@@jugganaut33 So will there be no ability to upgrade in the future, for a start it is a brand new railway being built to the same standards as the French TGV lines and HS1 so will not require upgrading for years, so how will it become redundant. The other Railways have ben built for around 100 years now but are not redundant, stop bloody moaning you wouldn't of said a thing if it was a new Motorway being built. I get your point I really do. Think the biggest benefits of this project is to free up capacity on the existing lines for regional and freight traffic since fast train paths take up much more capacity. Also the biggest time savings will be seen when we get HS2 phase 2a and 2b (if we even get 2b). Also less traffic on the roads etc.
@K-o-R
@K-o-R 2 жыл бұрын
@@Konkacha Indeed, but someone decided that because it would be a high-speed rail line, they needed to focus on the (frankly minimal) time savings for passengers instead of the huge practical benefits to other lines. At the moment we can't do any further upgrades or major engineering to the WCML without insane amounts of disruption. A relief line for passengers makes huge sense.

@aib0160
@aib0160 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterwilliamallen1063 How can I have proof until its up and running? What I will say though is there's a reason why they've already cancelled a big chunk of it and its not because it was going to repay the investment. Covid has demonstrated that many meetings can be done via the likes of Zoom and MS Teams so the need for face to face meetings will reduce going forward. Unlike London the likely customer for HS2 don't live near New Street station as they're more likely to be around Sutton Coldfield in the north and Solihull in the south. To get to New Street from these areas will me time consuming and add further expense. If you live in Solihull or the south side of Birmingham it's easier to get to Birmingham International which is 10 miles or so closer to London, will still have express trains running directly to Euston and like as not will be somewhat cheaper, more convenient and just as quick. I live less than 20 miles from New Street station but it would take me an hour by car to get there or 25 minutes by train. Either way I can get an express from my local station that again will take me directly to New Street, or I can get a significantly cheaper commuter train that is a good bit cheaper and an hour slower but still a better alternative to getting to New Street. The money would have been better spend building a freight railway that wouldn't require the significantly additional cost of running faster trains. Bringing in freight from our existing ports and soon to have new free ports is a higher priority that we would all see the benefit from as it will reduce the traffic on our existing road network and free up capacity of the existing rail network between London, Birmingham and beyond. The main reason for the need for HS2 is because folk can't afford to Live in London, or want a better quality of life outside of London. So, a much better way is to reduce the demand and better "level up" our nation by encouraging business and governments to relocate out of London. For example a utility doesn't need to have a headquarters based in London, if it were moved out the jobs would move with it, the site could be repurposed for dwellings and as demand for housing drops so will the prices.
@peterwilliamallen1063
@peterwilliamallen1063 2 жыл бұрын
@@aib0160 They have not cancelled the Eastern leg because of working from home just costs, HS2 will not run from Birmingham New Street and hardly any services apart from the semi fast services run by West Midlands trains subsidiary LNWR will go from New Street to Euston except the odd train, as Avanti west Coast will be running HS2 and the high speed West Coast trains into Euston they will deliver train services according to need. If you live on the EAST side of Birmingham not the South and Solihull you will be able to use HS2 trains from the new Birmingham Interchange station that will be built along side Birmingham international Station and Birmingham International Airport. So what if people do not live near New Street or Curzon Street stations, no one lives near any of the London Terminal Stations and to get to tourist spots or municipal housing in London you have to travel by Taxi, Tube or Bus but it does not seem to bother any one, so what's the problem in Birmingham, the train you catch from Home to New Street you could stay on and change at Birmingham International, HS2 is to relieve Birmingham New Street of congestion so more local and cross country trains can use it.
@aib0160
@aib0160 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterwilliamallen1063 So it was cancelled because it costs more than it's worth? Is the business model so out of date that it doesn't recognise that with the advances in new technology that business travel is likely to fall? HS2 will run into Curzon Street station, this is equally as hard to get to as New Street, but unlike New Street you'll probably not be able to catch a commuter train to it from within the West Midlands region making it less convenient to use. The people that are likely to use HS2 will not live near Curzon Street station either. Birmingham doesn't have the public transport infrastructure like London does, so getting to and from Curzon Street for most potential users will be more trouble than its worth. The cost of using HS2 still hasn't been announced but most agree it'll not be the cheapest way to get to London by train and again most will also find that its not the most convenient way either. As I said, its a complete white elephant and will only serve to be a money pit few want. The reason for its perceived need also still hasn't been addressed, there's easier and cheaper ways to reduce the need that everybody will benefit from and not just the very few. Millions will be facing years of HS2 disruption, ancient woodland felled, homes demolished and farms decimated yet the vast majority will never use it.

1)It is not 10 minutes quicker- it is 35 minutes Birmigham London, 1 hour Manchester London and 50 minutes quicker Birmingham Manchester all representing about half of current journey times, they will all be more frequent, have more capacity and be more realiable aswell. Due to the link with the existing rail network for trains to continue to Scotland it will make London Glasgow 50 mintues quicker making a signifficant difference to domestic flights (also because the higher capacity that will be achived for London Scotland trains will allow them to increase there modal share over flying which is currently limited by there being no space on the network for more trains.) 2) But none of that is really the point, the point is that the current victorian network is extremley congested having to handle a mixture of express, regional local and freight services. It has already gone through a lot of expesnisve and disruptive upgrades and more upgrades to the existing lines can not achive that much. By seperating the express trains which cause a big gap in the tiemetable as they com through a lot more local regional and freight services (each freight train takes 76 lorries of the road) can run allowing the existing mainlines and the lines that feed into the mainlines resulting in many towns up and down the coountry including some far from the route of hs2 which have trains feeding on to the mainlines or are limited by bottlenecks hs2 solves can benefit from a far improved service.

High speed rail runs throughout all of Europe, comes through the Chanel tunnel, to London and then stops, the trains don't even have the option of using the existing lines as the British gauge is too restrictive for the trains used throughout the rest of Europe to use, if we want rail to ever compete with air/car travel, projects like this are vital

I'm not convinced by the argument that Birmingham will benefit to the extent touted, we already have firms like HSBC and PWC relocating to Birmingham because it's cheaper for them than London. Better local links would be a start - e.g. rather than one train every half hour where I am into Birmingham, which often get cancelled, it would be nice for people who already work in the area to be able to do so.
