Power transformers and distribution transformers both serve critical roles in the electrical power distribution system, but they differ in terms of function, design, and application: 1. Purpose Power Transformer: Primarily used in transmission networks to step up or step down voltage levels at high power levels (typically over 33 kV). They operate at higher voltages to transmit electricity over long distances efficiently, reducing power loss. Distribution Transformer: Used to step down the voltage to usable levels for homes and businesses, typically below 33 kV. They operate in the distribution network, bringing electricity from the transmission lines to end users. 2. Location in the Power System Power Transformer: Located in generating stations and transmission substations where voltage needs to be adjusted for long-distance travel. Distribution Transformer: Located near end users, either on poles or within neighborhoods, to supply usable voltage levels for residential, commercial, or small industrial applications. 3. Size and Capacity Power Transformer: Larger in size and capacity, usually ranging from a few MVA to several hundred MVA. Distribution Transformer: Smaller in size, typically ranging from a few kVA to around 5 MVA. 4. Load Handling and Efficiency Power Transformer: Designed to handle a near-constant high load, operating close to full load most of the time, and optimized for maximum efficiency at higher loads. Distribution Transformer: Designed to handle variable loads, as the demand from residential and commercial areas changes frequently. They are optimized for efficiency at lower load levels. 5. Operation Time Power Transformer: Operates continuously at full load or close to it. Distribution Transformer: Can experience load variations and does not always operate at full load, particularly during off-peak times. 6. Construction and Design Power Transformer: Generally, oil-cooled and built for higher insulation to withstand high voltages. Distribution Transformer: Can be oil-cooled or dry-type and is designed to be low-cost and low-maintenance for installation in proximity to users.
