As stated in the DVD releases, the racial stereotypes in those toons were wrong then and are wrong now... but it's worse to pretend they never existed.

1:50 You have to keep in mind, that cartoon was made in 1942. At that time, Imperial Japan was an enemy as the US fought in World War 2. This cartoon is part entertainment and part propaganda against the Japanese to prevent unrest at the fact that they were being rounded up and placed into internment camps.

As a young child I remember seeing Speedy Gonzales in the WB cartoons almost every single weekend and then it was just suddenly NOT there anymore. lol.
@suikodudeman11 ай бұрын
Thing is Mexicans LOVE Speedy! … but “offended on their behalf white people”(mostly of a left political leaning, but some on the right too) wanted him gone and sadly he got the boot for a while.
@patrickcromwell755411 ай бұрын
@@crusaderknight6928 Well not really; the show itself was still very much going on, because Speedy Gonzales was only ever a small kind of 3 - 6 minute short anime skit within the larger WB cartoon variety show. The Looney Toons was a massive ensemble of characters and Speedy was just one of them. So it wasn't until he was considered officially banned that most kids ever really noticed at all.

Weird, I remember seeing him alot 🤔
@patrickcromwell75543 ай бұрын
@@theemeraldking3251 Well....I SAY weird, but from what I remember the reason she was "silently removed" was based on racial stereotypes that weren't very accurate nor friendly. It's the same for the "crows" that used to have little bit parts in Tom and Jerry cartoons. There would be three of them that every so often would give a kind of commentary about certain scenes. They were seen as extremely offensive and racist. From what I have learned, it wasn't so much the character itself; Speedy COULD have been a fun comical character; but it was the overall racial stereotype of the environment all put together.

Grew up watching a lot of these cartoons (mainly Tom and Jerry) when I was younger. This was back in the early 2000s when they still ran the ones from the 1940s all the way up to the present day ones. Never really noticed the racist moments in the shows since I was a kid. I always thought the portrayal of a black ma'ma in Tom and Jerry was actually a bear character of some sort lmfao. They made a lot of these racist jokes almost too racist to where u couldn't even compare them or identify the people as humans when you're a kid. Then again, I think these jokes were mainly for the adults who might be watching the show as well.

Who cares? Okay, let me put this into perspective for you. Imagine you were born as a black person in America during or around that time period and constantly being, not only rejected by the world that’s supposed to treat you like a HUMAN BEING at the very least, but also having to see and hear about people who look like you being falsely accused and murdered on a daily basis simply for existing. And on top of all of that, every-time you wanted to watch cartoons as a child being faced with the blatantly false physical and behavioral portrayal of your race due to the idiotic racism created by a group of white people’s ignorance. But hey, it’s just a cartoon who cares, right?
