god the point Ashley was making about everyone wearing the same stuff is so true. it's super irritating when people call their faves a "fashionista" or "fashion icon" just because they look good in their outfits. most of the outfits are literally just what ashley described, that long coat, t shirt/button up, nice pants and dress shoes. literally anyone can look good in that outfit, especially if they have good proportions and they're already good looking like most korean celebs. a fashion icon is someone who dresses differently from other people and has the confidence to experiment with outfits that no one else is wearing. they set trends for other people to follow and they're not afraid to look "weird" because they would rather look "weird" and different than everyone else than just look good in an outfit that everyone else is wearing.

It’s really annoying when someone gets called a fashion icon when they’ve got good proportions and are skinny but if someone wears the same outfit and is bigger they don’t get the same praise Also I think an example of a fashion icon would be Chaeyoung from Twice because she isn’t afraid to experiment with her fashion and wears different outfits to others

@Squad2SoiFon4 жыл бұрын
I think growing up in America really helped out these guys' mental health/self esteem during that critical period of teen-young adult years. I know in many Asian countries, including Korea, the beauty standards are imposed at such a young age, around the pre-teen years, and things like weight, complexion and facial features are discussed about kids whether they like it or not. It must be so much worse for young idol trainees that have to meet the high standards successful idols have already set, it can take a serious toll on a person's mental health and self esteem. Growing up outside of that pressure in a country (and an age) where beauty is less constricted for the larger parts of 'growing up' years can be much healthier. That's probably not as relevant with this current generation (seriously, the pressures of social media, especially tiktok, on kids is crazy)
@Frau_Zett4 жыл бұрын
That was such a good comment, I 100% agree. A bit of peer pressure to look good would be normal in any society, however South Korea is taking it to the next level which is basically "lookism". Being so overly competetive in literally every aspect of life (education, income, appearance etc) is extremely detrimental to a person's mental health, because it's a simple fact that not everybody can achieve the same things in life no matter how hard they try. Some people aren't born that pretty, some people aren't born that smart, and that's perfectly fine. They should be supported and feel valued for who they are and what they are able to achieve, not shamed for who they can't be. I wasn't surprised to learn SK has the second highest suicide rate among OECD countries, this is a homemade problem.

As an Asian American male, I think my self-confidence would have been higher if I grew up in Asia. A lot of people told me growing up that Asian men are not very attractive or that they look all the same. No one really complimented my looks until I went to a college where it was majority Asian.
@christopherherr75613 жыл бұрын
@@jasonpham8554 so I guess there's good and bad no matter where you go. It is what it is though. I totally feel you, though. It used to bug me when I was younger when I was made to feel lesser than what I was just because I was Asian. But once you grab a good hold of your individuality, those kinds of things don't seem to matter as much anymore. I mean the media does have a certain portrayal of us Asians but as long as you learn to love yourself, you can just say "fuck em"
@kerryholland4822 Жыл бұрын
@@jasonpham8554I think people will find a reason to make you feel insecure, it's a power play. I'm a white, blue eye girl and live in England- so in theory I should fit in. But I was heavily bullied about my appearance that I ended up having such low self esteem that I became anorexic. Industries like the fitness, diet and beauty make money from our insecurities, white patriarchy, raises us to make us feel insecure about things like race and gender. There is obviously nothing wrong with being an Asian guy, but they don't want you to know your beauty and power because you can't they can't control people who truly know their worth and they can't make money off you

I COMPLETELY agree with Ashley!! Even for me, being American, as soon as I started absorbing South Korean culture online, I've become so much more self conscious than ever about the TINIEST things that don't matter in the states. And that's just from consuming South Korean media for over 10 years of my life! What's even crazier is that MY KNEES were one of the things I became insecure about, too!!! I heard someone say it on a show and I realized I had "ugly knees" too. I also recently become insecure about my neckline! @nikolaiquack85483 жыл бұрын
@@colonthree9874 It's still not a 100% clear where any fetish comes from. Most scientists think that they are not hereditary, BUT from my personal experience, and I've talked about this with a bunch of other people who got a kink or fetish, I've had that thing since early childhood, so much so that I don't remember ever not having it. Btw, feet are more like a kink for me, rather then a fetish. There is a fine line between the two, but a fetish is something that's absolutely necessary for you to get off. Anyway, my main kink so to speak is actually tickling, haha. Feet are more like a combo thing with that for me. Btw, some people have argued that, because the parts of the brain responsible for feet and some sexual stuff are close to each other, sometimes neuron connections can be built that weren't supposed to be there. So that might have something to do with the reason why the foot fetish is one of the most common ones.

