This song is about people disconnecting from one another. "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening". It was written by Paul Simon, of Simon and Garfunkel, in 1963/1964. Art Garfunkel revealed the message of the song with the following: "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other." It's an incredibly insightful song, as it was released nearly 60 years ago (1964) and here, in 2020, you see people walking around with their faces buried in their cell phones; Playing games, talking through text messages (again, talking without speaking, hearing without listening) and spending so much time in front of the television...And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they'd made. Since someone else will 100% post this, many people take the original version as a warning about the dangerous path we were heading down and this version as the anger over the warning not being heeded. Also, for the record, yes: Disturbed IS a metal band.

Wow thank you for all this information, my music radar well and truly took a battering in this one, but I understand the message now since I have been educated buy you good bunch! I'll definitely react to more disturbed, I loved the rasp in his voice towards the end, and I would like to hear that in a metal song, thanks for watching, I'll try to be better on the next disturbed song 😁🤘

I like the way its almost like the 60s version was a polite, plaintive warning about the path we where on and the new one is an angry condemnation of our inattention to the warning.

@@coyotej4895 I SUSPECT (I have no actual evidence) that Simon and Garfunkel's record label agreed to release the song, but only if S&G lightened the mood up. Remember, this was written in the months after the Kennedy assassination and while the U.S. was involved in the Vietnam War. Record labels were much more controlling over their artists back then and they were not going to risk doing anything to make it seem their label was reactionary in those troubled times. If my premise is actual fact, then the song would have a bit of irony attached to it, because it would mean that their song (as intended) was the song "that voices never share - no one dare disturb the sound of silence."

This is not about a guy singing about his depression. This is about the inability to connect and communicate with each other. "But my words like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the wells of silence." We are so busy with the noise between our ears, how do I look? Should I get that car? and thinking what point we want to get across to people instead of listening with our souls. I think many listen to this song and stand to far away from themselves. Feel it in your gut!

Great reaction!! Really loved it!! 💖💖 I can tell you that I have grown up with the original, I was listening to it when I needed to relax and put my mind at ease, it's soft and melodic, but I have NEVER payed attention to the lyrics... I was like a child waiting for their bed time story not because being interested in the story, but because they loved their mother's voice... The day I have first seen the Disturbed's version popping up on my KZbin I was afraid to press the "play" button... mainly because I had already known Disturbed and I wasn't sure I would like a heavy metal cover. Had previously seen a few more covers and haven't been impressed... but curiosity won and... saying that I have heard the best cover ever and it goes well above the original won't tell enough about how I've felt. For the first time in more than 25 years, I had listened to the lyrics, I had to, David Draiman's voice simply commeded that . And I got the message, in my own way, of course. Because, in my oppinion, the lyrics are now more true than ever before. Music is, and hopefully will always be, the best human way of expressing one's feelings, from the deepest rage to the deepest love. When the instrument are destroyed and people are writting songs "that voices never share" it is like somebody is really trying to shout the mankind down, for the feelings not to be spoken anymore, or even felt anymore. It's like somebody trying to turn us into biorobots... and this is EXACTLY what's going on now-a-days. Society forcing us to follow patterns. Forcing us to stay aligned to some "social standards". We are afraid to speack our minds ("people talking without speaking") either because the others would not understand us ("people hear without listening"), or they would use our words and feelings against us in this crazy race to get better social possition, to make more money, to get possition of power and becoming the so-called "gods" playing with others' destinies, as the ppl behind the current technologies had become. We've become more and more distant from each other, dependent on technologies ("the Neon God they've made" - so true, it was us buying their technology and giving them power over us) deaf to others' screaming for help, blind to their sufference, slowly loosing our humanity, slowly embedding ourseves in our bubble of silence, sure victims of current or future deppresios ("the darkness", the "old friend"). Now, Disturbed had chosen this name especially because they were bent to sing EXACTLY about this kind of things, about the "disturbing" problems of our society, namely, about how society is treating ppl who are different, either having mental disorders, or simply being different, individualities standing out for their ideas or ways of being. But the thing I really love about Disturbed (and yes, they are my nr 1 favourite band of all times and all genres) is that they do more than complainig about the actual situation, they are really try to fight it. They are always trying to open our eyes and minds against any manipulation used against us. The reason their version of this song is a battle cry. Something like: "Haven't you heard the warning? Hey, wake up! Time to hear US, at least, and DO something!!!" My oppinion, of course, no offence or disrespect intended. And sorry for the long post.☺️ Now, if you like ballads, they're having some good ones, like "A Reason To Fight" , "Hold On To Memories", "Darkness", "Uninvited Guest", "Already Gone", "Watch You Burn". If you like heavy metal, the list is too long, LOL! Because, in my oppinion, all their songs are good! ☺️

