Certified full cave in 2000 and I didn’t set foot onto Eagles Nest property for 13 years …. Well worth the wait and the experience I gained in that 13 years of actively cave diving was priceless when I made my first dives at the Nest !!!

So, do you suppose so many are impatient to, well ---- dive into caves, out of arrogance ("I'm an instructor" or "I'll be fine if I only go a little ways in" or whatever they say to justify doing the thing that they're explicitly warned not to do) or ?? They are warned not to go into caves without proper training, and *still* they do it. edited to add, it's like they lose track of the basic truth that water isn't our world. The fact that we merely *visit* an alien (in the sense that water is deadly unless we bring air/gas), is part of the reason that people dive.

By that point I had several hundred cave dives and quite a few certifications beyond “Full Cave”… Advanced Nitrox, Decompression Procedures, Trimix 1, Trimix 2 … just to name a few. Things were much different then than they are now though …. Primarily, rebreathers weren’t in common usage then so everything was done with open circuit equipment

Gus, you are looking very healthy! Great job with whatever you are doing. Your reaction to our Eagles Nest visit in 2020, coupled with the loss of our friend last year REALLY gives me some haunting time to reflect. I just hope that more and more people can grasp what you are telling them better than we did, before they experience a VERY TOUGH lesson. As we gain experience in our diving, many do feel a sense of "Oh, I'll just go do this real quick...". It is too damn easy to fall into that mentality and justify or minimize things that we just SHOULD NOT DO. We have found ourselves victims of preventable circumstances and unfortunately, you don't see it coming until it has gone past the point of no return. I just pray that new divers and newly certified cave divers will be more diligent than we were and heed your advice.

You guys are great man. I wouldn't worry about what others THINK. Those that watch and have ANY amount of empathy can see that both Gus and Woody go above and beyond to show humility and say "this is what I would do" or "We don't know what all they knew". ANYONE with empathy can see you are both good guys. You can't please everybody.

Eagles nest is a different level of Florida cave diving. The depth is really the biggest hurdle. Dives to 300+ feet require training beyond just full cave. It’s a bucket list dive for me, but I know I have many more cave dives and much more training before even planning this dive. I’ve been diving for 20 years, but this is definitely beyond my skill level.

What makes your critique valid is it always points to how breaking from fundamentals can be the most dangerous thing you can do. In almost every case, some aspect of the fundamental do & don't leads to a chain reaction that results in a fatality. So, being strict fundamentalists, you're able to recognize why those practices are necessary and provide insight into how they could've prevented tragedy. Never have i taken your opinions as judgments. They're simply a reminder of why we have such standards in an activity with so little margin for error. So I'm glad you two serve to analyze and explain to prevent future losses.

I've had some things going on lately and haven't been to your channel for a bit, and WOW Gus, you look wonderful! Seems like you've slimmed down and just look generally healthier. Not that you didn't look good before, but I know how tough it can be to get any weight to budge and try to build more muscle, ESPECIALLY once you've gone beyond your 20's and early 30's. Congrats for what I'm sure is a well earned change for the better! It's always motivational to see others getting healthier, particularly in the face of the dark "pandemic" BS the world has just been through. Woody and yourself are so amazing to listen to. You can ALWAYS count on some smiles and good vibes here at Dive Talk! Some of us aren't divers at all, so please don't apologize for breaking things down to the details. My understanding of cave diving is that there is no room for 'mavericks' or risk takers. It is a long studied and practiced hobby that has build up a set of ridged rules and lore that must be followed to the letter, there is no wriggle room. But cave diving really does show how humans are, we have accidents, make mistakes and take risks. However much more information gets put in the rule book there will sadly be deaths every year due to humans being human. Sad they died, they never intended it, the fear and feeling of isolation must have been crushing.

Mount Everest of underwater caves is located in Czech, called Hranicka Abyss (or Propast'). I'd say it's even beyond Everest, 'cause, literally, no one can reach the bottom. Recently they've sent ROV/AUV robot, it reached somewhere about 1500 feet, but the cave goes farther, it's not the end! They will modify the robot, but this cave can go like 10x deeper, than the Eagles nest cave! It might even bottomless, literally. The water there is highly carbonated and acidic, which makes it extremely difficult and dangerous for exploration.

