I am reviewing (for possible interview) while refreshing my knowledge now that's why I noticed your videos. Lost my job end of July 2013 in Toronto Canada. I was datacenter manager previously on my last job, sadly the IT department and my datacenter (mostly financial apps) is now in Quebec (previously located in near Toronto in Markham) . Thank you again for doing this for IT professionals like me.

I never encountered an IT person like you Sir!! Your voice and expertise and how you convey your knowledge is just extra ordinary. You inject both intelligence and smartness in your video.

Thanks very much. We are working on some Windows Server 2012 videos at the moment. Should have the first one released in a month or so.

No, think of DFS as the same as a file share. If it is not available it can not be accessed. If you want to make a file share available offline use offline files. This will sync the files when the user connects up to the network. Offline files will work with a share or DFS.

The file replication system works quiet well. I guess compared to other replication systems the interface may not be as good. Also since it is tied in with the domain it makes it a bit limited in some regards. I guess you could ask yourself, why do people buy a firewall when Windows comes with a firewall. A lot of time it has to do with the interface and some additional features.

Thanks a lot, great video. You might need to point out that the sharing permission for all DFS sharing folders should be consistent and should be set by accessing the files in the "DFSRoots" folder on the server, or you might face weird permission behaviour.
@itfreetraining7 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent point. As the system will take the most restrictive permissions as priority, it leads to cases where the share permissions override the NTFS permissions. So in many cases, the best option is to set the share permissions for "Everyone" to have access and then use NTFS permissions to control the access in a more granular way.

Hi, Can DFS be setup to be available even though the client does not have access to the shared file server, and sync when connected to it? Thank you.

I have become you fan.....thanks a lot :). I work as a system admin and I noticed that people are not using Windows replication for Files servers (Target servers) in DFS namespace. one of my cleint is using a product from BlueCoat named ishare. Do you know why? is Windows file replication is not reliable?

Does DFS eliminate the need to do data backups? Why or why not?
@itfreetraining8 жыл бұрын
+jia lin It does not eliminate the need for back ups. Though DFS provides high availability and redundant access, it does not focus on ensuring that there are regular copies and backups of the data in case disastrous changes are made. Furthermore, you should always have a several pronged approach such as on-site, off-site and cloud to ensure that you can truly restore any necessary files. DFS is not concerned so much about revision history or deleted files, and will happily replicate changes without ensuring that backups are available. Always have a stand-alone backup plan available.
