At this point I think different state police organizations should keep civilian Forensic Diving Squads on retainer to help search bodies of water. You guys are an inspiration.

Alot do but not all areas have any sort of divers at all, even recreational. So alot of the time local law enforcement agencies rely on FBI resources like their dive teams but any chance to deputize divers and assure their help should definitely be taken.

This was so incredibly well-deserved! It's been a beautiful thing watching recovery channels over the last five or six years from the beginning when many law enforcement agencies didn't know about the efforts you folks put forth, and did not always treat you with a warm welcoming attitude. Such a beautiful honor! I hope more police departments will follow suit by deputizing dedicated volunteer divers and those with other special skills. The ability to freely dive as you see fit in Jefferson County bodies of water and officially assist in cold cases removes so many barriers and worries as to whether a PD will give you a warm welcome (as has happened to volunteer divers on very rare occasions). It’s also nice to feel appreciated for your work. You guys don’t ever expect anything because you do this to bring families closure, but it sure is nice to see a department that stands behind you enough to deputize you. Thanks Jefferson County, OH police department!

I imagine that being Deputized resolves a lot of liability issues. This should happen more often. Back in the early 1960's, my Volunteer Fire Dept. had a water rescue, where it was reported that a child was lost in a body of water. A civilian diver arrived and offered his services. One of our Fire Chief's swore him in, on the spot. The call, turned out to be unfounded (there was never a child in the water) but the diver eventually went to Probie school, and did volunteer, as a firefighter, for quite a few years.

I wish they could do this on a national level! I've said this for a long time. This movement that's been created does so much for families with missing loved ones. You should be aloud to search any body of water without interference. You're not only helping families with missing loved ones. You're also cleaning up our water sources by removing vehicles that don't belong in our waterways! There should be no restrictions to cleaning up our environment!