I couldn’t go snorkeling. Yet alone cave dive. I tried snorkeling in the Keys close to shore and just to get use to it. Swam out and all the sudden the ground disappeared and it was a void. I had reached a cliff like edge. I freaked out and began swimming towards the shore. That’s when I knew… nope. Now I’m scared of the ocean. Too big and unpredictable. I’m good on land. Both u are very smart in the way that u follow every rule to cave diving , plus u stay together in an effort to look after each other. It's like riding a sports bike all your life , if you want to survive riding your motorcycle for 20 or 30 years is that you have to follow certain rules , like not coming over a blind hil going 250 or 300 km per hour. That's one of the most important rules , I know at least 10 guys that died coming blind over a hill and boom , someone pulling out of there driveway or doing a u-turn. Every sport or Hobbie a person does there are rules involved . It's like I'm not wearing a life vest because it's not cool. Yeah because drowning is cool .

There is a difference between panicking in a dangerous situation and having a panic attack. Panic attacks are like allergic reactions. Your body has decided, for whatever reason, that this completely mundane thing is a life-threatening situation and acts accordingly. At least with allergic reactions you can identify the triggers and take precautions, but there aren’t really any precautions for panic attacks other than learning to recognize the onset and removing yourself from the situation. Unfortunately, like y'all mentioned, you can’t quickly remove yourself from a cave if you have a panic attack down there. You either have to ride it out, which could take minutes or even an hour, or rely on your diving buddy to get you out safely. I remember the first time I got a panic attack, I was very confused as to what was happening. I was in a safe and familiar environment, so there was no reason to panic. Suddenly, my heart rate spiked, and I was shaking and crying. I had no idea what was going on, and my friends were worried because they’d never seen me act like that. After that, I did a whole bunch of research so that I'd know what to do if I ever had a panic attack again, but most people have no idea what to do in this kind of situation. I can’t even imagine how terrifying it would be to have a panic attack while cave diving.

I really appreciate y’all talking about training, and it’s importance, and you obviously need it to be certified anyway. It relates so well to one of my passions, firearms, regarding training. Besides becoming proficient with them, it helps with something that is of utmost importance to me, being safe. Just as training does for people who cave dive. The panic y’all discussed ties into it, as well. Training can very well prevent that. You do it so much that you aren’t getting panicked, wondering “what do I do?!” You’re not fumbling things around. As y’all well know, training creates muscle memory. The beauty in that is, you’re not even having to ask yourself what to do next. Training/muscle memory kicks in and causes you to just do it! It’s the exact same with shooting. When, God forbid, any of us are ever in a situation that we need to defend ourselves with a firearm, but if so, the adrenaline kicks in and can easily cause panic. However, that’s when the training kicks in. Anyway, sorry for carrying on for so long. I know y’all know these things, but hopefully someone who doesn’t sees it. Again, thank you for stressing the importance of training!

Rebreathers introduce a lot more risk factors, but it sure is nice having 6+ hours of breathing capability strapped on instead of the 5-10 minutes an 80 cu. ft. will give you at 300' deep. In a more realistic example, a pair of cave-filled LP85s will run dry at that depth after around 30 minutes at a reasonable 0.7cfm SAC rate.

Back in Nam we flooded several sections of tunnels and we had to dive in looking for intel. The murky silt and mud mad it nearly impossible. We lost a few men that got lost in the tunnels then we got smart and started running air lines for unlimited air supply. People still got lost but could eventually make their way back out. Sometimes there were lots of bodies of the enemy in the tunnels. All I can say is fudge that if asked to do that again.

This sport reminds me of powered paragliding. Ive been flying for several years now. It's a sport that has very little government regulation which is why we love it. That in turn brings people into the sport who refuse to get proper trainning from and instructor. Legally they dont have too, but you dont know what you dont know. Something simple could get you injured or killed in a heartbeat. I see so many similiaralites in diving and ppg flying. I imagine diving is like flying 99% of accidents are pilot error or diver error. It's usually not because of a mechanical malfunction. It's usually always pilot error. Complacency kills. Avaiation has checklist and I reccomend sticking with it and no matter how many ytimes youve done it and last flight was good doesnt mean the next one something wont go wrong. Always follow the checklist it will save your life. Flying we dont want the Faa coming in with more regulations and so its so important to get the info out there to new pilots. All it takes is a bad accident because someone didnt get properly trained for the Faa to make it law.

