Yes, adding H2O2 to the mix very much accelerates the reaction. Back in the 70s, when I was working a precious metals recovery lab, I was in charge of the first stage of recovery, which included crushing the incoming material, stripping the gold and whatever else was going to get dissolved with the cyanide and preparing the solvate for the chemist to purify. We typically performed batches of 30-50 pounds of scrap. The solution was started with about 10 gallons of 130F DI water, 2-3 pounds of cyanide (sodium) and then to start the reaction, 100ml of 30% hydrogen peroxide. It was important to have a ventilation system for this and for extra protection we covered the bath because of the violent reaction of the H2O2 and the dissolved NaCN. We would have totally stripped parts in under 1 hour. As for the cyanide, we used a type that was briquetted. There was almost no dust when dispensing the cyanide for the job as a powdered cyanide would generate. I practiced *extreme* safety then and probably by 2019 standards it would be considered not good practice. Everyday one of my duties was to wash down the entire lab area I worked in. Wash all benches, glassware, fume hood and mop the entire floor. The entire laboratory was under negative air pressure (below atmospheric). The doors were difficult to open from the outside! I appreciate the small scale demonstration here. It brings back memories of one of the best jobs I had. We were capable of handling 500+ pounds/day of scrap (not gold!) for whatever recovery the chemists had predicted. I'm not a chemist but I learned a lot of gold/silver/platinum chemistry from that job.

Off Topic: Some years back I worked in a factory & our building had a designated cleaner responsible for everything, including making sure there was boiling water & milk available for us to drink - with our tea/coffee. At that stage in my life I drank neither tea, nor coffee. However, one day people in our building were complaining that their tea/coffee seemed very "gritty"... Questioning the cleaner, he said that the urn had calcified somewhat with the build up of tap water over the years, so they took it upon themselves to take the urn to the heat treatment shop & use the Sand Blaster to get rid of the calcium build up... Fortunately for everyone in the shop, they were ALL very lucky that no-one got sick (or worse), as the heat treatment shop used ALL types of Salt Baths, including Sodium Cyanide salts, for a controlled heat treatment process... That day could have ended very badly... :/

That’s a very slow reaction. I used to work in electroplating and when we chemically removed gold layers they dissolved much faster. The stripping solution contained mostly sodium cyanide. I’ve always wanted to know what exactly the other ingredient was but that is kept secretly by the manufacturer.

Hey NurdRage, from what I understand you needed oxygen to promote the reaction but didn't want to use hydrogen peroxide? If this is true, you might have thought about getting one of those fish aquarium "bubblers" (the kind with a stone at the end to make it fizzy) and drop it into the solution while it was mixing.

I just started using cyanide. 5-6 grams per liter of water, Ph 11, temp 60-70 F, mix and air 4 days. Does warm or hot work better and shorter time? Zinc powder, then filter, rinse good with hot water, then into hot HCl, filter rine hot water, then nitric/water hot, filter rinse then into AR.

You're not going to be able to do this nicely but if I may make a suggestion, I would try to iobtain the oxides of the copper and zinc (you should be able to find a method for this somewhere) and then mix them together with aluminium powder to make a thermite. I'd try igniting such a mixture on a very small scale whatever you do because ordinary copper thermite is mildly explosive at larger scales.

+Ladik007 Square brackets tell you that gold atom forms the complex Au(CN)−2 ion, this means that CN- ions (ligands) are bonded to gold ion (central metal ion) with co-ordinate (dative covalent) bonds. A coordinate bond is a covalent bond (a shared pair of electrons) in which both electrons come from the same atom. Here is one example: www.chemguide.co.uk/atoms/bonding/nh4cldiag.gif .Complex ions have central metal ion, which is surrounded by ligands (e.g. H20, NH3, C6H6, CL-, OH-, CN-,...). One example is Prussian blue which I think has formula 4[Fe(CN) 6]3 www.chemspider.com/blog/Images/prussian_blue_emolecules.png I hope i helped. Btw. sorry for my bad english.

+Jernej Jurko Another way to say that is [Au(CN)2]2- is its own thing, and just like any other polyatomic ion needs its own brackets/parentheses.

Dear Nurdrage, I was doing your penny to 'gold' experiment and I made my own ZnCl. In I put the penny in the ZnCl and heated it up. I heard hissing and was wondering is that Cl gas and am I going to die? If not what was it? I commented here because that was a rather old video. -Sam Fultz (Fake name for those weirdos out there wondering) ;)
