Yes, adding H2O2 to the mix very much accelerates the reaction. Back in the 70s, when I was working a precious metals recovery lab, I was in charge of the first stage of recovery, which included crushing the incoming material, stripping the gold and whatever else was going to get dissolved with the cyanide and preparing the solvate for the chemist to purify. We typically performed batches of 30-50 pounds of scrap. The solution was started with about 10 gallons of 130F DI water, 2-3 pounds of cyanide (sodium) and then to start the reaction, 100ml of 30% hydrogen peroxide. It was important to have a ventilation system for this and for extra protection we covered the bath because of the violent reaction of the H2O2 and the dissolved NaCN. We would have totally stripped parts in under 1 hour. As for the cyanide, we used a type that was briquetted. There was almost no dust when dispensing the cyanide for the job as a powdered cyanide would generate. I practiced *extreme* safety then and probably by 2019 standards it would be considered not good practice. Everyday one of my duties was to wash down the entire lab area I worked in. Wash all benches, glassware, fume hood and mop the entire floor. The entire laboratory was under negative air pressure (below atmospheric). The doors were difficult to open from the outside! I appreciate the small scale demonstration here. It brings back memories of one of the best jobs I had. We were capable of handling 500+ pounds/day of scrap (not gold!) for whatever recovery the chemists had predicted. I'm not a chemist but I learned a lot of gold/silver/platinum chemistry from that job.

Off Topic: Some years back I worked in a factory & our building had a designated cleaner responsible for everything, including making sure there was boiling water & milk available for us to drink - with our tea/coffee. At that stage in my life I drank neither tea, nor coffee. However, one day people in our building were complaining that their tea/coffee seemed very "gritty"... Questioning the cleaner, he said that the urn had calcified somewhat with the build up of tap water over the years, so they took it upon themselves to take the urn to the heat treatment shop & use the Sand Blaster to get rid of the calcium build up... Fortunately for everyone in the shop, they were ALL very lucky that no-one got sick (or worse), as the heat treatment shop used ALL types of Salt Baths, including Sodium Cyanide salts, for a controlled heat treatment process... That day could have ended very badly... :/

That’s a very slow reaction. I used to work in electroplating and when we chemically removed gold layers they dissolved much faster. The stripping solution contained mostly sodium cyanide. +Ladik007 Square brackets tell you that gold atom forms the complex Au(CN)−2 ion, this means that CN- ions (ligands) are bonded to gold ion (central metal ion) with co-ordinate (dative covalent) bonds. A coordinate bond is a covalent bond (a shared pair of electrons) in which both electrons come from the same atom. Here is one example: www.chemguide.co.uk/atoms/bonding/nh4cldiag.gif .Complex ions have central metal ion, which is surrounded by ligands (e.g. H20, NH3, C6H6, CL-, OH-, CN-,...).
