concierge collection" resorts. However, all of those trades are a terrible value, so it's not recommended!

I am so torn, and honestly I have limited experience in all of the DVC resorts. When I was a child we did our 1st big Disney vacation at the polynesian and it has always been the one I've remembered most and wanted to go back to. However, I'm considering buying DVC resale now and I am torn between ones that may be more in my price range, such as AKL or OKW, but for which I'd still enjoy the theming. We have an AKL trip scheduled next year, and I'm hoping to try beach club sometime, too (BC for renting points).

Been looking into purchasing resale and I have found really good deals when you buy Vero Beach properties. To be honest I don’t really plan to go there, But the deals are almost to good to pass up. You mentioned it being difficult to get on the Disney property when you don’t have your home resort there. Have you ever not been able to book? Also do you find it hard to book Aulani?

Trevin - the only type villa we've struggled with booking are villas and they can be tough really year round at the 7 month mark. It's frankly why we're selling one of our vero contracts (we have two). The other BIG thing with Vero and why I don't think you should buy there unless you intend to stay there is that the dues are the highest of all the DVC resorts (because #hurricanes;). That makes it not a good deal long term even though you save a lot on initial purchase - over the life of the contract you erase those savings in annual dues. Aulani is actually not that hard to book and although we've never stayed there, I've checked availability and always been able to find something even as close as 4 - 5 months out. Always subject to change, though!

I would love to be able to afford this as a business write off.... Problem is, I'm a subcontractor with my own business in Florida.... That being said, ( subcontractor in Florida ) from my observation , unless you are making in excess of $150000 a year none of this crap is worth it.... Me and my wife looked into this 3 years ago... My observation, if you and your wife doesn't make more than $150000 a year , just say screw it ... Rent out the cabins for a week in the Campgrounds, go to your local butcher ( I'm on the west coast) cook your own food and stay in the cabins.... I come to Disney once a year and everything of course is overpriced and as far as DVC... ( Even rented points, good luck affording it) I'll go once a year, pay for the cabins, cook my own food and not feel like I'm being taken advantage of and or cook my own food .... thanks, but I'm a business man who simply can't afford DVC, resale or otherwise.... There are definitely less expensive options for going to Walt Disney World than any of the Deluxe properties. But then again the best way to save money is not to go on vacation at all. I personally don't feel taken advantage of by Disney but if you would feel that way, then its definitely not for you. And we LOVE the cabins! Ft. Wilderness is one of my favorite places on earth. Great question, Kathe. The smaller "add-on" contracts of 125 or less are pretty hard to come by. Priced right, they sell within minutes of our newsletter going out. Please subscribe on the website and then hopefully the right one will come along quickly. When it does, just click and buy. Since you are already familiar with the process, it should be easy peasy!
