the tradesman earring has its origines in the early guild systems and the fakt that i used to be requierd for a tradesman to complete his journey... in case some thing unfortunate hapend and a journeyman died, his earring payd for a proper funeral and at the same time was not likely to be wasted for buze in the next in while still alive, also when someone misbehaved and thus was a pain in the neck of his fellow journeyman the would rip out his earring thismmaking him easy recognisable by anybody as being not thrust worthy, this also leads to the german word schlitzohr (litteraly slitted ear) for someone of dubios habits

+Zeugschmiede/Toolforge My granddad told me the same about the background - he had been a carpenter and when they completed their apprenticeship they basically got the earring and were sent on their way to find work and learn more along their way, giving their home town a wide berth until they had completed their journey. That old tradition is still alive in some trades and you'll see those tradesmen every now and then, in their traditional clothing with their traditional pack on their journey, usually looking for a lift to the next town.

Oh my goodness, what an unexpected memory! I worked for several years at Spencer's Gifts. One of my jobs was ear piercing. I used one of those guns with sealed cartridges containing the earring. It was amazing how many people had a few drinks first to get their courage up, it was hilarious really. The worst was a lady who got really snockered and still kept chickening out. She ended up with only one ear pierced. We couldn't stop laughing after she left.

the trade earring is still being done by some of the more traditional trades. originally the ring was supposed to pay for your funeral if you died while moving from town to town. seamen also had them with their name on it for when their body washed up on the beach. getting kicked out of the trade would involve a strong pull on the ring

I love the eclectic nature of your channel. Is there nothing you don't cover ? If yes then doctor I'm having trouble with my close coupled toilet. I read that modern low level toilets use much less water than the old high tank gravity thunder blasters. Without going into detail my present toilet fails to deal with some of the material I donate to it even when I give it the full flush treatment. I also read that some toilets are "pressure assisted". I wondered if you had had any personal experience of this problem and had found a solution ?

+meandmymouth Yes. What you need is a device called a "jobby-stick" to break up large turds into more manageable pieces. The pressure toilets are used in places like Las Vegas to conserve water. The cistern is empty except for a pressure vessel that is pressurised by the incoming water supply. When you flush it makes a loud bang and forces water horizontally to ram your turd round the bend. They're just completely frightening things.

The needle is sharp enough to do the job and probably better than some piercist needles. I would always prefer a good piercist, but it's better than getting a good infection from the guy around the corner, with his ebay bought piercing kit.

The word is Piercer, not piercist. These days, there is a reputable piercer in every town. Stainless steel should NEVER be used in fresh piercings. 316L is acceptable in fully healed piercings (stable and settled fistula) but considering how affordable titanium jewellery is these days, it is still a false economy particularly if you have any sensitivities or allergies. "The needle is sharp enough to do the job and probably better than some piercist needles. [sic]" No, it is not.Firstly, this device does not use a needle; it uses the (blunt) jewellery itself to force through the tissue. Piercing needles are about as sharp as you can get, and the vast majority of piercers these days will use a triple bevel hollow needle blade or quality cannula. Even 'poor' piercing needles are like a razor compared to this thing. Look at it this way - a butter knife is sharp enough to 'do the job' but surgeons still use scalpels. A word about sterilisation: If you do not know how to create, maintain and use a sterile field then popping this thing out onto the table before picking it up (as 99% of its users would do) renders any purported sterility completely pointless.

pwnski First piercist is as legit as piercer and in US piercist is more common afaik. Second, SSS surgical stainless steel is cheaper than G23 Ti (the titanium you are referring to) and is disinfecting, you could go for 999 Nb, it's a bit cheaper than G23 Ti and still suits the job. Third, you should look the item up again, it isn't "blunt", yes there are sharper needles out there, but they couldn't use a more sharp needle, since it would be to long to suit the usage. You only have a fixed length to work in. Fourth, the item itself is clean. IF the user is mistreating it, it is the users fault, not the sellers / objects. The object itself is build in a ISO 8 clean room, you can't go more sterile than that. Have a nice day

I have used these. If it doesnt go through fully, they dont push hard enough and if you dont push it hard enough it just ends up being painful. I find the pain only lasts for as you push then its immediate relief. All my piercings have healed nicely from these.

