Sonic and the Secret Rings was originally planned to be a Wii port of Sonic 06 but somehow got retooled into its own game as part of a Storybook Series. The game was originally bashed for various reasons, and while it still is by some, many have looked at it in a much more positive light. Now Charriii5’s video on it may be an old one, but that doesn’t stop it from being pretty bad. It’s not as bad as his Sonic Adventure 2 video, but its still heavily flawed. And this time, a fan of mine has joined me to help correct his mistakes.

One of the reasons that Sonic 06 was rushed is that when the Wii port of Sonic 06 was cancelled, the entire dev team for Sonic 06 was split into two to work on both Sonic 06 and Sonic and The Secret Rings. In the end, both games were not well received at all and are strongly disliked by most Sonic fans.

I enjoy the game. However in the Sinbad cutscene the game just suddenly says that the Game Disc could not be read… I really need to clean the disc when I can… Update: The disc has been cleaned and today was the same day I got Black Knight.

Just like 06, I never got a chance to play this cause I was still just a baby. When I finally got a phone, I found out about this game because of ProsafiaGaming. I'm still gonna play it, if I can, or just look at KZbin, but in the meantime, I just like the idea of Sonic going inside bookstories and living the story just if he was the main character, his friends as the side characters of that story, I love them. They're like, the thing that inspired "fanfics" to exist. I also absolutely love how they found an excuse to bring back the "Chaos Emeralds but they're rings" idea from Knuckles' Chaotix by making this game. ...At least, that's what I assume that happened. I've also seen who is a massive fan of Mario and Sonic complaining about the only thing that makes this game bad being the controls. And I don't kinda judge him, I bet a Wii remote is much more complex than a controller with a joystick, but I'll see about it. And, as a part two to the whole "I like Sonic getting send into books" thing, I'm just sad that it never got continued and got a 3rd story to go through. Some people say it would be Shadow on the Snow Queen story, and I would love to see that happening, I would love to see Shadow making friends with the girl on the story, maybe even help his character, like from the whole PTSD about Maria and his capacity of trusting humans again after Shadow the Hedgehog. I dislike it when people basically ignore the message and themes of the "mountain of handkerchiefs" scene because Sonic fans only ever look at admittedly cheesy dialogue, the wish itself and so on. This scene tackles themes of overcoming grief, the theme of that crying is not weakness, how time heals wounds as Sonic didn't just wish away Shahra's pain. I wrote an entire essay why I love this scene. If only we got more scene likes this that showcased and expanded on Sonic's character. I find that the Storybook Series in general did a good job of showcasing sides of Sonic's personality we don't see very often. In Black Knight, for example, we see his flirtatious side (with Nimue and Percival) and his philosophical side (his speech to Merlina at the end). As for this particular scene, I always liked that it follows directly from Sonic condemning Erazor to a fate worse than death. It's an effective reminder that Sonic is a good person, just not a soft one.

Secret rings. To me this game was alright. I like the music, the story and the party mode. The controls weren’t really that great but it could’ve been worse. I actually managed to get every gold medal and fire soul in this game. It was a living hell.

2:13 - Fun fact: in an interview that Takashi Iizuka gave in 2010 (the same one where he claimed humans and Mobians live on two worlds), he says that Sonic doesn't have a house. Apparently, he forgot about this game (and Sonic Shuffle, and Sonic Battle...) 3:26 - Well, to be fair, he knew he lived inside a video game in Wreck-It Ralph, but that's different, of course. 5:17 - There's a life-size statue of Sonic at the entrance of Tokyo Joypolis. When you push the button on its base, he talks (in Junichi Kanemaru's voice, no less). One of his lines is that he likes to read on rainy days (he even mentions the Arabian Nights by name). 8:50 - Also, in Islam, Iblis is another name for the Devil (which is where the writers of Sonic '06 got the name in the first place). Given that Erazor is an evil genie (a demonic being) himself, it makes sense for him to invoke Iblis. (In that same incantation, he even mentions Jahannam, the Arabic name for Hell.)

And that's a problem. You really shouldn't cover games you haven't played. Yeah, I did so with Sonic Shuffle, but for one, Shuffle is a terrible game. For two, I at least bothered to watch the cutscenes and some reviews to at least get an idea of what the game is like.

I completely agree with 74. We absolutely could've gotten another Story Book Sonic game (I think some people wanted one in Greek Mythology) but yeah, the Sonic fans dunked on it and Black Knight though they were harsher on Secret Rings so SEGA and Sonic Team never bothered to make another Story Book game. And I don't care what anybody will say when I say this, but I consider Secret Rings as one of my favorite Sonic games (yes, the controls are terrible and awkward with Sonic constantly moving forward and the Wii motion controls just being a terrible idea. This game and Black Knight should've been Playstation and/or XBox games or could've done what Colors Wii would do when they made that game). I loved the story, I loved Shahra, Erazor was a good villain (and it was refreshing to see a different villain than Eggman) and I really liked the idea of the game.

