Do it, you won't regret it. I'm professional graphic designer - print based. I haven't used Adobe since CS6 so I can't compare to latest versions but Affinity does everything I need. A small learning curve. Some features were missing in version 1, but they often appear with free updates. I paid $150 for Publisher, Photo and Designer.

yes, I want to ditch Adobe CC in 2023, but have a problem: I stopped using Adobe CC for a while, but I'm back now and have an Adobe CC subscription again. Because my problem was to open my files, from earlier, in both Indesign and illustrator and eps and I could not open pdf files I had created in Adobe at all. Affinity programs are really good and clip studio paint for digital painting so if I was new to this kind of programs I wouldn't choose adobe CC but the problem is opening my old files and that's important to me.

Yep that is a problem, the further you go with Adobe the harder it is to leave that is all part of their plan for lock in. You could find out if a library or university near you has Adobe CC and then when you need to get an old file you could go there, open it, convert it in to a compatible format, and then edit in a different program, but that would be annoying.

Affinity is incredible I've been using it for 2 yrs + ❤ I didn't need to upgrade to affinity 2.0 but did just to support the company so that they keep being amazing I hope they continue to keep making amazing software

Love the videos and insights Ben. I agree with many of the comments as well. After over 30 years (yep, Illustrator v.1) I left Adobe CC a few years back and have no regrets. The Affinity suite has filled all my needs and in the case of a few few holes (Designer's lack of blend and image trace) there are workarounds. I originally left for price reasons however, if you have even a slightly successful design business going, the monthly cost is not an issue and is further softened by the tax break as a business necessary expense. Over time however, the real issue was that I'm always tied to a 3rd party as my creative files are never really mine. It's like buying the locks but renting the key. Thankfully my Adobe files have all opened well in Affinity (minus some of the fonts), however Adobe doesn't play well with others so opening files saved as Affinity or other competitors' files becomes problematic at best, if not completely unsuccessful. Looking forward to what's ahead for Affinity.

For me, it's true that there are others softwares outside which are better or equal to Adobe programs, and you only pay one time. But the only one software that doesn't fully replace one in Adobe is after effects. AE it's still the goat one for comercial. And if you use AE you must use Premiere cause of the dynamic link.

I would take some time to discover if you can actually do what you want in fusion in DaVinci, having everything together (and not crashing) is actually way better than dynamic link. Fusion can actually do a lot more than people give it credit for and is getting better every year, you just have to be willing to learn the node system. Casey Ferris and Mr. Alex Tech are great channels for learning more.

Perhaps there is room for both? But IMO it all depends upon your skill level with any given package. I have been using Photoshop for about 25+ years and seen it change and grow, albeit perhaps not so much of late. Ditto Lightroom - I was in at the beginning and, as a photographer primarily, find I use it more than Photoshop now. So for these apps I can't envisage switching any time soon. However for other areas, where I have yet to acquire the knowledge, skill and usage experience, then that's a different story. I'm now looking at a multi supplier approach, not least because I never did much like the Adobe subscription model! I recently bought a Studio license for DaVinchi Resolve and feel that, as a newbie video editor, I might just as well devote my time and effort in learning DVR rather than Premier. Plus it seems superior in several respects - not least stability. I'm shortly going explore desktop publishing options as I have an imminent need to produce an A4 catalogue, with a high level of design finesse. I'm probably going to buy an Affinity Publisher v2 license rather than spend time learning to use Adobe's In Design. I hope it can work well with Lightroom and Photoshop (any views?). If I had a graphic design need (nothing imminent) then I'd seriously consider Affinity Design rather than Illustrator - but, as mentioned above, it has as much to do with my familiarity and comfort level as absolute cost. If Adobe were to start adding restrictions or upped their cost then that would also force me to explore alternatives to Photoshop and LR, but for now I think I'll stay Adobe on those apps and keep looking out for future changes and market movements. IMO time and cost invested in learning is worth far more than the cost of buying any one license or subscription. You don't want to 'back the wrong horse' as it's just effort 'down the drain'. So in that sense at least I can understand why many pro users swear by the Adobe stable of creative apps. If I could acquire knowledge and skill as easily as the many books and training courses I buy then I'd be pretty smart by now. Instead I have an extensive 'help' library, many apps, not much time, and too many things to achieve to the point where, honestly, I find it difficult to cope some days. Oh .... to be really smart and good at almost everything - now that really would be worth paying for!

oh sure there is room for both, I take it you are using the Photographer plan from Adobe to get Ps and Lr, that is an ok deal. I do love Affinity Publisher, I would check it out in the trial before purchasing though to make sure it can do what you need it do. As a designer I find it fantastic, but I know that some publishers have not, so just check the features first based on your needs. For me the effort to switch between programs of the same type, such as Affinity Photo and Photoshop is minimal, they are so similar that it is not difficult to learn one if you know the other.