I had a nose stud "installed" some 23 years ago. I thought it would be as painless as having it done on an earlobe, remembering my sister had earrings done when she was a kid without incident. ....... It bloody well wasn't. I remember the shocking pain and being in some sort of stupor as I came to my senses. Everything healed eventually and I've had it ever since. I don't have an earring.

I have 1 in my left ear since I was 15 until a few years ago at work a large spot of molten metal flew up and welded itself to the ring, it was a case hold your breath and wait for it to cool down, trouble is being gold it transfers heat very well and proceeded to cook my piercing hole from the inside out, eventually it did cool down but hurt like hell and eventually got infected, 2 weeks later I had to re pierce the hole which had healed over, not a nice feeling going through the new scar tissue back into the old location but Argh a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Still have my old earring that my Mum gave to me as a 15 year old with nice little ball welded to the side of it stashed away.

It does stuck indeed, just verified on both my ears. And it always will, because when you try to pull it off you twisting the stud and butterfly at an angle because diamond side fixed no more. Just use a small pin as a lever.

I'd be most worried about the metallurgy of a cheap Chinese stud -- friends who are piercers have a 'big book of you fucked up' where people used cheap jewelry 'properly' and have terrible reactions to "proper" but cheap metals. I've just recently pierced both my ears with that, first push didn't go all the way through cause i didn't push hard enough second one went more smooth. My advice: take rubbing alcohol(this is what i did)disinfect the whole thing and your ears. It works but it's risky. Letting someone more experienced do it is the safest option and if you wanna do cartilage piercing then i Higley recommend you to let a professional do it since its thicker and can be more severe then your earlobe if something were to go wrong.

Never tried these but I do have piercings, five in each ear, studs exactly like these. I had mine done at a hair salon. They used a spring operated gun, it took months to heal because piercing guns like these click types use blunt trauma, a needle piercing heals quickly. I would never use these things from eBay. I would think spring operated guns hurt less than these things. That's my experience of piercings of the ear.

I had a silver earring ( ear pierced at age 7) and tore the hole by getting caught on a scaffold wedge. it festered a lot and now I have a 2,5 mm piercing in there, the type that closes with a ball. it was more a thing to have a silver or gold hammer or trowel on a chain, paid for on your first salary. I bought a 3/4 length army coat and a frame supported backpack :) still in service today. ( warm in my land rover)

All piercers swear on hypodermic needles instead of something like a blunt nail. These days they are so perfectly sharp, it's the the way to go. Bleeding can still occur and you can shine through the ear a bit with light before, bit it's still luck whether you hit some vein or not. Some even have a sticker on the doors saying "professionals don't use ear piercing guns".

Back in the late 70's I used a similar system to pierce my ear, the difference was that the stud had a grove in it and a plastic tab in the piecer held the stud in place till you pressed with enough pressure for the tab to snap and the stud would then shoot through the ear. My father had been a GP and he was sent a sample pack of disposable piercers that I helped myself to, at the same time most my friends that did their own piercing where using the needle and cork method.

Usually im afraid of needles but one day I decided to pierce my ear by my self. I got a sterile needle (had these for modeling stuff (glue, color etc.)), cleaned my ear and got a potato. It was not really painful but the sound is irretating. I had no earring and I used the needle and the rubber from a pencil. The next days, I sometimes pulled out the "earring" and I punched a bunch of holes, because I couldn't find the right hole. Had this for about 2 weeks but than after a night, I lost one rubber part and I removed it. Also it was the "gay" ear (the right one) and I thought buying a proper earring, would result that I needed to do another hole. It healed with no problem and I had no big irretations on my ear. It got a bit thicker but not that much, that I needed to worry. I think diy is not always a good solution. Going to a good piercer, might be better and worth the money. There are 2 ways to make holes. One is simply forcing a stick into the ear and the other is to removing some flesh. Removing the flesh with a hollow needle, results in a cleaner hole. When you even want to stretch you hole, the picker even can get a bigger needle, so that you can skip a bit. It's not much but saves you some money. The problem with diy, is that you might be a bit shaky. When a friend makes the hole for you, it might be better, when the friend is not that afraid that he can hurt you. Also using a old needle and heating it up, is by far the worst thing that you can make.

The trigger gun thingy is how they did it for me aswell, they gave me a choice in color ball before hand and it shot the thingy i wanted through my ear, didnt feel a thing. only heard a snap and it was in.

