Entertaining and informational as always Dylan. I'm (still) in the OSC-camp, but something like this is what could probably make me want to dip my toes into mono. Since I'm not locked into the ZWO-world, I can get started right away too. I've watched both Luke and Cuivs videos on it as well and combined with yours, it's really difficult not to press that "add to cart and checkout" button.

I worked with very small image sensors for so long , That when I finally got to four thirds , I felt like it was giant. I think people under estimate what small sensors can do. No matter how many pixels you have , Your not going to magnify Jupiter enough to fit on about (often said - 600x600 pixels or less) I have often got Jupiter to cover 1000x1000. So on a 5 mp sensor , Your wasting a lot of pixels and getting the heat n noise from them and increasing the file size w unused pixels etc.. Love the show!

This is the third video I’ve seen about the Minicam and it looks excellent. I’m thinking about it for my Redcat 71 Petxval rig. I’d bank on the blue channel looking decent with a Petxval. I could then switch my 394 over permanently to my Newt. I wish the filters were a little narrower than 7nm. But, for the price, it’s a steal.

I have the 62ED and this setup is definitely my path forward to making a fool of myself in astrophotography. I have been told I need the flattener no matter what but I have seen some pretty impressive images shot without it. It would be great if you could expand on this. Cheers from Melbourne.

The only color camera I own is a all sky planetary camera used for planetary and aurora. As enticing as the minicam 8 is the problem i have still remains no m42 adapter same issue with my medium qhy filter wheel and a custom m42 to m48 adapter to make it work is over $100 because the m42 to m48 ring adapter will just thread straight through the m48 spacer on the filter wheel allowing the camera to free spin during slewing.. I've been using a colour one (ASI585MC Pro) with my Red Cat51 for almost a year and have been really happy with the results. I know some people think its a bit small but It suits me fine. @PilotPhteven
@PilotPhteven 15 күн бұрын
not sure I'd say they dropped the ball.. I mean.. you can get a cheap mono zwo camera, they have filter wheels, they have cheap filters.. pretty much anything you need is available through zwo... granted..in bits.. And you can (and should) wonder how sensible it is to have this all in one package, in a hobby where upgrading parts of a rig is very common. People love moaning towards ZWO for having a locked ecosystem.. so how is this any different. Especially when this one requiring very specific and "custom" size filters that no other company makes. Sure you can brag about cost-reduction because the filters are perfectly matched.. but.. You have no way of upgrading the filters with this custom size, except if they parter up with astrodon, antlia, explore scientific, etc.. but I kinda doubt that they would do that for just the one camera and one specific sensor. sure, ZWO could have perhaps done more with the GT line, the one with filterwheel+camera in one which currently only offers a 183 cooled version.. planetary non-cooled versions might be interesting. But again, there are benefits to keeping bits separate..

If it worked it feels like a good pairing with the C14 Hyperstar. The band pass is quite wide and the sensor quite small so wavelength shift may not be too bad. The entire unit is smaller than the C14 secondary mirror obstruction, although a bit off axis. Automated narrow band at f2 with a pretty tight FoV (small sensor). Pretty sure it's a symptom of high cloud which messes up my blue channel on the big rig too, but also the doublet I was using which is known for its trashy blue also. They combined to produce the worst blue channel I'd ever seen haha.

@@DylanODonnell shouldn't that "trasiness" be lost when you go to mono and only focusing a single wavelength and not trying to compromise a focus for RGB? I can se this camera being on back order for quite a while at the price point.

as you said, I also see a potential for this camera to do photometry if they offered a version replacing the RGBL-Ha-OIII-SII filters with, for example, some Sloan u-g-r-i + Ha SII OIII filters. Actually, I think that would make a hell lot of an interesting product!.

The Evolux 82 afaik is not a good doublet. Lots of purple fringe. I don't know what skywatcher thought they were doing. I think even the Evostar 72ED is much better. Now, If you have an Evoguide with flattener, it could be cool to try it out with this tiny mini camera+filter wheel.

Ok. So please cut me some slack on this subject, because although I have began the earliest stages of dipping my toe into astrophotography (meaning bought the mount for tracking, camera, etc.) but unfortunately I haven't done so well with figuring out the tracking part just yet lol. So anyway, I've always wondered with so many people going the astrophotography direction, what is the purpose of so many people doing so. Meaning, are these images captured solely for personal use, or is there some sort of market for people's images of the night sky? Again please be gentle, for I am nearly a virgin 🤣🤣🤣🤣
