When the age gap is more than 10 years, siblings grow up like only child and not like siblings. So it's harder to build these siblings bond between each other.
@its1996Me
@its1996Me 3 жыл бұрын
The age gap between my younger brother and me is 10 years, so it's partly true. I was growing up like an only child and it was harder for me to make this bond, because I had the responsibility to take care of him sometimes, but once he could take care of himself and started to become an individual with his own character traits, interests and stuff and I didn't have that parent-like responsibility, we managed to bond like brother and sister. He's a teen now and I'm a young adult. He resembles me in a lot of traits and we still have a lot of stuff we can talk about. Also, I'm lucky he's not shy of showing his affection like other teenagers, so we get along very well, much better than when he was an annoying toddler lol. So what I wanted to say is that it takes time, but it's still sooo worth it.

@@its1996Me i guess it's important to be open to eachother. I've a sister who is 12 years older then me but we have a great relationship. But the relationship between my older sister is completely different to my younger siblings and we have 2 years between. But I think that's pretty normal. I don't play around with my older sister and I'm not so involved in her life like I am with my younger ones but I still like our relationship and learn a lot from it. (Sorry for my English ^^)

My brother and I are 10 years apart too!! He's turning 16 this month and I've always felt like the third parent growing up. Tbh I was the built in baby sitter...I've always tried to look out for him, share my food etc. It was hard to connect with him when he was in middle school but now he's in high school and it's been a lot easier to have conversations with him. We've definitely had our challenges but I'm glad he and I get along well. And it's cool to hear what his generation is into v the 90s gen (the best generation cough cough)

I kind of agree with Jae about sibling age gaps, especially if they are given some type of parental responsibility. I feel like it was good because my parents had another person to rely on and help raise their child, but I also think it added some strain to the relationship with my sister. Basically they made me be a parent type of figure and they got to be almost like a fun grandparent type of figure. I think bad communication between my parents and I also made the relationship worse. It's overall not bad, but it would have been nice to just be able to be the fun older sister and not have to be the responsible one. But there were points in time where I was the person my sister was closest to, so I guess there are some positives too

I only have an older brother and our parents don't give a sheesh about age order. I wasn't the pampered baby sibling and my brother wasn't the overly praised eldest. If one of us got in trouble, we ALL get in trouble. And we either shared stuff or didn't get anything at all. I think that helped us bond closer.

As an older sibling I understand it must hard for the youngest to have a third parent but believe me we didn't want that either like we wanted to be kids too but most of us didn't have a choice, some people don't understand the pressure on oldest kids and how we try so hard to help the youngest to be happier than us by not doing the mistakes we did. I don't blame Jae for feeling that (it's totally valid) but I feel like a lot of younger siblings don't appreciate their older sibling enough and the sacrifice a lot of them do for the youngest. It's also true that a huge age gap is hard to deal with (I'm 9 and 12 years older than my siblings) because it's not the same generation at all and it's hard to relate to them sometimes but as older kids we also have to make efforts to share their interests and actually try to interact with them more (by asking about their music taste, their movies and series etc.). I don't feel like I'm not close with them, we spend a lot of time together and do a lot of stuff but it's 50/50, everyone has to make a effort to close the age gap, it's obviously easier for siblings who are around the same age.

Yes! I am definitely the emotional support eldest daughter aka third parent and parents' bff. My brother and I are only two years apart, but especially in recent years I have had to step up and be a parental figure. It's not exactly something you want to do but you do it to help your family even though it can really take a toll on you. So, let's appreciate older sisters a little more, and, everyone, be kind to your siblings.

Completely agree. It was hard, I'm a little over a decade older than my sister. I was pretty much close to a third parent. I think it added a lot of stress and a lot of sacrifice. I basically gave up on going to certain colleges I wanted to go to because it was too far away and I felt like my parents and sister needed my help. When she was younger, we were inseparable. But now I think she resents me because like Jae said lol it's like having three narcs. She was surprisingly more understanding when she was younger and now our relationship is more strained. I'm hoping with work and time it will improve.

@@Lalalalala... I really hope your relationship improve, it was really hard when they were teenagers, my sister is really thankful now but it was hard for her to accept me as a "third" parent when she was like 12-13. I think it take both side to have a good relationship and as the oldest we also to have to try to act less as parents when they're older and that's the hard part. But with time and efforts if you genuinely love each other your relationship will be fine :)

To be honest, I feel like it really depends on the older sibling's personnality and how their parents influenced them. I have an older brother who is 14 older than me, yes it does sometimes feel like I have a second dad, but he really managed to seattle a good sibling dynamic between us and kept his "child-like" personnality to have a certain balance.

This episode got me realizing that if my younger sis was not a female I don't think we would be as close as we are. I got 2 older bros and my sis is 8 years younger than me. I, being the older sis, was the only one that helped raise her. Now that she's in her teens she relies on me for advice, and its surprising considering how much I parent her honestly. But because our mom has a more conservative view of females my sister confides in me more easily.