I’m from NY, Grew up on both island’s. From learning to dive here, we learn real fast what zero vis is, it’s mostly dark and silty, and our sound and inlets have a lot of wrecks, so learning overhead, and caving is almost a must atleast for our group. I don’t know these guys but I do believe they had cave certs but not sure. I also want to add, some situations yes your training kicks in, but it also depends on the emergency, if it’s a no air or super fast rise or decent, if you only have training and no real life emergency situations big or small, training or not that panic can really mess a person up, in calm emergencies you may think you can be like that through any emergencies, but depending on the emergency, stoutness isn’t always the outcome.

The same logic that would have the state outlawing cave diving could be used to outlaw open water diving, or sky diving, or auto racing or motorcycle riding, or football or any of a million other activities that people enjoy and value but which come with risks. Despite the inevitable tragedies, as a general matter the diving community is a wonderful example of mature and responsible self-regulation.

SO im just here to point out - the video said that he had a *panic attack*, just an fiy, as someone who has multiple of those a day no matter what - PANICKING and A PANICK ATTACK is NOT the same thing. However, in a cave diving situation, im sure, both are equally as bad and dangerous. Love the vids btw!

I know that a lot of people who watch these videos that are not divers (not one myself due to medical issues and needing to get my doctor permission) and just say the simple thing "This is why I don't dive" or "what were they expecting?" as if it is a deathtrap. Then that thought gets cemented in their heads and it turns to "we need to shutdown this cave! One death is too many!" while they are smoking their cigarettes or drinking their booze or even about to skydive. The fact that Woody wants people in that hobby or area to self regulate instead of just closing it down and making it illegal is something everyone can understand. Do you really want people outside of your hobby/job/skill set/area to tell you to stop doing that thing they never did because it sounds dangerous?

Hi Gus and Woody from a Kiwi mate. Don’t think that you come across as the “ oh no it’s the dive talk guys” , because if 1 diver has listened to you guys, who give excellent advice in all your talks, and reconsidered a potential bad mistake , you both saved that dudes life. And I’m sure that’s happened more than once. Also I don’t think they should close caves for the same reasons you mentioned. And you guys are humble and it’s one of reasons I watch ya’s Keep up the great work

Saying something is the mount everest of something should really make people more apprehensive. That mountain is covered in bodies of very experienced hikers that knew what they where doing and had the right equipment and they still died, because that mountain is dangerous.

The human habits of being in the present as well as fear and panic are instincts that keep us alive in most survival situations but are less than helpful in this sort of activity. I watched a retrieved camera where a diver really enjoying the moment and filming it apparently calculated weight wrong so only when he sees the bottom does his wrist come up to check his depth. The almost meditative experience abruptly becomes terror the instance he sees he's already three times deeper than intended. Pulls his inflation but at 91 meters it explodes instead. He drops his heavy camera but it's far too late. There was nothing else to it. Nothing in between taking in the euphoria and full panic. The mistake was made before he even got into the water but the calmness on camera gave no sense of the danger unfolding nor did the panic embody any advantage to survival. If getting distracted in the moment is not a mistake then he had no opportunity to a different outcome after he got in the water beyond random chance. I would say rules learned in training are the only tools you can use when cave diving and your instinctual reactions may serve little purpose.

Panic attacks can happen for no real reason... some people are prone to them. Some people are good at handling panic attacks, some people aren't.

I think since the diving tragedies get spread more than non accident dives people assume oh you going in a cave you gonna die ya know. Ps. Repect the risk and be prepared. Dont fear the risk and panic :7

I think people criticize cave diving because the margin of error is so small that even if you are the greatest and most experienced cave diver, when something goes wrong - chances of survival are overwhelmingly stacked against him/her. What does happen, is that human nature kicks in - in this case the desire to keep pushing oneself. And the chances of an accident increases the more a caver pushes him/herself to new depths. Just my opinion. Not crapping on the caving community.