There's one nice aspect of Affinity Photo and Designer that is only rarely mentioned: They use essentially the same (internal) file format, and you can open both file types with the other application and work on the files seamlessly (AP being better with image editing and pixel layers, AD being better with vector editing and the respective layers). Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator can't hold a candle to the Affinity apps in this regard!

I never kept much saved in creative cloud besides color palettes. It never seemed like a good idea to me to invest too much into Adobes system since that would just lock me in further. For colors yes I manually transferred as I needed.

Ditched Adobe for Corel when they went subscription only. And then dumped Corel for Affinity when they went to a subscription model and made their perpetual licence far too expensive, esp as they've now gone to a yearly upgrade. Affinity is not only much more sensibly priced, the parent company Serif have pretty regular deals, reducing the already low cost significantly.

Well I don't really consider Acrobat to be a creative program...since it is pretty boring and annoying. Unfortunately there are lots of PDF readers that can be used to fill PDFs but not a lot of real editors that I have found. I feel like Acrobat is the program most likely to be subscribed to on its own because it is needed in different situations than the other programs and also very hard to replace if it is needed.

@@bendesignsmedia haha well I was using Premiere way back before it even had CUDA acceleration. I had a LONG time to get pissed off with it even before Creative Cloud came along. I remember when they bought Speedgrade after they had added CUDA and the Mercury engine, it looked promising. Then they just took the Lumetri colour engine from it and killed it, and just sort of botched that into Premiere. They took a proper grading programme and instead of doing a Resolve (making it a tab in the same programme, working to make all the parts fit together) they just kinda gave up and butchered it into the mess that is Premiere. The final straw was when I was editing live reports, very quick turnaround stuff, and Premiere kept crashing and failing to export. I installed Resolve 12 free version there and then, and was amazed it ACTUALLY USED THE GPU TO FULL EFFECT. Finished every edit faster than before despite my lack of familiarity, purely due to stability and render/export speed. After that I was done with Premiere, and became a RESOLVE PREACHER hahaha

If you are using it for video the DaVinci already has fairlight built in for advanced audio work, for music and other audio specific mixing I'm no expert but people seem to like Logic Pro, or Pro Tools, I've actually never used either though.

As always, great video Ben. My prediction is, that we're definitely going to see more people moving away from Adobe in favour of more affordable alternatives. At the very least, I'm sure many designers, agencies and studios will adjust their subscription packages. Since it's foreseeable that 2023 will also be THE YEAR where the market is flooded with many more mature (and affordable) AI programs, it's also pretty certain that breaking away from Adobe will be the next logical step for many. Also because we are at the beginning with Affinity 2.0 and I am sure that AI tools will be added in some form - whether integrated, or via plug-ins/scripts, remains to be seen. *My personal prediction for 2023 and beyond is this:* 1.) *For the first time in a long time, small and medium-sized companies (indie studios) in the media industry could have a head start over larger companies.* Meaning: Larger studios and agencies cannot simply change their work processes from one month to another. Large companies are usually more dependent on each other (whether financially or structurally, due to long mutual contract periods). It will take much longer for them to integrate these new (AI-)Tools into their pipeline and thus be able to capitalize on these new opportunities. Not because they are slow or unable to adapt, but - I suspect - more because for legal reasons, because financially they would either need to fire more people in order to be proftiable again, and also because there are a lot of legal issues that need to be addressed first. The datasets of many current AI programs are based on artworks that belong to other artists but were used without their consent. I really hope that the laws will protect freelancers in particular. Otherwise we will have a similar problem as on KZbin - where big music companies arbitrarily sue smaller freelance artists and musicians for copyright infringement because some music notes coincidentally match up with other songs. 2.) *The competition in the advertising industry could continue to escalate - which could benefit freelancers.* Let's say a freelance designer is using AI tools and is able to do the work of 10 people, he will dominate over traditional agencies. Imagine this: A larger publishing agency is charging their clients 15,000 € (number is based on an assignment I was involved with) for designing a print-ready layout of a magazine issue. Let's say a freelancer is able to deliver the same work for the same amount of time (especially if there is already an existing CI-guide), he can offer his service for less money (5000€ to 10.000€) + plus he can diversify his services which is something not so easy for bigger companies (also for legal reasons). This is also the reason why I decided to become self-employed in 2023, because as an employee in the advertising industry you can no longer expect salaries that would allow you to finance the necessary living expenses. I think I will also start a KZbin channel there (but not so much to make money from it). Might also be interesting for many graphic design colleagues to follow my process, especially as I have a hearing impairment and can shed light on my past and other aspects. 3.) *Before Serif is integrating some AI tools to their suite, I'm sure they will add some other tools first.* There are still some missing features - such as certain advanced automation features - that could be implemented, which don't necessarily require sophisticated AI tools, but are still useful for everyday work (especially when you have to work with external documents/spreadsheets or datasets). 4.) *In 2023 we will see a boom in Affinity tutorials.* We will also start to see many professional paid courses and seminars where some Adobe programs will be replaced with Affinity programs. Also many design fundamentals will be taught in new ways (knowledge is the same, but teached in a way where people can artistically progress faster). 5.) *There will still be people who can't live without Adobe completely (probably will remain so for many more years to come),* but they will be able to start customizing their Adobe subscription plans. Instead of subscribing to the entire Creative Cloud, they will only need to subscribe to individual apps for which they have not found reasonable replacements yet. There are certainly some generalists who have been dependent on the Creative Cloud and Substance 3D Suite up to now. So some could do without the Creative Cloud entirely and then only subscribe to the Substance 3D Suite. 6.) *I also have one grim prediction regarding the economic development of the profession as a freelance designer in general:* Since AI and copyright law are becoming more important as the years go on (because many legal issues need to be re-evaluated), this could affect the professional future of many media designers for the worse. If we are unlucky, the rules become so complicated (and in favor of big companies) that freelancers can still practice their professions, but it will not be possible to make a reasonable living with it, because certain expenses (by bureaucratic requirements) make it impossible to keep up with bigger studios and agencies. The practice of an artistic profession will then only be realistic in an underpaid employment relationship - for example at larger studios or agencies, which is sad because they have gained a bad reputation in recent years. In addition, individual artistic freedom will only be exercised as a hobby. The assumption is based on the fact that precisely because AI programs enable individual artists to handle complex projects, the boundaries between corporate and individual projects are starting to disappear and rules becoming unified, i.e. rules apply to both companies and individual entrepreneurs. I hope I haven't bored you. May 2023 be a prosperous year for you.

