Dog's Life is an average yet unique action-adventure game for the Playstation 2. It is basically family friendly GTA as a dog with lots of potty humor (you are a dog after all). You play as an American Foxhound named Jake who falls in love with a Labrador Retriever named Daisy who gets caught by dog catchers.
Eventually you do find the Dog Pound and suddenly the games goofy and light tone turns suddenly crazy dark and disturbing. Bloody crimson skies, neglected dogs in cages, a factory nearby with a dark secret, and a terrifying guard dog constantly on your tail no doubt gave kids nightmares. The music here is also doing a very good job sounding more at home in a survival-horror game. Kirby and Klonoa would both be proud.

There was a Tumblr conversation about this game's endgame. It started with someone joking that "you are about to play one of the most vile games ever created" and someone looked at the 3+ rating on the box and doubted it. Then the poster went into detail on how morbid it was.

Ah yes, A Dog's Life. Such a innocent looking game with a quirky soundtrack and is oddly voice acted. Let's ignore how dog's keep disappearing in this world and instead just run around the happy world of this collectathon like game. While I have no nostalgia for this game either. I am amazed at how many comments talk about the nightmares they got from this section. Doesn't help that once you find out what has been happening to the missing dogs you start to wonder how the hell this game isn't T for Teens. This song NEEDED to be recognized as a DVGM. While I still think there was 1 more song that should be on the list. This one went under everybody's radar for far too long. So thanks for putting it up!

How does a game where you can take a shit on peoples’ doorsteps manage so mortifying?

My lord, dude. I have such a vivid memory related to this, actually. After my grandma retired, she picked up playing video games as a passtime (back during the PS1-days aswell), therefore I often visited her to play. She had given this game to me and I played it in her appartment, on the TV in her bedroom, which was separated from the living room by a corridor. As everybody else who's played is aware of, I had just goofed off with the silly mechanics in the rest of the game's locations, trying to find all the smells, the bones, solve the different "quests" etc. There's one part in the big city where you can just get straight up shot by a robber - which threw me off a little bit, but the overall atmosphere was still chill and cozy. Then, I'm satisfied with my progress and continue through the gate to the Dog Pound... and sweet geez. The oppressive atmosphere, the music, the bloodred skies, the Dobberman hounds chasing you. My wee heart was pounding. Now I ofc had to go be consoled by my grandma, who was in the living room - but the problem was that the corridor in the middle was dark, and the light switch was at the other end of it. I think I frikkin spent some minutes mustering up the courage and then just ran down it to reach safety. These kinds of games, man...

And here it is, the game that scared the hell out of me as a kid. It's not just this part, either. The whole game had occasional little things throughout it that didn't sit right with me back then... not to mention what happens right after this... loved it all though. Glad this game isn't lost to time.

This game gets so insanely dark from this point onwards. The fact that they, if I remember correctly, marketed this game for kids is insane.

Disturbing Meter: 7/10. If the beginning part of the song were the actual song. Then it'll be an 8.5/10.
