Car crashes kill thousands of Americans, and people with ADHD are disproportionately involved in them. ADHD could contribute in a number of ways to car accidents, but a recent study indicates that inability to control attention (distractibility) is more to blame than troubles sustaining attention, orienting to important cues, or impulsivity.

Good information. I always have been very focused when driving and do not use cellphone to talk or text. I know myself in that I’m not capable of that type of distraction. I never caused an accident or had any speeding tickets and am proud of that. I know what that can do. I was a volunteer fireman for 20 years as a teenager and young man. I’ve seen what happens. Accidents even on straight sections of roads.... inattention and reaction time can change some peoples lives in seconds. I’m glad you looked into this and will strive harder to pay attention even more...I recently was diagnosed with add and that explains a lot in my life. Love your expert videos!

One peice of advice for my ADHD fellows: Get a manual transmission. I noticed I became significantly more aware and alert of road conditions after switching. I feel like I pay more attention because I am watching for things that would require shifting-gears. Also, having an extra task for my right hand reduces distractions from misguided multi-tasking.

This could be helpful, but for someone with ADHD a manual transmission could prove too distracting - so try it out in a safe driving space before making any big commitments.
