Answer to the surgeon sleep question: we do have 2 teams for extremely long sugeries...but yeah, we do not sleep 7-9 hours ever, sometimes we have a few 30 minutes during the day to get some shut eye, but we dont even work a regular 9to5 so our sleep schedule can be 3 hours one night and 8 the next

Actually from what i know, hours long surgeries like 10-12 hrs(specially brain/heart surgeries), there’s a medical team assigned to it. Not only one attending physician but there are also 2 or more surgeons that assist the attending physician throughout the surgery. So if the attending physician needs to take a break, there’s another surgeon that will take his place on stand by. Hours long surgery like this are being studied and planned by the medical team before they schedule the operation. So they are all briefed on how the operation will flow and when will the exchange/breaks of the surgeons be. If one attending physician is not enough (because of longer operating hours), usually there’s an assisting surgeon who’s also watching the operation, and ready to take over when its time to do so.

I feel like physicians are trained to be sleep-deprived. Haha. The process of being a physician requires a lot of sacrifices for sleep. 7-9hrs of sleep is not quite possible. Medstudents have to sacrifice their sleep to study and prepare for upcoming examinations, case presentations and small group discussions. Then during their 4thyr/junior internship (where medstudents do the most physically, sometimes mentally and emotionally, exhausting jobs in the hospital), they go on duties for literally 36hrs straight almost every other day for an entire year (3day cycle of "pre-duty-from" --- day1: "pre-duty" for 8hrs, day2: "duty" for 24hrs, continued with 8hrs "from-duty" in day3, then repeat for 365days). After junior internship, there is another 1yr of internship (post-graduate), then board exam. Licensed general physicians who will want to specialize (surgery, pediatrics, internal medicine etc) will undergo residency training program with the "pre-duty-from" status. Depending on their chosen specialization, it will take about 3-5yrs. That's how it goes....

I've worked in the nursing field for 12+ yrs. I developed how to work well with only 4 hrs of sleep. Doctors learn doing this habit during undergrad / intern days. so while they're in surgery time flys while their concentrating on the plan on hand.

So I am not a surgeon but I do work in surgeries. Plenty of the staff do get relief for lunch, etc. The surgeons and surgical PAs generally do not. The longest surgery I have been a part of was a little over 12 hours. They did not go to the bathroom, drink or eat the whole time. I honestly don’t know how they do it.

Lack of sleep is a productivity nightmare in my case, because my brain basically stops functioning if I don't get enough sleep. I need at least 6 hours of sleep to function and 8 hours to function properly. Pretty much every single mental and physical issue I have kind of just goes away if I get enough sleep.

well, the truth is during those 24/48hr surgeries the doctors have a little like 2-3 hr sleeps in between where the 2nd surgeon (assisting surgeon) takes over during the minor procedures like just sewing up a minor artery or cleaning the area the suction etc. So the doctor stays sane! and similarly, the assisting surgeon gets to sleep for 2-3 hrs too!

I have a good excuse to be up late: I'm a doctor on a night shift. Just wanna say: if there is a planned surgery, especially ones that start during the day hours, there WILL be different surgical teams backing up or taking over a procedure. Sometimes a day shift team will take over from a night shift team or vice versa. Nurses and assistants get switched regularly. As for the surgeons... They're stubborn so they might insist on finishing a procedure themselves. It;s not an obligatory thing. Also, the thing us doctors ended up doing the most working extra hours is administration, administration, administration...

I thought the Japanese had the least amount of sleep in the world but they’re more productive than the USA. I guess there’s other factors involved than just lack of sleep.
