Hmm... been awhile since I made this, but I'm pretty sure I was referring to his hand-to-hand combat based on his performance in the first film when that was mentioned and at least as far as I can recall, not much is actually known about the war he survived or what methods he used to make it out. I also think him reaching the rank of captain was for a different reason than what I was focusing on. I do think I should revisit this match in the future to clear up those statements.

Wait so you said that Shang is a good fighter because of his skills instead of his strength? Boy, did you see those broad shoulders? Shang is fuckin ripped. And when he picks up Mulan's weights after she almost faints? That guy is a beast. I'd like to see Phoebus in Shang's training camp. He'd get the shit kicked out of him. Also, Shang pulls a Hun arrow out of his shoulder with little more than a flinch. There's more durability for you. Oh and he survives falling into a chasm to save Mulan. And you forgot bow and arrow, dagger, and throwing star as weapons.

Although he was strong, his abilities in combat emphasized technique over brute strength. What I was saying there pertained to him not focusing on strength alone. If you have seen Mulan 2, you should remember him taking down several guys with martial arts training rather than overwhelming them like a juggernaut. Wasn't saying he was weak though. Since Phoebus was more of a brawler, his fighting style was more strength oriented which isn't skillful but Phoebus's strength feat is still more impressive than any of Shang's. I will say I did forget to mention the chasm, which changes a few things, but overall the outcome would remain the same. As for the additional weapons, I mostly confined them to their swords to make it a fair fight, meant to make note of that.
