This brought back some memories,the old sidewinders were a vessel that I would sail in any sea on the planet,in any weather that it could throw at me,they are fine vessels,I had complete faith in them & I have been in 98 foot waves,in the middle of winter,pitch black,at 60 degrees below freezing point. Returned to Grimsby in mid June,still with thick ice on mast & rigging. Those days will never return,sad,but overfished,often counted 150 trawlers in one area,each with 130 feet mouth to trawl.

The Aberdeen men also fished these distant waters in much smaller trawlers, along with Fleetwood and Granton. All forgotten now.

I was a young Irish deckhand fishing on these trawlers from Grimsby in the early 1970s and have never forgotten the sheer physical hard work involved. The distant water trawlers were easier than the middle water trawlers because you had 18 hours on six below on 21 day trips hauling every 3 hours. The middle water trawlers has no guaranteed watch below and one 14 day trip aboard Ross Tiger at Papa Bank with Skipper Billy Hodson we had a total of 14 hours sleep during 10 days fishing.

great film but very sad when you think of all the men lost out of hull and grimsby the complete loss of an industry and way of life and the goverment should be ashamed of how these men have been robbed ...and deadliest catch,trawlermen,etc have it easy compared to what these guys did!

In the winter months,I used to dread getting large tears in the trawl,used to get a lot of pain in the hands from extreme cold,from having to remove gloves. Used to wear double-skinned oilskins,with 'salt 'n pepper' jumper underneath,along with a tanned smock,the cold wind penetrates right through,like a knife through butter. If you took a 'leak' on deck,it froze into ice,before hitting the deck,we had 'pneumatic' tubing around the mast,when iced up,compressed air was pumped into them.to clear.

You knew when it was cold,when gutting,the fish guts didn't fall out,because they were were solid,like timber. The flaps around the cod end,were cow hides,to prevent chaffing & losing fish from breaching the net. The doors(boards)weighed the same as a car(1 ton),the trawl mouth was some 130 feet wide,multiply that by 150 trawlers in one area & you see why it became fished out.

They were fine looking ships for sure I remember seeing Arctic Corsair in Hull in the early 90s, I bet they were the finest place to be one day and the worst hell another day, never seems so bad when your ashore though

i spoke to men who when to bear island and they said it was hard work and would wish what they had to do on their worst enimey the man was 78 and was a trawler men from been 16 so hes had the good and the bad and the amount of men over board them days was high too

Was in both Cod wars and it was a bit scary sometimes one can assure you.

Was in the 70s Cod War, worked for BUT in Grimsby. Could see there was no future fishing so went in the RN. My Dad stuck it all his life from 12 yr old until the bitter end when they all went bust. Was nearly lost coming home from Iceland on my last trip. We where plagued with engine problems all trip, couldn't trim the tanks so had a 12 degree list to starboard and just 700 kit to show for it. Anyway we laid up in Iceland to shelter for a few days (dad was in on the St Giles also) Well, the weather dropped to a force 10-12 and our Skipper decided to make a run for home. My Dad and Tommy Sawyer told him he was insane and would go down, they tried to talk me into signing on the Giles and come home to Hull with them, but been a young kid I told them I would stay with my crew and ship. Well, we left Iceland limping home and the sea increased to a 12. Never forget it, we where just north of Faroe getting tossed around like a cork when a wave suddenly hit us abeam and we rolled over onto the starboard side. The ship lay there for a couple of minutes as we waited for her to turn turtle and go down. Then suddenly a freak wave smacked into us and she righted herself. Still with a list we made it to the Faroe Isle and then home to Grimsby eventually. Went to pick up my settlings the next day from the office and the cashier gave me a bill for £7.50! That was my last trip. Still gives me nightmares.

brave lad I am from Fleetwood the catching side almost gone but remember seeing the Boston Blenheim when she was almost new at the oil berth where my father worked and 45 years later I bought at model of her looking at it just takes me back just hope Brexit gives our fishermen a bit more hope used to be said every man at sea creates another 5or6 onshore

A levy should have been introduced,to finance restocking of the fishing grounds. Each cod roe,has the potential,to create hundreds of thousands of new cod. Were the trawlermen employed to run hatchery's,a beneficial cycle of sustained fishing could have been created,instead of the EU dictating policy. A levy was proposed in the early 1960's,but the Tories scuppered it in their usual short-sighted fashion of self-interest. The result,a decimated industry.

Can understand Iceland did what they did ,if they didt there would be no cod left today