I tend to lean towards the latter, we tell eachother everything, we trust eachother so much we don't remember the last time we sabotaged, if we ever did. But I think I definitely have an impact on him and vice versa, we learn alot from eachother and bond over the same interests

as an older sister (2 year age gap), i can say that there is a weird motherly/controlling instinct when it comes to our younger sibling(s). my bro has always gotten mad at me that i act too much like a third parent but i feel like there are reasons for that: -as eldest daughters there is a lot of pressure on us to be the "ideal" child so we want our younger siblings to follow our steps to "survive" the real world -because we have been controlled by others as an only child for some time, it gives us satisfaction to control our juniors -a mix of both i think as you grow up, though, you learn that you're sibling can survive on their own so it balances out and the relationship naturally improves

Now, I just want to say I'm a fraternal twin. Since we're essentially siblings born at/near the same time, it's been very interesting. We get along really well. You interact with the same people, maybe the same group of friends (we might have a separate group for our different interests but for those same interests, it's the same group). We are the oldest with a younger sister with about a 4 year gap. Now that gap, that gap is borderline close. We can relate, but at the same time not so much. You graduate as she goes through orientation, and we don't always see eye to eye. It's just interesting....

Unlike most people who can relate to Jae, I'm more similar to Alexa. I didn't realize how similar I am to Alexa until now. I'm 3 years older than my brother and my family/parent dynamic is similar to Alexa's I guess. Even though my brother and I fight almost all the time, we are really close. And what's funny, Alexa and I have a similar relationship with our parents, if not exact. I would go to my dad more often if it was stuff that involved money or school (specifically college), while my was there for performances and there to pretty much spill the tea with. My personality and interest are more like my dad than my mom. I also think our friends age range is similar to mines. I don't have too many close friends, but some of them are either my age (2002) and range all the way to probably 2005/2006. If you are wondering why I have that young of friends, it's because ever since elementary school I volunteered at my elementary school and still do so I got pretty close to a whole lot of people younger than me. On another note, I actually learned more about this than I have in college.

I'm the second of 4 siblings, we are 3 older sisters (2 years apart from one another) and a younger brother (7 years younger). Between us sisters we've always fought A LOT, we really didn't share much, especially feelings, until my younger sister suffered a long period of depression some years ago, and I myself started suffering anxiety, and we all put ourself in discussion as a family. Now we're much more united and open with emotions, and I'm really connected to my brother, I sort of feel as both a sister and a mother for him, and he also gives me strenght and often calms me down (without him knowing). He's a really kind child, not sure how he grew up so well with all these issues in our house, but it's true that in my family we're, yes, problematic, but also good people at the end of the day.

After I started university, our relationship changed for the better, and it became easier for us to have conversations. I guess when we were younger, the age gap is very apparent. But now that we’re older, we’re in similar life stages and we have a better understanding of each other. He still gets on my nerves sometimes but I wouldn’t trade him for anyone else 😆

I am 10 years older than my brother so I can relate to being a third mom. When he was a baby I had to look after him and help mom. However now he is 10 yo so I am 20 and I already feel like I shouldn't be a "snitch" or push him. Even though maternal instinct doesn't let me go yet I really want to be more like a guide and friend to brother. So he can trust me, rely on me as on a cool sister. Honestly, it's hard to achieve but this is my dream since I love him c:

I have five siblings(including my foster sister) and the three oldest ones and I have that big family kind of relationship where the weak don’t survive and we blackmail each other with secrets.... BUT for the two youngest ones, I’m almost 7 years older than one and 10 years older than the other so for them, I’m kind of like a vodka aunt to them because I show up every once in a while and take them to amusement parks and the aquarium and museums and stuff

Well I think I can relate to Jae's older sister. Me and my sister are 12 years age gap dan it is really hard to keep up with her as a sibling. When she was 5 I still took care of her with a mother behavior but I attend to her school, I felt so uncomfortable to be seen as a "mother" since I was in my teenage. My parents always busy so I had no choice. Lately I have tried to act more "childlish" in front of her so she could understand that I am not a mother figure but as a sibling. Well she is 8 now and I'm 20 this year.

i actually kinda relate to jae somehow because me and my sister are like 15 years apart and like jae said our generations are so apart we view things differently,,, like for example we went out last week and then she saw this girl wearing pants and then like a cropped shirt i think abd then she said "don't wear clothes like that or else you'll get catcalled" and i was really surprised that she still think that what we women wear is the reason why we get catcalled

The opening is great. Alexa is smiling and so does Jae. Idk iF Alexa is not around, Jae hasn't been the same as the earlier episodes. He seems so... unexcited anymore. What's wrong with you Jae. Wanna talk about it? If Jae is 30,imagine he become uncle if his sister had kids Anyway, as for me, I do talk alot with my mom abt almost everything,but hard to communicate well with my dad. He always busy working. I had 2 sisters who are 2 and 4 years apart and I also have brother who is 2 years younger than me. I close with my second sister and my little brother but feels distant apart with my older sister, even though we only 4 years gap. I don't know why. Maybe because we have nothing in common.

