Dispelling the Controller Keybind Myth in WoW

I think its less about having the available buttons and more about ease of use. Also some of those buttons are still going to be taken up by non-combat things, IE jumping, object interaction, menus, targeting. Even assuming most of the menu control are deligated to some kinda wheel you need a button to access that wheel. Also on the issue of targeting, with a keyboard there is the option to tab thru targets and also shift tab to back thru targets, im assuming you would be using some kinda "smart targeting" with the controller so your ability to targets is less percise, especially at range. Also, what about abilities that target allies? either you are going to have to deligate a number of buttons to each party member for targeting or have some other way to cycle thru them. Overall the controller, while it can be nice for solo play or lite group play, NO ONE would be using this for high level play. The lack of control and need for complex modifier button combos would make it too unwieldy.

Ive been playing on controller and honestly its been amazing. I still use my mouse for navigating menus, doing my crafting etc but my spells, targeting and interaction are all controller and ever since my combat has dramatically increased due to the fact that i crushed half my left hand a while ago so even though i had an mmo mouse i just physically couldn't use modifiers and movement on the keyboard effectively to the point that i was almost just playing one handed most of the time

​@@m.l.2871 assuming you're using the consoleport addon, I turn on the soft targeting feature to target whatever I'm looking at but I also have my left and right dpad to function as tab targeting. As for interact I have down dpad bound and up is my main ring menu

​@@m.l.2871i also prefer to have my modifiers as Lt and lb instead of Lt and rt because using Lt as a mod plus lb as an ability just feels really awkward when there's a lot going on

I play a WW Monk and Fury Warrior on controller. My brother is playing a Unholy DK, Ret Pally, Balance Druid and Arcane Mage on controller.

Great stuff, I play in my handheld PC Asus rog Ally off Hotspot out and about it's awesome. Phone in pocket with hotpot on and handheld pc just chillin on the bus questing.

I got bored in season 3 and pugged to Keystone Hero on a Survival Hunter, and Havoc DH, with a controller. I actually prefer playing with a controller now lol I used to clown on it, but once you get used to it its ultra comfy.

what addon do you use for controller use? Last time I tried this I got insta DC’d every time I used the left and right sticks at the same time because it sent too many inputs to the server and makes it seem like you’re cheating.

I use ConsolePort. Assuming that was the addon that was throwing the error, you can you go to the ConsolePort Discord & there are a lot people who might be able to help you with that issue. In addition to the mods hanging around in the General channel, there is also a FAQ and Support channel there as well. Hope that helps solve your problem. :)

Yep, but you can use PS if you prefer that. ConsolePort will work with both.

I been playing wow with a controller exclusively for the past few months (only really use my mouse and keyboard for very specific things like opening my bag or something) and yeah sure KB&M are certainly more optimal cause thats what wow was designed for my muscle memory is just ingrained in controllers been a console gamer for 2 decades and only been in the pc market for about 5 years i tried using KB&M to play wow but i just can't im not dexterous enough to be pushing keybinds that require me to hold ctrl+shift+F5 or something like that i get its baffling to most people to play wow with a controller but some of us dont have years upon years of keyboard experience or we don't have the ability to perform well using one (whether its through age or a physical/mental condition) i healed dps and tanked on a controller it definitely can work some of my guild mates were baffled i use a controller and some just couldn't wrap their head around it even tho i tried to explain why

This is absolutely a common thread. Don't know why people make such a big issue out of it.

This video just shows how far you have to go with a controller to get even close to the functionality of mouse and keyboard. With more modifier keys on a keyboard you could get many hundreds if not thousands of keybinds. The number of binds you can cook up doesn't have any effect on how easy those binds are to use. Trying to say a controller could be better than a keyboard + mouse for any situation in wow is just wrong. The only valid argument is that you can be more comfortable while you do low key easy content or fishing or something. If you want to actually perform well in difficult content, a controller will never have any advantage.

Yeah, but I can play this on the go, on the bus every morning with my Asus Rog Ally handheld pc. I also have a special needs child and it's difficult for me to commit to the gaming room. It's also very difficult to commit to a laptop in my lap on the couch too, it's cumbersome even a 13knch with a mouse. I just cannot state how effective using the rog Ally plus controller set up for wow is so fun and easy for people who have busy family life styles. I feel no difference between when I commit to the gaming room, or my kids crawling on my playing on the couch in my rog Ally controller handheld.

Well I wouldn’t say that controller or handheld is far superior to a keyboard or a mouse nor would I say the other way around, of course there is some ups and downs about using a controller like your keybinds are more organised in and around your hand and downsides like targeting the correct target/healing but once you get comfortable using, it becomes more of a muscle memory same like a keyboard and a mouse. Mind you saying “you can’t perform in a difficult content” a huge player base in wow are casuals and a lot of them clicks their spells or partly click+hotkeys. Also I’m not here saying that you can’t perform in difficult content but for someone casual like me I’ve been able to get all aotc and 2.5k rating on all seasons(except for the one I couldn’t play due to work) all done on my rog ally. So don’t go about saying you can’t perform on difficult contents, it’s possible may not be as efficient as a keyboard and a mouse but it’s not impossible. Let’s hear how many keybinds do you effectively use I bet those 100s of binds coming in handy when most spells in wow basically rotate around 10 rest are just cds you press occasionally and that’s what 99% of wow player base does and need.
