My father ended up with dementia, but for his last five years he and I sang this song every week. He missed my mother so much, and they both loved the South Pacific soundtrack. Such a beautiful little song! ❤

I saw it at the cinema in Leeds when it was first released, the final scene came to its climax, and as soon as the credits began the cinema put all the main lights on, and 99% of the audience were dabbing the tears from their eyes.......Me included. I am a guy who is now 84 years of age, and I play this film on the PC at least once a month.

My first acting and singing job was playing the female child way back in 1954. Talent scouts went to all the grade schools looking for children who could sing a song in French. Because I was blonde with brown eyes production had me apply a dark rinse to my hair and a quick tanning product called Man Tan. The young Sophomore named Anita Bryant belted out, "Gonna Wash That Man Right out Of my hair". Thank you Will Roger's High School in Tulsa Oklahoma.🎶 Am still singing.

Keep singing!! I love your story. It makes me want to sing too. I was a really good singer, but I never had the opportunity to keep up my voice lessons. I did a few performances... but this story also has a happy ending, because my sons ( now 28 and 30), are both accomplished musicians, actors and dancers. Neither has a contract, but one is close to having one. The contract doesn’t matter- the fact that they can produce beautiful music and soulful dance and art anywhere they are is a gem that lives inside them!! So that’s why I say: please keep singing!

If you have seen the film I am not surprised at your tears, I saw it when it first came out in England, and that scene is the climax of the film, Mitzi Gaynor thought that Rossano Brazzi had died. At the end of the film in the cinema where I saw it, the lights went up immediately when this song ended, and droves people were wiping their eyes and trying to hold back their tears. I know that it`s a well worn cliche "But they don`t make `em like this anymore"

If you read the book, Mitchner called the islanders, Tonkinese. In reality they were Vietnamese and they hated the French. At the time, the French ruled Vietnam. At the time of the play, the Viet Minh had just begun to fight. They wanted their freedom. We lost 58,000 killed, much of our national treasure trying to tell the Vietnamese how to run their lives.

That's not the direct translation. The direct translation would be: Tell me why life is beautiful, Tell me why life is happy, Tell me why, dear madame, Is it because you love me?

Actually instead of dear madame it would be dear unmaried lady
@sonjamorin77149 жыл бұрын
Both are right. The first comment has the English translation to fit with the music. The second comment has the literal translation from the French. So there is, in fact, no need to argue.
@robertamsel47697 жыл бұрын
In English, it would translate as "dear miss," which means "dear unmarried lady," except no one would say that. In modern English, we might instead say "dear ms." instead but back in the 1940's, it was "dear miss." I hope that's not too confusing.

A beautiful ending for Nellie, Emile, and the kids. I especially love how the kids just go on eating as the two adults hold hands; it shows that they are fully accustomed to Nellie and they are already satisfied having her be a part of the family, so her being next to their father just feels right to them, not abnormal at all. This finale also makes me wonder about the future of Liat and Bloody Mary. Liat stood up for herself and refused to marry anyone other than Cable. Did she settle for the other guy her mother wanted her to marry? Was she pregnant with her and Cable’s baby? I feel that the latter is likely, in which case Emile and Nellie certainly helped her and Mary take care of the child in every way they could out of obligation since they both were close with Cable. If Cable’s family were ever to hear of their grandchild - a piece of him that was left - it might set them on the path to overcoming their prejudice.

My mother gave her eight children a love of music. Fifty years ago I worked in a grocery. The other guys my age couldn’t believe that I could sing the words to musak they didn’t even notice. The customers were very amused to hear me singing about washing that man right out of hair. Lol. Gay bashing wasn’t a thing my coworkers would try with me. I’d have bashed them harder. Besides, they knew I was dating a few of the cutest cashiers. Knowing music and singing isn’t gay.

Well said Martin, whatever you are, be PROUD. I am an old man of 85 and when I was younger I was ostracised by many because I had a couple of Gay friends, it hurt, but friends are friends and I had cause to remember those who gave me a hard time. I had a big crisis in my life, and the first ones to stand by me and give unsolicited help were my two Gay friends. Sadly they have both died in the last four years and I miss them like Hell.
