It may of been a sheltered place but there was so much to do especially for the children, I got to visit a few barracks in my time over there.

Absolutely, we had woodland and a park with a helter skelter slide. The fact we were on a secured estate meant we could stay out late in the summer/outside of school time. It really was a great childhood. I remember my time at Ballykelly primary school well!

Lisanelly Omagh it used to be party central. Most houses got new kitchens and oil heating not long before the camp emptied.

I was a kid in Lisburn from '78 to '80 and went to Harmony Hill school. I still remember walking through the security gate everyday to/from school. In about '76 I was in Ballykinler. In Germany also (Blackwatch in Werl) the army base was simply left to rot. All that infrastructure just abandoned - crazy.

@@lejamisjammy7344 Ah, so did you live on 'the patch' beside Thiepval? I always remember it well because the layout of my area meant that they had houses in the corners! I've never seen them since. At the front the house seemed tiny, but at the back it seemed huge - and we had the biggest garden.

The land was redeveloped for educational purposes, thankfully. This was pre demolition. Most of the raw materials were recycled.

What a shameful waste. This was all built with taxpayers money - my money - and left to decay....there is such a shortage of housing I just can’t understand why they never left them to be occupied by civilians. The naafi supermarket, pool, houses, workshops everything could and should have been reused.

The housing in Portadown Army Barracks were given a facelift and sold off for the public to use, such a waste to see this area being flattened. No doubt further down the road good land was torn up to build new houses
