I know a lot of people who share my eclectic tastes and interests but thought it was too 'broad' but they actually overlap if you add neurodivergent creativity into the equation. Thank you for that! Have been watching more of your "niche" videos as well so keep them coming! I've been able to work on "who" to, I think, are those who do not want to learn how to make the digital graphics I create (papers, patterns, illustrations, etc.). But I also love creating patterns for POD shops (Spoonflower, Zazzle, etc.) so those are two different "who's". If I look at what has sold more over the years it's definitely the digital products as opposed to POD. You'd think that would make it an easy decision because I don't how how to "marry" those two who's together or if I should even try. Still learning at "ditching the niche". 😊

I'm always deciding wether I want to do iPad Pro illustations, Watercolor, oil paint, lino cutting or graphic design. At the end of the day I love all of them and worrying about which one is better to choose takes away time from creating.

I have a similar struggle in that I love to create multiple digital products (patterns, illustrations, stickers, etc.) but struggle with my "who". In the beginning it was digital scrapbook papers so my "who" was digital scrapbookers. But I also love creating products for POD (Spoonflower, Zazzle, etc.) so the "who" is different. If I look at which sells more, it's my digital products way and above my POD sales so it should make it easy ... but that "squirrel syndrome" is constantly getting in my way!

I never wanted to be on board with the niche thing to begin with! So I quietly ditched it from the beginning. I do think we need to know who we are talking to though. And I honestly feel like if we know that person well, it doesn't matter what niche or product line our product falls into because we made it personal for a person not general for a market.

I’m sorry if I’m misunderstanding. Doesn’t this mean that you should niche to grow and gradually increase your topics once you’ve built an audience? Like pick a problem that you solve then gradually increase the problems you solve. Because talking about a tool, industry, topic, or strategy isn’t actually picking a niche, and that’s where people get pigeonholed into. And if you talk about anything that your “who” likes then you won’t gain any authority and it’s harder to trust you. I could narrow down to small business owners with chronic illnesses. But that alone would mean that I could talk about ADA compliance on websites or medication management with inconsistent income. Or I could talk about branding as a person with a disability (how much is too much to disclose) or about automating systems for energy management. It’s going to be hard to get people to trust me in all of those areas. Especially if I’m just starting out. If I already had an audience who knew me for automation for energy management then it’s easier to add to that expertise than for me to come out of the nowhere as an expert in all of those. That’s why successful businesses (ex. Amazon, Microsoft, Disney, etc.) grew so much. They started with one thing then moved outward. Unless I’m misunderstanding your advice here.

I like video it's a very expansive format. You can have different themed videos in the same niche, so instead of just making jewelry you could talk about how you started, how you'd start all over again, critique other people's jewelry for inspiration and incorporate that into your own methods, take a trip to the jewelry store, interview other creators, discuss trends, etc. All the stuff people talk about with wearing, making, and selling jewelry; all that's possible content.
