Wierd question, but would it be possible to get your raw data for the tests? I currently dive with scuba pro nova and supernova fins but I'm considering looking in to split fins because I use a lot of air. I would like to see how split fins compare to what I'm using before I drop any money for another pair. Thanks!

Hello, great video! Thank you for your effort. There is just a small issue with how you have identified one on the fins. The “ScubaPro GO Sport fins” you reviewed are actually the “ScubaPro GO Travel”. The GO Sport is intended to be used with boots whilst the Go Travel is a barefoot design.

Nice work. My impression is that optimized fins, especially split fins, are constructed for for a pretty narrow window of performance and limited kick style in order to optimize the efficient ratio for a certain amount of energy with the less toll on your muscles. My experience is that these optimized fins often fails in cases you need a higher amount of propulsion energy, such as heavy equipment with more drag (dry suit, double set, stages bottle), strong current, heavy wave, towing a diver or plain panic mode. Would have been interesting to have a pull or push test how much force you can propel before the fins fails and loose its structure (e.g. swim against a load cell or tow line with loading cell). Or just simply compare the experience between an easy setup with a setup with high drag (e.g. towing a fellow diver).
@DIVEindotcomАй бұрын
That's a great idea, and I completely agree it would have given so much great data. We'll add this for our next test. Thanks for commenting!

I do agree with you around the split fins. I do have a pair though and do like them. I do like drift diving. And am getting into photography a little more. I do struggle with the current and my kick rate goes up. I’m going to out myself here and say I am a slower, more relaxed diver and prefer less currents. I prefer the boat to come and get me rather than swim 100 metres back to the boat. I am looking around for another set of fins that can help on those dives that the current is up or I need to kick back to the boat. I don’t think there is any harm in having specific types of fins for specific types of divers/ dives. I’m definitely not a technical diver or a cave diver and would be uncomfortable and incompetent with something that would require me to be mo ile in smaller spaces.

Really good analysis! To add a little detail to the RK3s, the regular fins are effectively neutral, but when you're tuning your trim the HDs with their higher density are noticeably heavier and less buoyant. Per pair the HDs are about 0.3kg/0.6lb negative for Medium, going up to 0.4kg/0.8lb negative for Super.

Great video - thanks. I have a pair of Mares Avanti Plus for travel and Atomic split fins for my regular diving here in NZ. Mares are just perfect for cruisy, warm water diving. Re the Atomic - I’ve seen some online feedback that suggests these are over-rated/difficult to manoeuvre. My personal experience (after over 100 dives with them) - they are just fine in terms of frog kicking, back finning and general slow speed manoeuvrability. You just need a little patience, given that fluidity in the centre of the fin. Patience and deliberate motion is a good thing when it comes to diving! Where they really excel is at the end of a dive. When you surface in turbulent seas, possibly with some current, the Atomic split fins are absolute weapons. Even with a gentle flutter kick you will find yourself back at the boat well before everyone else. Obviously, it’s not a race/who cares who gets there first. But when your enegery might be low, it’s a real positive. I couldn’t recommend them more. 🙌🏻

You earned a new sub with this video. Nicely done. Really appreciate your positive attitude about all of the fins finding good and bad in everything and not just bashing the ones you didn't like...way too many content creators who think it's cool to just bash products (especially brands) they don't like, huge turn off. You let the product speak for itself, undaunted by what others think or say. Loved it.

@@jacobclark89I’ve got a pair of split fins. And have noticed something similar. I have arthritis in my knees (old injury and rheumatoid arthritis). I noticed that drift dives, sheltered dives and dives with little rip or tidal resistance they work great. I have little joint pain. They allow me to dive up to 50 ish minutes, 2 dives over 2 too 3 days with a night dive. I don’t feel much on my knees after this. Yes I have not gone hard or fast. I find kicking on my back to be ok with them. Better than some fins I’ve used not as good as others. But yeah if you have a lot of distance to cover, are going against currents or your natural pace is fast then it is a bit tough in these fins. A bit of a disclaimer about my diving. I’m love just to watch. I could happily drift around for 30 min. I hate having to chase someone and not getting a chance to see anything. I’ve had a couple of buddies who were very much distance divers. They had to go the furthest and be the quickest. I don’t think it mattered much which fins I wore (I changed them twice) and stopped.

That is the best question ever. For any fin, it depends on your finning style and your needs. If you're traveling a lot then pick the Aqualung Storm fins voted Best for Travel. We found that the Dive Rite XT fins work best for Frog Kick so if that's your go-to kick style, then these are the ones to pick. If you're looking for heavy fins then pick the Zeagle Recon fins rated Best Paddle-Style fins. We rated the ScubaPro Jet Fins as the Best All-Around fins, so that would be a good pick for a fin that does it all really well.