The gun type ear piercing guns are notorious for not being easily sterilized and in use they get covered in microscopic droplets of sprayed blood. So in untrained hands they present are real contamination risk. A one shot pre sterilized device makes a lot of sense, though probably not for DIY use. Always get piercings, even ears done at a proper piercing shop, with proper health and safety regimes.

Nice one! I'd looked at these when considering more earrings. I'd previously had a shop done earring and these use more or less the same system to make the fit. I did spot lots and lots of variations when looking at this type however and that was one reason why I was put off. The other reason is that this type of fitting will slightly scar the hole as it forces flesh apart when piercing. Far better to get a friend to use a (sterile) large-ish hypodermic syringe needle. They cut flesh very cleanly and cause little scarring - ideal if the wearer is wanting to go for large sized holes in their earlobe. Syringes do tend to make it bleed a little but to be honest it's barely anything. I've a request Clive - is there any chance you could review one of the cheap Chinese tattoo machines for us? They can be had for around £22 nowadays. The sets include everything from ink to mains plug-in units for power and the coil type tattoo guns. I've spotted open circuit foot pedals, dodgy power connectors, the lot. Cheers!!

I couldn't imagine using something like this on myself and I'm not even afraid of needles. Imagine someone with a fear of needles trying to use this on themselves. The last time I had my ears pierced was for a 2nd set of holes in my lobes and was probably 10 years ago but I think the entire price was less than $40 (circa '08-'09) which included a pair of gold-plated starter cubic zirconia studs. I don't know what something like that would cost now in the UK but I'd still consider it a worthwhile price vs the possible pain and/or mutilation you might cause to yourself using this. Not to mention having it done professionally you have a place to go or call should something amiss happen with your new piercings such as infection or piercings that won't stop bleeding. Both times I had my ears pierced (once when I was ~8 yrs old and the 2nd time ~10 years ago) were done professionally with a piercing gun and I never had any problems with either set of piercings. Of course, both times I religiously cleaned them and kept the starter set in for longer than the recommended time.

The first time I pierced my ear, it was with a hinged hoop with a needle-sharp point. Bit of TCP and a bit sore for a while. The second time was with an old silver hat pin, TCP - no problem. Then my mate wanted his done.. Boiled the hat pin, TCP..... The hole at the front was okay, but maybe his ear had collagen or something in the way - it just wouldn't go though, despite several attempts to get to the back of the lobe. Blood running down his neck. Last time I saw that bloke he still never had a pierced ear.

Probably sterilized with either gamma radiation or ethylene oxide gas. For something like that, I'd guess on gamma since that can penetrate an airtight package where EO cannot. Its a fairly common thing for single-use medical devices. I work for a company that offers both processes, the particular plant I work at uses gamma.

Can it also be used to install an RFID chip into your hand or do they have another dedicated throw-away tool for that? It needs some pain relieving chillin' or at least an electric nerve confuser. An antibiotic and some povidone-iodine site prep would complete a DIY RFID kit. Oh, almost forgot to mention something, circumcision.

+FindLiberty I would guess that you do get RFID injectors for vets. Not sure it's a great idea though.

+bigclivedotcom Great video Clive and with all this talk of RFID chips and home piercing kits i was wondering if you had seen the video of the guy who gold plated and implanted a magnet into his finger? He was able to use it to detect magnetic fields and current running through wires etc. It did break and he removed most of it.....I always wonder why people don't just go to a professional.

+jusb1066 Prince Alberts seem like a bad idea. I've actually pierced the frenulum of my penis myself with a sewing needle and thread though! It's a procedure you can do if your frenulum is too short to correct it.

I pierced my ear with a sewing needle. I heated it, red hot, with a Bic lighter. Than pushed it through. That's how a real man does it. Screw the pain. Than I replaced the needle with a finish nail. Ooraa.

Ive accidentally clicked the piercer cuz i thought it didnt work but i didnt press hard enough the first time now im left with the earring not inside my ear and no hole for it either. Can i still yank it through my ear manually

I would be terrified to get an earring. I have however had jaggers from 5/8" swaged cable go deep into my hands. Deep enough to scrape the bone. I've seen the wire poking the skin on the back of my hand upwards from the palm. all the way through the hand.. Diesel fuel numbs good. Logging.....
