I have a disease that leaves me bedridden and moving the wrong way/remaining in the wrong position can cause excruciating pain for weeks, and I am chronically, 100%, all of the time, unable to sleep at all without extremely potent black market tranquilizers. I too am simply a watcher of history, with no agency in it, knowing I cannot participate in it, nor will I have any discernable impact on the future. In essence, in the "If a tree falls in the woods..." sense, I barely exist. I know it isn't 1 for 1 the same, but even just having my agency limited as it is, unable to work, dream, or function as a normal person... is horrible and fucking depressing. Especially since I had one of the worst spans of adolescence anyone living in the US today could have. I'm talking torture-r*pe bad, not even old enough to vote, nobody caring, no support system, surviving psychologically only on the fantasy of killing the one doing that to me, or of him killing me and ending that existence. ... It sucks. But this, Menengitis Lethargica, must be so much worse. Hearing about this actually makes me look at my situation and go "Yeah, I don't have it so bad".

My wife suffers from catatonic depression that has eerily similar symptoms to this. When she goes catatonic, she is completely aware, but unable to do anything at all. Her body locks up and goes rigid Right now, medication can bring her out of it, but we are both scared about a day when she doesn't come back out of it. I can only imagine how terrible it was to be sent to a facility and left alone for years and years back when this disease was occurring.

I experience a lot of sleep paralysis (usually theres no halucinations though) if anybody needs advice yes, definetly try from the tips of your fingers. Its not an always fix but work from your finger tips to your arm. Try your best to move something and control your breathing. Its hard to stay calm but I myself usually try to stay calm. Tho sometimes I have it while I'm in a position where I cant breathe that well, and thats a time where you should get up as soon as possible. Though if youre laying on your back, staying calm and doing your best to move is more ideal in my experience. Hope this helps :"D
@JoshKillcrop2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when I get sleep paralysis I found that to be the best way to deal with it. If you fight it, it just last longer, and you panic, but can't take deep panic breaths (since the paralysis has you stuck on the standard slow breathing of sleep). If you just sort of submit and will yourself to relax, your body snaps out of it. God damn the first time it happened I thought I was having a seizure or something.

My mother passed away from (most likely) encephalitis a few years ago.Once I realized the condition the video was talking about was encephalitis...I had to stop watching because it became too painful to relive the weeks of being next to her hospital bed: slowly watching her become more pallid and emaciated as her life slowly fizzled away. It was so sudden, that we went from being hopeful that it was just the flu and expecting her to make a recovery to watching her casket being swallowed by the earth in the span of a few short months. Provided they're not terrible people, please don't take your parents for granted- you may not realize how important they are until it is too late.

@ok-jq1jh2 жыл бұрын
Never being able to wake up for sure would be more terrifying, IF you're even somewhat conscious. The human subconscious can easily become a hell and it feels like eternity when you're stuck in it. The moment you feel fear, or even think you might, the subconscious will manifest it. If you remember any nightmares: the monster shows up when you start feeling afraid. Or just assume it's going to. But the mind does adapt even in the subconscious. I got so sick of the shear terror that when the monster, whatever it may manifest as, shows up I get angry at the discomfort. Straight up had enough, that's the emotion that starts giving me control. Still our primal subconscious will try fear inevitably at some point, and no amount of lucid skills someone has will change those attempts.

I was in a coma for 6 months, when I was just 13 years old I was nearly killed by a dog attack. I lost so much blood and my abdomen was ripped open so bad that I got sepsis any my wounds on my arms and legs were so bad that I had to be revived at the hospital and I was placed in a medical induced coma. When I woke up I had absolutely no clue that so much time had passed and I literally thought I had just got to the hospital, when I looked at my arms and legs they were noticeably more skinny and very pale and even still it took many people to finally convince me that I had actually been in a coma and 6 months had passed since my injury. Even after all that time in the coma I woke up and still had open wounds on my arms and body that were gruesome to have to see every day. It is something I have always been interested in, as well as related Parkinsonian disorders, and was actually one of the things that made me want to go into the field of neurology. I'd recommend the book to anybody who saw this video and wanted to know more about the patients themselves who had suffered from the disorder, it's pretty easy for the average person to read and has a lot of footnotes to add additional context.

I've been there before. I used to have extremely lucid/intense nightmares where I would actually convince myself the pain I felt in my sleep was real. I would wake up crying and when it was time for me to lay down I would stay on my phone or watch tv until I couldn't physically manage to keep myself awake any more.

Nightmares causing panic attacks you wake up to is traumatising enough, or maybe I just have it easy. -_- Nightmares by themselves are bad enough.
@MichelleHell2 жыл бұрын
I sleep with my door closed, sometimes locked. I get sleep paralysis when it's opened a crack because shadowy objects are always lurking there before they pounce on me. I've had sleep paralysis enough times that I am afraid to sleep under certain conditions where I'm potentially vulnerable. If I don't feel safe enough to fall asleep I just won't fall asleep that night. I've noticed that if I'm in a state where I'm dozing off but trying to keep myself awake it can cause sleep paralysis. This would be like in the evening after work and school. Can't even get a nap. Also I notice I get sleep paralysis if circulation is cut off to one of my limbs such that it goes numb. Maybe the psychology of being physically paralyzed seeps into the dream world, induces a panic and causes the dream to turn dark. A part of my unconscious is trying to turn myself over in my sleep, but can't do it and panics to snap me out of it. Usually they end with me realizing I'm dreaming and screaming in my dream to wake up, and then I wake up in a jolt feeling like I fell out of the sky onto my bed. The really convincing one's will have me wake up yelling at whoever is at my door. Sometimes I think I'm having a sleep paralysis but I'm actually still awake and will yell at the door, get up and turn the lights on. I blame my family for scaring me when I was a child in my sleep by sneaking into my room and pouncing on me. I was under ten and had associated unlocked room doors with the potential to be scared. They have to be locked because in my dreams they can open the doors, but if I know it's locked I know they can't get in and I sleep fine.

It makes sense the l-dopa proved to be a solution. Often, an early warning sign of Parkinson’s or dementia is shaking during sleep. It seems that if there is something disrupting sleep quality or ones ability to induce self-paralysis during sleep, then this has directly to do with dopamine. Dopamine is the primary neurotransmitter thats effected by Parkinson’s. It’s also the primary chemical impacted by l-dopa.

I've only had sleep paralysis happen to me twice, lasting about 10 seconds each. The first was due to me thinking it was my sister's hand slowly creeping up my arm, which she wasn't. (It was a dark shadowy figure instead, most likely my sleep paralysis demon) However, the thought of her doing so made me want to snatch my arm away, which instead only made my finger twitch slightly, breaking the sleep paralysis. (I was quite shaken after the experience). The second exprience was me becoming self aware at the fact that it was sleep paralysis and I closed my eyes trying my hardest to move any part of my body, which my toes twitched and broke the sleep paralysis. I was not going to have a sleep paralysis demon get me again lmao. But I can definitely say my experiences are extremely lucky compared to others, thankfully they only last 10 seconds for me.
