As time goes on and we get more nostalgic for the things we had, 90s/2000s manual cars will become the most sought after variant. So im all for swapping paddle shifters out and making the car more 'personal' to drive. So many cars from the 60s to 80s had those awfully slow 3 or 4 speed automatics, so the realm of possible manual conversions is quite large. I imagine a 300 SEL 6.3 with manual swap will release a lot of driving pleasure, a Ferrari manual swap will be even more epic.
@Talynen Жыл бұрын
I also think it's important to encourage these kinds of builds because there were so many amazing cars from this time period that weren't offered with manual gearboxes (E46 CSL) and are improved so much from a driving experience standpoint to have them. I don't have any clue how feasible it is, but I'd love to see someone figure out how to swap a manual into a Lexus LFA. Based on people's feedback from driving manual F430s (and how "responsive" the engine is in a way that they didn't really experience by using the F1 box), it feels like a manual LFA would be a life-changing experience.
@mickwrinkles2318 Жыл бұрын
@@Talynen Good idea with the LFA, one can only imagine how orgasmic it's superfast reving V10 can feel with a shifter like the Porsche Carrera GT had. The single clutch shift mechanism of the LFA might be a big hurdle.
@Roddy_Zeh Жыл бұрын
@@mickwrinkles2318 @Talynen It certainly helps when an existing car already had a manual version, be it using the same engine or even a less powerful one. I think the LFA could be a bit more difficult because of the electronics, but above all else, the fact there are no similar cars made by Toyota/Lexus from which they could adapt the transmission. From what I was researching about it, it's an automated manual transaxle, albeit a sequential system. In theory, perhaps you could somehow convert it to fully manual operation, though that would require adapting a new pedal box for the clutch pedal along with the rest of the necessary systems. I don't know if the sequential system would remain in first place, but having the ability to manually shift would already be great.

The video i didnt know i needed, ...but omg yes, please give us more of this stuff. Well made, yeah a little dark in some shots, but that made me sit forward and pay attention more, rewatched a couple of times already even lol, it felt very much a natural flow though, really awesome vid, loved every second, and im sure, will likely watch a few more times. Ferrari`s system is interesting AF, im a paddleshift guy, yes im guilty, but showing its still a manual underneath some systems, not torque convertor, awesome, and where the shifter SHOULD sit between gears in a manual, awesome, that all just touched my engineering G-spots and driving soul. Some paddleshift (perhaps many/most?) have flaws or drawbacks for some drivers, flaws that may not fit with what they want from the experience of driving, i totally get that, i was once there too, and with systems like this one that can destroy themself in a way that requires a mortgage to repair, this is an interesting and cool mod, how many owners ever drive them at race speeds and could benefit from paddleshift, even a dual clutch ?. We have cars that are SO fast now, even basic sedans are quick to 20 yrs ago (not to mention electric), but the roads havent kept up, nor the laws, so slowing down things, including the shifts, chills us out a bit more, making things a little more deliberate and back to basics to enjoy what driving is to us, ...more than just getting us to another location (thats the role of electric 😝). Many thanks all, Dan.

Loved the inside look into how the F1 'box actuates, explains how flawed it feels and how much of a flappy paddle head you'd have to have to order an F1 car when you had the manual option. I'm currently having the "shift to third" problem in my E36 with worn out bushings which is unacceptable to me there, let alone a 360! Driving the finished product would probably make the word special an understatement. Also, *IS THAT A 1/350 COMPETITION YELLOW MICA FD??????* Wonderful

The issue with manual swaps is the flywheel. The F1 transmission is mated to a flyweight flywheel. The comparatively slower shifting manual requires a heavier flywheel so revs don’t plummet uncomfortably between shifts. They try to compensate with a rev pause feature via the engine’s ECU. But it’s not the same as if the drivetrain was designed for a manual from the start. Ferrari are idiots for abandoning manuals.

It's a weird period in time when these single-clutch automated manuals were all the hype. Now almost every car that had these would be better with a different gearbox. And it's not only the shift action alone: we have an Opel with Easytronic and compared to a VW DSG the clutch operation is much worse. It can stall during parking, sometimes it engages abruptly, sometimes it slips... just pretty inconsistent at low speeds. Once you are at normal speed (nothing sporty, it's just an economy car) it gets better, but I still prefer modern torque converter automatics.

I had the MT Version of an Aston Martin Vantage. It's paddle-shift version was also a MT with a clutch and hydraulic actuator system. It eats clutches, so I stayed away from those cars. It's the reason I don't own a 360 now (no, I can't afford a MT version lol). Does the 430 have a better transmission?
@hypocycloidiaspora Жыл бұрын
It is great to see the manual transmissions being retrofitted, if that's even the right word, into cars that never had them. There are so many good ones that have already begun, like E46 M3 CSL manual conversions; I look forward to seeing more manual upgrades in the future, to cars like the LFA. As valuable as these rare cars are with their flappy paddles, they will increase in value if the manual swap is executed to an OEM standard.
@SmallBlogV8 Жыл бұрын
I don't think making a limited-run car less original makes its value go up, even if the driving experience is better because of it. That doesn't seem to be the way most collectors think.

How much was the total cost? There are a group of shops out there who all charge $35,000 to convert a Ferrari to manual transmission, which you a huge scam. You would have to be a complete idiot to spend $35,000 per set of pedals and a shifter. I know someone who converted his 355 Ferrari to manual transmission for under $4000 and he did it over the weekend. Why are all these shops consistently charging the same price of $35,000 and not $30,000 or $25,000. Sounds very fishy to me.

I had my F430 converted to manual, but the Challenge Stradale is a collector level car and its market value is so high, I would never change it from an OEM. It destroys all that value in the market.

I'd reckon ole sir that its likely more important just what parts were used for the conversion. I dont see the price destroying the value of the market as long as its OEM Ferrari F1 gear box -> Ferrari gated 6 speed. Plus retain the OEM gearbox for the next owner if ever selling. You have an ultimate car at that point so I'd advise not to sell, so essentially the 360 Stradale 6-speeds are reducing the ones on the market, increasing value!
@sarahdell4042 Жыл бұрын
More than likely it will increase value. But who cares, it’s meant to be enjoyed not view it as an appreciating asset
