Dont know how good Gr Research matches their drivers, but all their xover parts had hand written values. All had identically measuring matching pairs. To this date I have made 9 of their xovers, they sound and measure beautifully.

JTR & RTJ speakers use I think Baltic Spruce or something like that. Very dense strong wood laninations.
@PoesAcoustics9 ай бұрын
Baltic birch. It’s the same material used in high quality pro boxes. It’s less dense than mdf but it’s void free and much stiffer. Which is good for subs.

Matt, I've read 2 blind listening tests where the Perlisten S7Ts have lost to the Revel Be speakers. I did notice these tests were done in Mono(with only one speaker), do you think it will be the same for stereo or multichannel?
@PoesAcoustics7 ай бұрын
Who did these tests? The only one I knew of was involving a a group that’s known to be biased toward Revel and also the Revel was broken and lost. I didn’t hear of a rematch where it won? Gene has both and feels very strongly the Perlistens sound substantially better. I’ve heard both and didn’t find the differences to be very big. So much so that I would strongly be suspect of any amateur blind testing claims. These are two speaker lines with really good designs. But the Perlistens are very hard to fault technically. Similar smoothness. But the Perlisten has a smoother DI and lower distortion. Horizontal directivity is very similar. Vertical directivity is more controlled in the Perlisten. It’s a much better off-axis response. So why would the Revel sound better?

Excellent video and the best explanation I’ve seen on all of KZbin as to why Perlisten is worth the money. I’d love to see the same breakdown for Perlisten subs or other Dan Roemer designs like Arendal Keep up the great work! Only constructive feedback would be, try to add some photos or videos to make it more than a talking head video. I know, more work, just saying.

No offense friend, i feel like youtubers need to be calling these manufacturers out for their absurd offerings. You are making excuses for them while they rob you blind. When is the audio industry going to get drug out in the street and pummeled? Seriously... audio designs are pretty damn old now, we understand a whole lot more than we did in the 70's even. These manufacturers are putting $500 into a pair of speakers and selling them for $5k... A $5k dollar speaker that is practically junk... They are doing NOBODY any favors...
@PoesAcoustics7 ай бұрын
Because that’s what it costs. Your notion that $500 in materials equals $500 in speakers misunderstands the true cost of product development, sales, and support. It’s not an excuse. It’s a reality.
@jdl12767 ай бұрын
@PoesAcoustics my opinion is different, the industry has turned into a marketing scheme from ripoff artists. Probably been that way for a while but I've just become aware
@jdl12767 ай бұрын
@PoesAcoustics I understand everyone has to make a profit but this is very unbalanced. And to make it worse there is the "review army" propping it up..

@@jdl1276 I don’t know the brands you specially speak of. I have certainly found rip-off brands. There is no denying that some companies add dumb features with little value that allow them to upcharge. But the idea that $500 in parts shouldn’t equal $5000 in product misunderstands how a business works. There is significantly more cost in that product than its parts. It’s not about upping people off. Companies have tried the direct sale route to eliminate the middle man. It’s largely been a poor model. Many of those companies never turn enough profit to be a good business and the owners often close the company down when they can’t afford to do it anymore. Some of my favorite direct sales companies turned out to be losing money on every speaker they sold when they finally closed. Others had so little margin that when events like COVID impacted the manufacturing world, they lost money. I’ve seen small companies go belly up because of one bad parts supplier, a quality issue in an amp, etc. All of this stems from a desire to operate to an unhealthy level of lean. There are some aspects of the industry that create some financial inefficiencies. But these are arguably necessary. Small companies can’t afford to self-distribute. They can’t train their dealers on the product or even keep up with all the dealers. So these middle man regional distributors take that load off the manufacturer so they can focus on product development and production. I really think many misunderstand what it costs to bring a speaker to market. It really so quite expensive. Those who skip to the front of the line often bring a mediocre or even simply a terrible product to market. The best speakers have custom engineered drivers. Which means custom tooling. It also means tons of computer modeling time and lots of real world testing of many prototypes. One company told me that when they introduced a new special version of their top speaker, they went through over a dozen prototypes. Those prototypes all become a sunk cost. Most companies can’t do the sophisticated modeling themselves, meaning they outsource Comsol modeling which has a high cost. That can be tens of thousands of dollars. Bringing it in house means bringing an engineer that likely requires a six figure salary. A lot of companies are smaller than people realize. Paying them a reasonable salary (and many of these guys make far less than you probably think), covering their benefits, taxes, etc. and then amortizing this across all the products sold, means selling a lot of those products or selling each for more. But you can always lower the price and sell for less. Often those overhead costs are fixed as are production costs. Selling more means making more and these smaller companies often simply could not make more even if they wanted to. At some point the increased production means a massive investment in the factory to enlarge it. And that now increases overhead costs again. So decisions need to be made. Most of these smaller higher end companies choose to keep production levels modest to avoid over expansion and becoming too large to work for their needs.

@@PoesAcoustics i guess i am offended because i have been on the path to finding the best sound i can afford only to find out that everything i can afford sums up to being a grilled cheese sandwich, ha... Along the way i have enjoyed the gear I have purchased but when you find out how cheesy it is, it's very disappointing. I guess i am a new DIY guy from here on out. I don't know what else to say, i can't spend any more money on this cheese.

U r knowledgeable and not a cartoon character. Crazy how less bracing, thinner cabinets etc. Is talked about with 30000 dollar speakers. Im so glad i got into speaker building and design lately. If you enjoy building and hifi and are good at details then diy is such a funner way to go. I still think people really underestimate how simple speakers are. Im not saying its easy but those veneers and fancy angles on speakers make them look intimidating but the guts are always pretty simple and simalar. I know people say you dont really save money on diy but the components in ur speakers will be way better. Im good with that as the components are the only thing i want to spend $ on other than the wood. So much wasted money on those fancy finishes and enclosures. Why doesnt some dude with a rotohammer make speaker out of a boulder he finds and charge 1000000 for it. I bet someone will and i bet someone will buy it. Thats just not for me. Im trying to make the best sound for the lowest cost, nothing else.
