Diversity in Exeter University can be misunderstood: it is diverse when it comes to different nationalities from Europe and Asia; it is not diverse when we talk ethnicity wise, & BME.
👑ABOUT THIS VIDEO👑
In this video, Nicole and Agata give us their opinion and their experience of Exeter University, giving you yet another perspective about the issue faced in Exeter.
PART TWO IS OUT: • Diversity at Exeter Un...
Please remember that this video has been shot before the recent racism incident in Exeter, therefore this was their mentality before the incident!
I started this initiative as I felt that more people should speak up about their experience here in Exeter and hopefully this will help some of you understand more what's to expect in Exeter University.

TJR AG I’m actually on the Penryn Campus and it has been amazing ngl. I’m studying Law with Business and it’s bought sooo many people from London and ethnic minorities, its crazy! We are by far the most diverse year and I can only see it get it getting more diverse. (Penryn - I’m not sure about the other campuses, but I’ve heard their more diverse than my campus!)

I never find it hard to make friends and I’ve got my guys etc but it’s so different, there’s no culture. 90% of ppl here dnt even season their food that’s exactly what there personality is like too. This is an eye opener for me...i gt admission in MBA program at Exeter and i was really looking forward to being there this fall, but now i think i should look at my other options, i am Indian and if a girl from London is being racially profiled then God knows what i need to go through. It's shocking!!

Sending you much love! Again, if you look at some other videos you will see a whole spectrum of opinions, ranging from my positive one to others a bit different! Not everyone is hideous and racist in exeter, it is really just a small minority of rotten apples that ruin it for the rest of us but after what happened last week there have been students uniting faced to the issue from all ethnicities and this shows that we unite as a community no matter what. I went to exeter and loved it but again, every persons experience is different. I am just here to showcase every angle xx

Yes Nicole was so funny to film! However lets not forget that not all "rich white village people" are "bad". By having prejudices against them we become as bad, and on the same level, as people who judge BME for the pigmentation of their skin. :)
@sia2761

Student Life Vlogs Francesca well I didn’t say they were bad people. I’m just saying as a person who’s grown up in both all white and somewhat diverse education pools it’s clear that one group will treat you with more respect. The issue is when you only have rich white people, it creates a really hostile and dangerous environment for POC. Some people literally grow up without ever really seeing black or brown people and they don’t know how to behave socially around us, which breeds racism. I guess it’s hard to understand if you’re not POC.

I am extremely interested in learning more about that world hence why i interview and showcase it on my channel I really want to give everyone an equal voice and say on their uni experience especially at exeter. I am conscious that I will never fully understand the struggles of certain communities and my comment didnt mean to imply that you were saying that rich white village were bad. It comes from communication and immersing ourselves in the opposite shoes to truly understand whats going on. I hope that, with this video, i open the eyes and educate my "white viewership" to keep an open mind on the consequences of their small (and big for some) actions and help other communities understand whats really happening inside exeter.

Hi, really thanks for this video! I'm an exchange student from China who will come to Exeter in September. I'm a little bit worried after seeing this video because I really do not know much about English jokes or the proverbs or commonly used expressions..just like ITS LIKE GET OUT. I don't know what does this mean, but I can guess it's something bad. Could you please reccommend some ways to learn those unique things that can hardly be seen from books? And also I want to know what's poplular among you guys, flims, books, musics,sports...whatever. Just fearing that I have nothing to say when first meet students at uni.

Doris Jiang omg ur too sweet lol, Get Out was this recent Hollywood horror movie that basically pointed out loads of biases within American culture towards Black people, pointing out things like police brutality. I won't spoil the movie for you because I'd highly recommend watching it because its really funny too. I'm actually trying to learn Spanish and want to study it at uni, and I think the main thing is just trying to make friends and stuff from that culture, and then things like watching tv shows and movies etc. :)

I live and work here in Exeter as a black woman in my late 20s and honestly I can't wait to leave. It's a beautiful city and I love that I can walk to work because I hate commuting but the age and ethnic diversity in the city is just awful. The young professional population is so low, this is in comparison to cities such as Manchester and London which I both lived in. If I wanted to come in to contact with a more ethnically diverse population I'd have to try and befriend uni students which is awkward for a woman who left uni 6 years ago. It's been quite difficult to make friends especially the type of work I do as well. My mental health has truly suffered and this is coming from someone who is introverted. There are beautiful surrounding areas that I'd love to visit but having a car would be ideal to this and unfortunately I don't drive. This is just another perspective to back up what the two young ladies have said in the videos.

