I just have the strongest feeling that Eric actually liked Tris that's half the reason why he targeted her so much, the other half because he hates four and four liked her too. Eric can see she favored aka like four and it makes him jealous and angry at her cause she obviously chooses four. -At the beginning, he seems intruged by her cause she was the first to jump, such bravery in a stiff, plus she is damn pretty. Everyone makes fun of her except him. -He then, keeps looking at her and admire her alot throughout the next following scenes with him, so I'm sure he noticed four always looking and helping her, difference is, she looks at four differently than she looks at him. Four got to her first. -The knife scene he is admiring her throwing skill like four. But one thing about Eric is if he likes you, you dont question his methods. After he notices she notices she is bleeding, he halts and his voice gets lighter as he warns her. -He warns her alot throughout the whole movie. -The whole train scene. period. he walks up like "whoa, pretty." and then the stare. even four's face looks like four noticed Eric might like her too at 11:20 (four eyebrows) -He cuts off her when she walks. By now, we know he targeting her cause of jealousy and that he lost in alot of stuff to four, even the girl and that just pisses him off. The rest of the movie, he is so obviously jealous. Just love Eric. I wanna write a fanfic now... xD

Hey lol im reading between the lines, going with what I see and that is what I see. Just hear me out. :) Watch him more closely, hes looks, hes voice, hes actions, its very much like a jealous second. Even in the deleted scene with Eric, tris and four, thats why they deleted it, cause eric stands close and looks in her eyes, the way he looks at her, the way he talks. He seemed like the type that bullies those he might like cause of where he comes from, hes just used to being a stick in the mud cause he was raised around a lot of smart stick in the mud kind of people, hes prideful and he warns her, as if always giving her a chance. He warns her with words, but with her friend, hes only warning was pushing and hanging her off a wet metal ledge. He puts the warning listen to me or die waring very clearly to her fried. But with Tris, the warnings keep coming. lol Looks like special treatment to me. By the second movie, when he says, "Its really good to see you again." I think he genuinely meant that, but also in a dark way, like I can picture him dreaming about meeting her again, going off between having nights of choking her and possibly "wet dreams" of her, the way he stood very close in the deleted scene in part one and looked in her eyes, his voice when he warns her yet again, like a guy would have if he hated and loved a girl. Plus, she kind of shot him in the leg for Four. I bet that hurt. Eric is super prideful and when you hurt his pride, he takes it personally. And he lost alot to Four, just because he lost again in even a chance of love, he takes it personally. He literally is hunting her especially, probably more than he wants Four. That chase in the woods. Like thinking in part two, in Tris case, "If you dont love me, then you deserve to die and I'll kill you myself." Eric is very twisted in the mind. xD Idk, Im usually good at guessing these things, everything a director does in a movie is for a reason. I think its like that in Eric's case, but shippers weren't taking the bait as much as they took Four, I mean Four is a very big rival in love, EVERYONE just loves four. xD im sorry super long comment but trust me watch it again with this in mind, eric scenes. :D

I really love the scenes that showcase the rivalry between Four and Eric particularly the scene where Four says "Lucky for you, those weren't the rules when we fought". In the "Four" book Four beats Eric in a fight and the scene in the film alludes to the fact that Eric conceded a fight (possibly to Four) during their initiation.

I always loved the dynamic between Four and Eric. I also really strongly believe that they both have skills that the other doesn’t, which is why they both hate each other because they can never truly compete as equals. Even though it isn’t displayed as much in the movie, Eric is really smart and he does what needs to be done, while Four is really strong and he acts on his emotions.

If I'm being honest, I actually have a certain respect for Eric's character. As a kid, my parent's always sent me to high-level soccer camps and I would often be playing with kids who were older than me. Eric reminds me of a lot of guys while playing soccer. He's confident, a bit obnoxious, but also capable. If you put out, perform well, keep your head down, he won't bother you and will eventually treat you with respect. If you are weak or don't put out, he will ridicule you and make you want to quit. I respect his character for some reason.

One of the big reasons Allegiant ultimately failed: they killed off all the good villains in the second film and dropped a new one in the final one with none of the development and buildup of the previous films. Eric was a perfect example. Such a vile character who had beef with the characters and a legitimate threat, only to be abruptly killed off.