I actually really love the whole idea of what SEGA was doing here honestly. What, with combining Sonic with stores from cultures like King Arthur and the Arabrain Nights, seeing as to how Sonic would act in those worlds. Secret Rings and The Black Knight were personally awesome. Sure, controls not might be that good or the gameplay is meh, but it they sure are changes that were good for their time.

Oddly enough Secret Rings was my first Sonic game. Yeah, talk about a weird way to get into the series. The forced motion controls was and still is tedious to play with, but the ost is a major bop to listen to. If SEGA and Sonic Team were given more time I imagine the controls and gameplay would be similar to Black Knight's. That said, the best part of this game to me *has* to be Darkspine Sonic. Not only does the design incorporates the three main elements Sonic uses with the various abilities he can unlock throughout the game but the pyrokinetic powers Sonic gains in that form is theorized to reference both Sonic Wildfire, the early name of Sonic and the Secret Rings (which at one point was going to be Sonic and the Secret of the Rings) and the numerous fire based techniques Sonic uses in his skills. Reminder, in-game fire is represented by a red background icon to increase Sonic's attack power. The colors Sonic gains in his Darkspine form is a deep shade of Indigo (which is a shade inbetween both purple and blue which are the two colors used to represent Wind and Darkness respectively in-game) with his skin turning pale white (the most common color depiction of wind, Sonic's main element in several games). In the cutscene Sonic gains a faint warm reddish/orange aura that changes to a large flaming orange aura both in-game and in the CGI cutscene after the fight with Alf Layla wa-Layla. The golden rings around his wrists and ankles might represent the four World Rings Erazor successfully absorbed which would've been needed to finish the transformation Sonic underwent.

I still disagree that typos aren't Sins. It's one thing to make a mistake in a text message or the first draft of an essay/short story/poem/screenplay/book, but professional finished works aren't supposed to have them, especially collaborative ones. tbh secret rings is imo quite underrated. the story, music (extremely underrated), the levels and darkspine sonic were some of the best parts. definitely not one of the best sonic games but better than 06 and some of the other very bad ones. if the controls were replaced and some of the gameplay reworked (grinding, skills) it could genuinely be a good game.

If there's one thing that ruined Secret Rings: And that's the motion controls with the wiimote Also, i had a friend who did interviewed Mike Pollock aka the voice of Eggman, and he said he didn't recall any of lines being cut in half back in 06 offscreen, anyway your takes are way better than anyone from Minus World, the party mode was pretty ok but they're calling it awful makes me think every single one from Minus World look delusional in a way (Except Simplefilps because he's chill) because calling the party mode "awful" is a bit of an overstatement, it's not my favorite but i had fun playing it back in the day!

@@sussy-sonic Well, to be fair, the president of BioWare did say that Chronicles took inspiration from the comics. The thing is, there should have been no issue with them doing that since the comics were licensed, so all those characters belonged to SEGA (which Penders himself had publicly admitted back in 1999). And don't worry, he's probably not going to sue Paramount. He floated the possibility of doing so on Twitter, but that was almost three months ago. Either he was making an empty threat because he wanted attention (which wouldn't be the first time), or he actually did talk to his lawyers and they told him he was nuts.

3:50 what about Sonic ditching the player if you leave him idle for too long in Sonic CD? I’d call that a true 4th wall break. And if you don’t consider that canon what about Sonic turning to the camera and saying “I’m just going to call them aliens if that’s alright with everybody” in Colors. Or Espio saying “this must be the final stage” during the Egg Emperor fight?

It's just gonna block his timer of the video, which is not so important to look at. You can even put a thicker text outline in it if you like. So, how's that?

