Styrofoam is made from the polymer polystyrene that has been whipped with air. Typically, the expanded polystyrene is 98% air. These tiny pockets of air are what makes it such a great insulator.
The downside to expanded polystyrene is that it is often not accepted in curbside recycling containers because of it's bulk. Remember, it's 98% air.
Expanded polystyrene is recyclable and is typically incinerated at high temperatures (1000 °C) where the byproducts are water, carbon dioxide, and possibly small amounts of residual halogen-compounds from flame-retardants.