And exactly what do you think he does for a living? If not for my parents, I never would have known this song. It may be iconic in the US, but it is quite old, and unless you were living in the 60/70’s, whoever knows this song and was born after most likely was shown by someone who did. Get a life. There aren't that many singers around (that I can find) that have the lower bass/baritone notes going like Draiman does. He's quality. Okay, reminder! Please do more My Chem! I know the original intention of the song is about people not communicating or connecting with each other, talking without speaking, listening without hearing, too busy being slaves to technology... But your analogy of depression is not far off either. It was written after a very disturbing dream that Paul Simon had about people not realising the hell they were descending into and feeling that he was alone in seeing it. Feeling alone in your own personal hell, is, after all, the epitomy of depression. The song is about the singer's loneliness in trying to be heard, trying to warn people who don't hear him, but also the loneliness of the thousands of people who aren't really connecting with each other as a result of not seeing what he sees. So yes, you were right to a degree, even if some of the other stuff was wide of the mark, the overall feeling you definitely understood.

Here are two Disturbed songs for you: 'Stupify' (which I believe is from their first CD) and 'Down with the Sickness.' The lead singer, David Draiman, was one of several lead singers in metal bands--with strong, baritone voices and a good range, asked to sing the songs for the Vampire Lestat in the film "Queen of the Damned." David Draiman is the singing voice for the song playing during the opening credits of the film.

A lot of people only see, and hear, the physical, natural, or carnal side of the the message of this song. I believe the message in this song boarders more on spiritual side. hello darkness my old friend, you've come to talk with me again! (hes hearing voices in his head, hes calling it his old friend because this dark place, and the voices hes hearing are no stranger to him. Dream visions are now creeping in and dropping their seeds while hes sleeping..the seeds take hold, are growing, and taking root and now the visions remain in his brain! Hes dreaming hes walking alone and sees a bright light that flashes across the night sky, its so bright it blinding and his eyes can't handle the brightness. My eyes were stabbed by a neon light that split the night. The dream vision reveals.. and in the naked light I see, Ten thousand people may be more, He sees them communicating with each other without speaking or listening without using their voices. They can hear each others thoughts. An unseen world we cant hear or see. because our world is in the natural realm and is audible. While their world is spiritual, a world that can seem silence, compared to our world. And the people bowed and prayed to the neon God they made! He saw Tens of thousands of people bowing and Praying, they were worshiping God, they were writing songs that we will never hear, songs that can never be shared with us..these people were people who had passed away. There was a message given to him, to give to the world!!! Hear my words that I might teach you, Take my arms that I might reach you, and the signs of the prophets are written on the subway walls, or the bible. I guess every one has their own interpretation of this song, this is mine.

It was Simon and Garfunkel and Simon had a dream just like it states in the song and this was his dream and it was about people following a false God's. Nobody could talk nobody could do anything therefore they fell victim to the false God. It's a song of true dispare. I like that he made it dark like it should have been but I also understand why Simon and Garfunkel didn't do it dark. Also Simon heard this song and he loved it. Just info.

You should do Disturbed, Hold on to memories, it's a beautiful song and the sound of it is so different then anything they've done. You also should so, down with the sickness ( I think that's what it's called) I should know the name since I'm a huge fan of Disturbed 😬😁

Ok, I can't resist. Silence, in this context, is all that we hear, but never really listen to. All that we see but never really process. We listen but never truly hear, we read but never understand. Silence can be a cancer, (disease,) or it can be a solitude to escape to. We know the neon gods we pray to, but never see really what they are, and are preached to but never truly listen to the words.

The message is different to everyone. I look at is as a vision of the future where technology has silenced music and free thought. The video shows people in a pilgrimage to recover and save music and instruments as noah saved animals from destruction. Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning, Disturbs version is a cry for help for the warning has not been heeded.

"Fools, say, I, you do not know" Psalms 14 1(To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. 2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. "Hear my words that I might teach you. Take my arms that I might reach you" Matthew @ “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” "But my words like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the wells of silence" Proverbs 18:2 “A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself" "And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made, and the sign flashed out its warning, and the words that it was forming, and the sign said, the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls, and whispered in the sound of silence" Luke @ “And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” Acts 17 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. Romans 3 "And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified FREELY by his GRACE through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation THROUGH FAITH IN HIS BLOOD, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus....Romans 10 "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth...But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of FAITH, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt BE SAVED. For with the heart man believeth UNTO righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made UNTO salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed." Romans @ “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” "Silence...like cancer grows" Romans 10...So then faith cometh by HEARING, and hearing by THE WORD OF GOD...How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not HEARD? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 💌

In spite that Floor is fro the Netherlands, she is almost unknown in her home country!! But she was invited to the show together with a the most famous opera singer in the Netherlands, Henk Port. It will be a demand later on that you do Floor's songs PLUS the one Henk Port sang to Floor - namely her favorite - the Sound of Silence. This is a cover of Simon and Garfunkel from the 60's. I've heard described as "The original is a warning, and the cover is the anger that the warning wasn't heeded." It's a song about society and how we don't really listen to each other or talk about important things because we don't want to disturb the sound of silence, ie meaning we don't want to make waves.