So obviously there’s highs and lows like usual, but the one thing that just pressed in my mind the whole time, other than the fact that you cannot compare one guy making a generic video on niche series for a, to be completely honest, small to maybe medium sized audience, to a massive, most definitely million to multi-million dollar company when it comes to making simple spelling mistakes and how much someone would hypothetically be paid to not make said mistakes. Hey, he doesn’t pull in the buck for his amazing grammatical mastery after all, but the spelling checker actually does, so it should be perfect. It’s kinda like if I’m allergic to something, and the man who’s whole job is making sure that that stuff that people may be allergic to doesn’t get into the things it’s not supposed to, but he misses something that’s he’s payed not to miss, we don’t say ‘ah well, couldn’t be helped, it’s no big deal, not like he’s payed not to let that happen or something’, no we make sure it doesn’t happen before, or it doesn’t happen again, but other than that tangent, just like, he said that Sonic SHOULDN’T kick the bomb because something MIGHT happen, not something WILL happen. Just because nothing happened doesn’t mean, originally, it was an absolutely nonsensical play to kick the fatally risky explosive device that could potentially be set off prematurely by even the slightest tap, as they tend to be. It’s like how you say ‘don’t touch the stove, you might get burned’. If you touch it and don’t get burned, then good, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that, bro, you don’t touch the stove, something positively terrible may happen to you, as it may when you kick the bomb. Luckily he didn’t go up in an awful, fatal explosion he couldn’t dodge in midair, but imagine if it did go off and he got exploded. There’s currently no available macguffin to magic him back from the other side, nor will there be if something bad happens to him, so just because he’s currently on borrowed time and potentially isn’t even getting out of this either way since he’s on a timer anyhow, doesn’t mean he should be doing reckless, nonsensically stuff at all at any point. Also, I believe it is universal that all genies cannot revive the dead at the very minimum, it is the that the number of wishes one can make is what is infinite in the original Aladdin and The Magic Lamp, it is not infinite power but infinite applications of a finite power one might say. Anyway, y’know, it’s nice to see that you’ve finally found a collaborative partner, I hope there may be good things in store for the future, and I’ll be here in the background, sharpening away at you and everyone else until you become diamonds instead haha. Wow long comment. First of all, you’re thinking way too deeply about the typos. I can understand if it’s in the credits, but there was only one typo in this entire game. ONE. That’s hardly worth calling out. Second, Sonic did have to get the bomb away from him when he made it out, and while kicking it might have been a little reckless, it’s within Sonic’s character to do so. Third, if being unable to revive the dead is a universal rule of genies, why is it that Erazor was able to do so? Even when looking at Disney’s Aladdin, the genie himself stated that he has “phenomenal cosmic powers” and yet can’t kill or resurrect anyone. I don’t know what you would define as phenomenal cosmic powers, but I would think that death and resurrection would be part of that. My views on the limits of genies is that while they don’t have infinite power, they still have enormous amounts of power. Disney likely threw those can’t kill or resurrect rules in there to simply make the adaptation more “kid-friendly”, especially since the original Aladdin story is quite gruesome.

Honestly, secret rings was ok, but the controls... Bleh. Honestly, sonic and the black knight had much better controls (and more playable characters later on in the story and in duel mode.). To be fair, the party games really were ok, but yeah... they really were a little unnecessary. I honestly think sonic and the black knight was the better one of the sonic storybook games. Both have pretty decent stories, but one has better controls than the other.

However, he also admitted that this was merely his personal opinion, and that "the canon was and is somewhat in flux all the time". Aaron Webber, SEGA of America's social media coordinator, would state in 2017 that "everything is canon", and since then the only game that has been identified as an exception to this is Sonic Chronicles, so... Also, one of the games Eva believed _was_ canonical is Sonic Battle, so Sonic has a house either way. As for you finding that "weird", that's a personal issue you'll have to deal with. I think it's weird when I see Sonic driving a car, but it doesn't seem like that's going away any time soon.

Charrii5's got a point on what you dinged as sin 13... Shahryar is a 'main presence', but the game got the story bit wrong by naming him the "main character" of the 1001 arabian nights. Scheherazade is actually the main character of the story in the source material because she's the one collecting and retelling the stories every night to Shahryar so he wouldn't have her killed in the following morning. Shahryar was actually a bit of a jerk. So you saying Shahryar is a main presence in your sin 13 and dinging that as a sin is a little disingenuous and misleading because until the end of the story, he was as much of a 'main presence' so much as the Grim Reaper is in most stories. And the omission of Scheherazade, not even being mentioned by Eggman!Shahryar is a major plothole; thus a sin.

WHY IS THERE A CHARGE-UP FOR A F***ING JUMP, and atleast 06 is so bad its fun BUT THIS GAME IS SO BAD ITS INFURIATING, oh yeah THIS GAME IS AN AUTORUNNER SO F*** ANY MOMENTUM BASED GAMEPLAY, and WHO THE HELL MADE MOVING BACKWARDS AWFUL THE CAMERA DOESNT FOLLOW, YOU MOVE INSANELY SLOW ITS AWFUL, grinding controls, ALSO THE SPEED UP BUTTON ON RAILS IS THE SAME AS THE JUMP BUTTON, to jump hold for a few seconds, whenever you homing attack an enemy the camera literally has a seizure, sliding is the same button to jump, THAT AWFUL DINOSAUR MISSION, and this is controversial but PARTY MODE IS BORING. 3.3/10 and im not even gonna give a sentence this game is so bad. For example, for the first "sin" of Charri, the game does not have to explain that this is Sonic house, because the rest of the game takes place in the book, and you Tony, pretty much explained why we don't see Sonic's house so often, and it's pretty obvious that we are in Sonic's house. That is probably why we see a fireplace and the other stuff, so we know. Sorry if this was a bit long, but I really needed to get that out of my chest. I have never played the game, but it looks alright, it's nowhere as bad as 06, and the other dark age games.

First of all, the manual for Secret Rings states that Sonic can react to things by the millisecond. Plus, the monster didn’t even get out of its hole by the time the boss fight starts. Second, it was more of a slap on the wrist since Sonic is perfectly fine in the next panel. The Sonic Wiki even states that it’s a mild pain.