i’m the oldest of three (i’m 20) and have 2 younger brothers (14 and 4) and only recently i started getting more along with the middle one, we have some similar interest and views on the world, however i’m so scared that my relationship with the younger one will be awkward and “motherly” as when he will be in his teens i’m gonna be 30. also the fact that i’m a female automatically makes me a designated nanny when parents need some help with the youngest which happens a lot (whether i like it or not). after experiencing parenting with my brothers i DEFINITELY DONT WANT MY OWN KIDS 😭

as the youngest of four (3 brothers with a 10+ yr age gap) i can say that I thinkmy relationship with them has gotten more intimate as I've gotten older. as a kid I was a burden they had to drag around, but now that I'm more mature, I can relate to them a bit more and we can have more intelligent and meaningful conversations. i can also say that the majority of my interests were shaped by my brothers, so that's definitely true. also, the thing abt guys being more distant is true I think. if I need to talk to someone, I would probably prefer to talk to my brothers wife than my actual brother.

I have five fully siblings and I am the baby of the family. With my two older brothers I have age gap of 21 years and 19 years they even have children that are the same age with me. So they treat me as their own kids but with my 3 sisters age gap 15,10 and 5 year I have a really healthy sibling relationship. I can talk everything with them even with the wide age gap. I am even closest with my sister that is 15 years older, so I don't think age matters if you click mentally with each other you can develop a healthy relationship with each other.

I'm the oldest of 5 siblings, my oldest sister is 4 years younger than my and my youngest is 11 years younger than me. I wouldn't say that I have that much trouble with connecting to any of them even though we don't have that much in common. I was always more of a tomboyish type of girl when growning up and my sisters where more girly. I've more in common with my brothers. He also likes games and Animes and Mangas. But we all always got along quite good. I mean there were fights, but we made up quickly. We are all "adults" now. I moved away and we don't talk much and only see each other like 3 - 4 times a year but when we do, it always feels like home and family. I think having sibling has tought me many things e.g. patience, not getting everything I want, sharing, compassion and many more. My boyfriend of 10 years is an only child and sometimes you can really feel it. It's just different.

I wonder if I would be open up to my dad or not grown up cause he left for good when I was 19 and at that age, I was still an unstable teenager. Well, maybe or maybe not. Glad I still have my mom when I was at college. I used to rely on my younger brother a lot and not to my older brother (cause we've never been close) , but now as he's got married and leaving me with my mom, our relationship is drifting apart. The weird thing is I could really see how my brother changes once they have their own family now. My older brother who's never seemed to care turns out care the most when my mom got stroke attatcks and made her lost his walking ability as I am the one who's taking care of her alone at home and on the other hand my younger brother who's always been my mom's favorite and used to be 'my friend' seem couldn't care less. I guess that's a natural phase every person with siblings must've gotten through, whether it strenghens the bond or the other way around..

I kind of relate to both of them because I'm the youngest of 6 and the difference between me and my oldest sibling is like 21 years, so I was growing up with my nieces and nephews as like their older sister as well as having only two siblings actually living at home to play with every day and go to school with.

My brother and I have 9 years age gap. I'm 21 and he's 12 now but I still feel like we're really close? He literally copy almost everything I do and does things I like like games (league, valorant, etc.) I feel like he's my carbon copy. We fight a lot when we were kids because I was not mature enough back then but now I can definitely say we've become closer and I had developed a more 'parent-like' affection for him.

I have two older siblings, a sister who's 6 years older than me and a brother who's 1 and a half years (?) older than me. If i'm being honest, i'm closer to my sister than my brother or even than both of my parents. I started to get close to her when i reach the age of 11, we started to have similarities in interest (like music) and most of the movies and tv shows i've watched are influenced by her. Normally, people with that age gap probably talk to each other formally, but to me, she's kind of my best friend, she's the only person in the world who knows me fully. We talk like we're bffs, rather than actualy older-younger siblings type of relationship. I guess you can describe my relationship with my sister as sort of sharing and keeping secrets with each other, I trust her and she trusts me. I am more comfortable oversharing with her than with my parents because i've seen and heard their principles and opinion in lifes and issues, so that kind of made me doubt if i'll ever have the type of relationship with my parents as sharing-keeping of secrets. But as for my sister, the reason why i trust her the most, is because even before I tell her that i'm bi, she had already accepted me fully. Even if i don't say a word, her arms are already wide open and ready to hug me. We don't say i love you's to each other often, verbally and openly, but i always made sure that she's really important to me. If i'm being honest, as cheesy as it gets, i don't think i get to survive in this world without her.

my brother is 3 1/2 years older than me. we were really close in the beginning but at some point having a little sister around all the time became uncool. I really wanted to be like him when I was little so it shaped me a lot on how I acted. Now that we are older we honestly don't talk that much but we always support each other and I know I have always someone to lean on, It's like an unspoken understanding.