Oh, by the way, people can easily switch to Designer and publisher nowadays. Designer can open AI files containing a PDF stream, and Affinity Publisher can open and import InDesign files in idml-format (InDesign Markup Language). That's how I did it when I switched to Affinity. For every InDesign file, I additionally exported an .idml- file so that I can open those files with Publisher and start to continue to work on them. I'm sure you already know this, but if you're planning on making a video for your viewers on how to export Illustrator and InDesign files to Affinity, I just wanted to let you know that.

Hey Josua, thanks as always for watching! You always give great well thought out responses. On this note about opening up Adobe files, this is true and I have done videos in the past for V1 about them, I haven't done thorough testing in V2 yet. I know that in the past PSD was the most reliable opening in Photo, followed by IDML in Affinity Publisher, followed by PDF stream in Designer. Depending on how complicated the Illustrator project was and what features it used the PDF stream could be unreliable. The other big issue for a lot of people though is going back the other way when your client or collaborator wants to receive INDD or AI files.

I'm staying with Adobe CS6 (Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and if need be I could get away with Photoshop CS6) for my professional work, supplemented with the Photography Plan (primarily for Lightroom, but also for advanced features in Photoshop, and I get font access too, even though only limited to Photoshop images). I only rarely need a video editor - and I use DaVinci Resolve for that (nice to know that it has come to the iPad, even though I can't use mine for most of my work, just too limited). I have started to use Affinity Photo and Designer here and there, because both can lead to solutions for specific rendering problems, or to open the one or other SVG or EPS file were AI struggles (and vice versa). Other than those occasional uses, the (old) Adobe programs work better for my needs. I might ditch Adobe some years from now when I retire (6 years ahead if nothing goes wrong) and completely switch to other alternatives (most likely Affinity apps and some additions here and there).

Maybe, but it seems unlikely, Figma was actually threatening Adobe because XD was not as good and because they had much better collaboration features. Serif has been making Adobe competitors for many years and I’ve never heard of Adobe be interested in buying them. But you are right, if they get big enough that is Adobe’s pattern.

Nice. Unfortunately the open source programs tend to be too difficult for a lot of less tech savvy people, so they are harder to recommend.

@@bendesignsmedia Hi Ben. I am using Adobe Bridge (it is free), Affinity V1 (waiting for another discount on V2) and instead of Lightroom -> Luminar Neo.

@@bendesignsmedia Hi Ben. They changed and improved really a lot since then. 👍🏼 I like the app for editing my Fujifilm RAF files. What I dont like yet: it is much slower as Lightroom, and there is no way to add keywords and metadata. 👎🏽

Affinity doesn't have an alternative to Adobe Lightroom. So no, I will not switch.

The versions are very similar between Mac and PC, and traditionally many creative professionals have chosen to work on Macs. Since the introduction of Apple Silicon in 2020 Macs have certainly been faster at running creative programs than PCs with Intel silicon.