That's you RESPECTING YOURSELF, but we should still dress up when we're meeting other people/new people, cause that's one way of showing that we respect them, that's US RESPECTING OTHERS. He asked me to think bout it, "don't you feel good when you found out that s/he dressed up nicely just to meet you?" He also said, "it's a different story when you're with closer friend, when s/he tone down that means s/he finds you comfortable, and that's an awesome thing to happen too." So yea, all in all.. It made me think that every look is okay.. Every style is okay.. Agreed, it also really weirds me out how anybody who doesn't fit these set standards to the T (like small face, double eyelids, pale skin yadda yadda) is automatically considered "ugly", like there is zero room for variety. Ironically I have always been drawn to the idols that were considered "ugly" because they captured my eye amongst all the polished uniformity that is going on in Kpop. It was also usual to see someone fresh from plastic surgery. I remember thinking I'll never live there, I'll only visit for vacation but not to live permanently. My mental health is not strong enough for their standards. It must be exhausting to always try and be on trend there, not to mention expensive

I’ve read stories about idols talking about the pressure to live up to crazy beauty standards set by the industry, but this is nuts. Hearing Ashely and Peniel flat out say their agencies criticized their looks to the point of encouraging them to get risky plastic surgery is disgusting. Shaving down your face is not a minor procedure. And criticizing how your neck or knees look... what the hell is wrong with these agencies 😤 These trainees are young impressionable kids having to deal with all this unnecessary criticism and pressure to be perfect just to fulfill their dreams. I’m glad Ashley and Peniel had enough strength and courage to stand up for themselves and say no.

And if they did get them done they would be criticized by ppl that they aren’t natural beauty
@me99814 жыл бұрын
Did you ever wonder why most of the trainees are always REALLY young? That's because they are young and impressionable and people in companies can literally mold them however they want to - phisically and mentaly.

me Yes it’s sad that entertainment industries take advantage of young aspiring talent. Also, Pop & K Pop is primarily marketed to and consumed by a young audience - teenagers and young adults. These labels want young stars so they appeal to their demographic. The lifespan of Pop stars or entertainers in general is sadly short lived.

Korean beauty standards are insane, I feel bad when idols get uncomfortable under cameras just because they're not wearing make up For me the important thing is people to be clean and smell good, and have like a good style, showing that you take care of yourself and your appearance is enough for me, like you don't have to be handsome, you can be attractive if you are clean and have a sense of style (which doesn't require expensive clothes)

I started watching podcasts for Matthew and ended up loving Peniel and Ashley. I love their personalities and how they complement each other. Matthew is sincere but without hurting others, he says what he thinks without caring about being judged, I discovered that he is a big boy with a sweet personality and that he can fall madly in love with someone. He prefers a person who follows his own style over someone who follows appearances (like Peniel) he is the type of person who tries to integrate and make everyone feel comfortable and is somewhat shy but when he comes into confidence he is super joker. And what I love is that he is a great person who tries to help EVERYONE. Peniel is the best friend that every woman wants, he is great to tell her your secrets because he knows how to keep them, he is very nice, he tries to follow his own rules and he does not care about the appearance of others, for him personality is more important. It is very sincere. He is a person who would ask you for advice. I always discover new things about him and I like them more. He is the type of person who would help a stranger and if someone had a bad day, they would come to make you smile. He seems to have a calm personality but he always radiates joy to those around him and does not like to tell his problems to others and prefers to be in a good mood. Ashley is the sweet girl who likes to make everyone feel comfortable, she would be the cutest little sister. She is very respectful and tries to see the positive in people, she is faithful. she takes care of her friends. And it would be great to do girls' night with her. She’s a beautiful girl, but she doesn’t flaunt it. She’s the shy girl who loves her friends and seems to always try to be with her friends when they need her. She doesn’t know how great she is. I hope no one turns off the smile she has and don’t forget that she’s perfect just the way she is, she doesn’t need to adjust to what others think. The three of them have different but similar personalities at the same time, I love that they seem not to be influenced by being famous. It seems that being famous does not make them think that others are better, they are humble boys with whom you could sit and talk without noticing that they are idols. I hope you don't change, guys. I love your podcasts, your advice and knowing more about your way of thinking that makes me realize that you and I are no different. I think you are the perfect friends because you are not interested in the race, religion, country or appearance of other people, the only important thing is personality and that is great because there are more people like you in the world.

