I've never heard anyone say that it's a waste of time to memorize the distance formula. But he's right!! All distance calculations I've ever done have been on graph paper; I can always make a right triangle!

It should be the square root of 16, you don't need the formula to figure this one out. You can see that since they have the same y value (-10) they will be on the same x axis, therefore the distance between them is simply the absolute value of the difference between the x values |-6 - (-2)| = 4
