As a resident of the Buckeye State, the railroading here is incredible, with the 2 mainlines from Chicago to New York, you get some of the busiest mainlines in the country, it's truly incredible to see. If and when you eventually come back, Berea, OH and Sandusky, OH, they both see a large amount of traffic

Most of the towns across the water level route offer great railroading - 100+ trains a day. We have a place on Catawba and have a secret little place that my wife and I go with the pups, kids and grandkids and picnic and watch trains. My father was born in Ashtabula. My great grandfather helped to design and build wooden ships in the harbor when he arrived from Italy. Point Park overlooks the bascule bridge, harbor, and yards.

@@PrenticeBoy1688 grandpa was a prosecutor and judge there. He and grandma, who was a nurse, knew everyone. As a kid I got to go to different railroad locations. Rode on locals and was allowed to operate the engine- also got to ride in the cabooses, turn locos on the wye at the west ave yard. Watched trains fly by from the interlocking on the water level route or crawl by on the harbor lines -- shaking the windows and ground. Was permitted, with the signalman help, to set up the routes and signals with the big Armstrong levers. The harbor was always a hive of activity. Before the ships became so large and had thrusters, tugs would help turn them and assist them beneath the bascule and rail draw bridges to their berths. I sure miss the 'old days'!

Hi Danny, hope you make it back to Ohio again. The NS Moorman yard in Bellevue, Ohio is the second largest railyard in US (UP Bailey yard in North Platte, Nebraska is largest). Has a twin track hump with 84 track runout. This was the originally the Nickel Plate yard. Make sure you bring the drone, will need it to cover this yard. Maybe get a shot of the abandoned NKP roundhouse and turntable at west end of the yard. Thank you for visiting the Mad River & Nickel Plate museum, Bill Musser with take great care of you next time, just let us know your heading this way. (I'm a member of Bellevue museum).

@@distantsignal For some information. That local you saw at Marion on the C&O is L344. L344 comes out of Parsons (Columbus) and works customers all along the Columbus Sub to Fostoria and then runs back. In addition, if you plan to come for your next trip. Fostoria, Ohio has a Rail Festival every weekend near the end of September. LOTS of people show up there. I normally attend the show every year. In addition, Summerail is a great time to visit Marion, although I will stress this enough. Do not stay at Marion at night. From personal experience I have had things happen while staying there at night.

Ohio is nice for trains. I grew up in Dayton where there was a big auto industry when I grew up in the 70s. One of my houses was closer to the tracks (about a mile and up hill). In summers we kept the windows open and we heard trains constantly, possibly every 1 hour. Parts were going into the auto plants and finished cars out. The auto plants are basically gone from Dayton but there are parts manufacturers. Much less trains.

One of the very few things we miss about Ohio since moving to Florida is the trains. We used to do frequent rides on one that is a restored train and cars for special events and holidays. If you go back, about halfway between Dayton and Cincinnati is EnterTRAINment Junction. A local business owner was a member of the local model train society. When he was bought out he and the society got together after he bought a huge building and did a massive HO set. Cincinnati Ohio took their old train station and made it in to 3 museums. Then you also have the festivals in Caroline Park Dayton Ohio where you can ride real model steam trains and see a lot of various model trains from tiny to big enough to pull people on the small scale track there.

Yes, we certainly don't have the train traffic in Florida that they do in Ohio, especially since PSR. Not even close. But the trade-off, as I'm sure you've found, is the good weather and recreational factor. And you can't find an ice scraper in a single Florida store! Ha!

They are thermostat controlled, and run continuously once we get below freezing weather and precipitation. They don't melt after the fact, they prevent buildup from ever getting started. Just wanted to clarify that. Most power switches from Chicago to the east coast have some form of them.

The National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo is really cool. Like you, my son and I found it accidentally a few years back. It was during the winter and the lake was frozen. The Schoonmaker wasn't open - I think it was still undergoing work. But the ice around it was singing. It was strange to a southern guy like me and really fascinating. Danny, if you and your son ever get the chance, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico in Mobile, Alabama is also really cool. It's very much focused on intermodal shipping, and it's on an active waterway with a lot of traffic. We saw a huge freighter go by that was full of rail cars. IIRC, there are two of them that ferry rail cars between Mobile and a port in Mexico, so it was a rare catch of a mixture between maritime and rail traffic. As always, love the videos. Keep up the great work!

WOW! Danny you outdid yourself. The BNSF power you noticed had some background. CSX an NS will not accept transfer containers by truck in Chicago (only local origin). So BNSF combines international containers into trains destined for NS or CSX. These trains are made up at Logistics Park Chicago for containers from California ports and La Crosse, WI for containers from the Pacific Northwest. In the case of CSX, these trains go to North Baltimore. Once in the CSX system, the BNSF power can wonder all over on exchange. You probably know this, but VRF has cameras at Deshler and Fostoria. These is a great KZbin video on the diamond replacement at Deshler. Thanks again!

Thanks! Yes, we stayed at the Station Inn in Cresson, visited Juniata Shops and downtown Altoona and Horseshoe Curve and Gallitzin Tunnel. Pennsylvania is great for railfanning.

I lived in Defiance OH for a bunch of years and my apartment overlooked the CSX line to Chicago! Loved it! Been to all the places in the video. Lots of great places west of Toledo on the main to catch long, fast trains across the open flat farmland.

Everyone’s asking what’s going on in Ohio? The answer is TRAINS. Also if you think about it, distributed power is an excellent idea. You can keep your entire train in check. But Ohio is actually a great place for trains.

Wow Danny, great video of my neck of the woods! I live in Marysville and my 4 year old son and I love to railfan in Marion about once a month. He would’ve lost his mind if we would’ve run into you (and me for that matter)! Thanks for sharing our great area with the world! - Jake

Excellent drone skills plus video editing skills mixing drone coverage with camera on tripod coverage and excellent voice overs. And it's cool see you and your son capturing everything from the drone itself. Thank you for sharing.

Great video as always! Been watching for years! If you ever have the chance to check it out, a great place for railfanning is the Minnesota Iron Range on the CN... Great scenery, very remote (little to no people asking what you're doing), and standard cabs leading trains everywhere. Highly recommend it. Keep up the great videos! They never get old!

Hi Danny you might want to consider Conneaut Ohio for the Nickel Plate Road railroad museum. They also have a museum on the north side the main line tracks and a steam engine on display coupled to a couple of car and a caboose. I do have photos also. Charlie G.

Railroads should be funded by the state, owned by the public, and run by the rail workers. Give rail workers' unions whatever the heck they want, and build whatever the heck we need, and to hell with "profits".

Come up to Northern MN, my girlfriend is actually in Tampa right now. The train watching here is amazing, and bring your son too, and I'm sure he'll see things he never has seen before. I remember when I visited Tampa last summer, and I was amazed at a Wawa. From your friend up north, have a Merry Christmas!