I'm completely to opposite of the Korean Beauty standards. I don't have good skin, I have bad acne and not just on my face. I have scars on my face. I don't really have straight teeth and I'm no skinny. I don't really like skinny clothes and rather wear sweatpants and sports clothes. But I don't have a problem with that at all. That's who I am and I like myself that way.

Can you talk about how being an idol might have changed the things you do for fun? Like is listening to music now boring since you have to listen to so much of it for work? And has the lack of privacy as an idol also affected what you do for fun? Like public parks? Are things like shopping done primarily online or in person?

I've only gone on two long holidays to Korea and even during that short time I noticed everyone following the same trend. And even as a tourist, I felt the pressure to look good which is insane. I normally don't even wear make up on a daily basis but in Seoul, I somehow felt like I had to. And the pressure for girls to be a size S shocked me

I would say the beauty standards in Korea is ridiculous. It really makes you feel insecure. When a celebrity weight more than 50kg, it's embarassing for them. It's different than western entertainment industry, where celebrities try to be fit not skinny.

When I think of beauty the first thing i think about aren't looks, I think of people's personality because you can be good looking and have a horrible personality (expl:homophobic ppl, manipulative ppl, rude/disrespectful ppl ect. And that's very hideous and disgusting) so the way I look at it is if someone who is "dirty or unattractive or weird looking" is a good person, has a great personality just the way they carry themselfs, that's what I consider beautiful or having beauty because it's something that is precious and has value

The more I delved in to the KPOP world and started to watch K-dramas as well, I started to realize how insanely toxic the beauty standards are in Korea. But don't get me wrong, there are toxic beauty standards everywhere, but Korea is on a whole 'nother level. I remember watching a korean show and a woman was talking about how she wanted her baby to be 'lightskin' because she herself as a Korean woman has "dark skin????" and as woman who literally is considered dark skin, it annoyed me so much because that type of thinking was completely colorist. I'm still shook she was so confident saying that

Taylor Swift once wrote in a song, "Handsome, you're a mansion with a view." It's one of my favorite lines by her. Mansions are known for their breathtaking interior, from furniture to decor to fabrics to paintings to architecture. Not only that, the person she's describing has a breathtaking interior AND has a gorgeous view. Beautiful inside and out. And I just thought of it now when BM what's talking about beautiful inside and out. For me, someone's external appearance doesn't go far. Like, yeah she's a beautiful woman or he's a handosme man, but that's it. It's just that. But when I get to know that person well, that's when I'm truly either blown away by them or I'm running away from them 😂😂 I think we all have those people in our lives that have the most beautiful personalities and are charming and charismatic and kind and loving, but aren't the most visually striking, you know? I truly believe what's on the inside matters 10x more. Because what will a beautiful face be of use if you have an ugly hateful heart?

it's funny because i'm a uni student and all of my friends has good fashion sense, some spend hours in the morning putting makeup and getting ready. I don't get it but I accept it. And I'm the lazy person who randomly puts loose short sleeves and knee long shorts on the top of the pile three minutes before going to school with a bare face. I've been told by others about the way I dress but I'm totally okay with how I dress. But I like to think I own the way I dress (and look) :) So i totally agree, beauty is a mindset.

kpop fans usually act high and mighty when it comes to looks. they might comment how they dislike body shaming but they do it all the time to idols. I would see some girls say how some male idols are too skinny or feminine. But same time they will say they don't like guys who "do steroids" like Wonho or someone of bulkier/muscular physique. A perfect example of how we all have our preference or idea what is attractive or beautiful to us... but there's no reason to use such degrading words to make your point.
