If these stories are true, the main characters do lack common sense. Who would go to an abandoned house to check if that’s the babysitting location. And 50yo man living with 19yos is disturbing. But what I also don’t get us why she just didn’t take the phone off the hook, as in didn’t put the receiver back down on the main unit?