Hi thank you for this video ! Also I’ve talked to a few students who go to the uni currently and they have told me now clubs do stay open on sat/Fridays till around 3-3:30am now and that EX4 and another club stay open till like 4am on Thursday/Friday and sat (vaults till 4:30am ) so it seems that the nightclubs may have improved in terms of the earliness of closing at least on the day’s of sat / fri so maybe now 2years on its slightly better . That being said obviously it won’t live up to massive city clubs due to the variety you’ll get in them tbh

Firstly, Great video! I think it is important to differentiate between race and nationality. Most negative things that were mentioned stemmed from nationality differences. The girl from Spain obviously had much more cultural barriers to cross, since she's never lived in the UK before, which is more a nationality issue than a race issue. If you come from another country, you have to be prepared to adapt to a new culture. I'm sure you had to deal with that as well Fran, even though you're white.

I am replying to this 5 years later... anyway, yes and that was also the point. I was happy to have both someone from London and someone from Spain, so that you could see the different perspectives in the same video. What you say is correct: some of the problematics were about coming to the UK rather than diversity and I hope that people are able to differentiate them :)

Very interesting to hear the experience at the uni from other students' perspective. If you can believe it, for me being at Exeter there was a lot more diversity than where I live so hearing that other people had the opposite experience did take me a bit by surprise. Of course though, if you're from places like London, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you for making videos like these - they will be of great use to prospective students whether ethnic minorities or not.

Is there more diversity now as compared to when this video was made 5 years ago? Asking as a prospective International student from india
@BluPlays
@BluPlays 7 ай бұрын
@nasreen1581 there's probably a bit more diversity now but as I wasn't there 5 years ago I can't really say. There are quite a lot of international students though, and I know a couple who are from India/whose family is from India, like one of my friends in my shared house. There is also of course an Indian society and I know there was a Diwali celebration on campus this year which my friend went to. Universities in larger cities in the UK will of course be more diverse than Exeter, but I think it would be a shame to disregard a university because of diversity - Exeter really is lovely! But I get why you might be worried. One thing I will say though is that Exeter won't become more diverse if there aren't people willing to try it out!

That's a great question. I certainly wouldn't know much as I have been outside Exeter for the past years. However I should be going back in February to teach a marketing class and will make sure to vlog or give my updated observations. Unfortunately that doesn't help you much in the present moment. I hope someone who has more answers sees your comment and shares!

My experience at the main campus (Streatham) is that students tend to stick to their own groups based on nationality or region. Despite efforts to promote equality, issues of racism and classism persist, which was clearly evident during the orientation activities, which segregated students, highlighted similarities rather than embracing differences, and encouraged students to judge based on appearance. As I walked about the campus, I observed people of the same race greeting each other in passing with enthusiasm, however, they acted as though I was invisible. Even in class, the students avoid sitting near you, and would even turn their back when you try to engage them in conversation. The school is definitely majority white, and certain accommodations may have a SPRINKLE of coloured students throughout the accommodation blocks. I'm not saying every accommodation is like this, but in my accommodation, I was never invited to any of their social events held in the kitchen. In fact, those whom my (non-coloured) flatmates DID invite, from other accommodations, would give me a look as I entered the kitchen as if to say 'What are you doing here?'. They wouldn't say a word if I spoke to them. However, they didn't hesitate to talk about and laugh at you after you exited the room. They look at you as if YOU don't belong in the flat to which you were assigned.

My daughter got A* A* A* in Cambridge International (CIE) Psychology, Maths and Physics. But got rejected by Exteter for not having a GCSE English. She scored all top grades including English in the GCSE equivalent but they did not recognise it. You do need good English to score 94% in CIE Psychology. Anyway she is happy to accept a spot at Oxford. So Exeter is blinkered to more people, even white international students.

as she should! well done her! exeter admissions team are the worst at handling most specific cases, blinded by protocol... so much so that they lose on great opportunities such as accepting your daughter in the school. You would think that someone from the marketing team would have reached out to me to form a partnership since my videos were the only ones at the time of starting this channel but nope...! they even made it hard for me to make them. It all comes back and to be honest, I am more focused on helping students than showcasing exeter in a good light: if my POV and interviewees POV is overall positive, good for Exeter, if not, not a problem. As long as the viewers seeing this can get as much information as possible, the consequences on the uni per se is not a priority for me. Again, congrats for your daughter, I hope her all the best! My mother went to Oxford too and had a great time once upon a time!

Because they are not sporty. Exeter is in the most beautiful place in the UK, get out and explore the beaches and other sport societies. Also when you visited open day, you can tell if you will fit in. UK is still a white people country so of course they are still a majority. By the way, I’m Asian and my children are mixed races , white-Asian. They don’t have problems fitting in at Exeter uni at all as they joined the right groups of friends who are sporty and do well academically. Don’t feel too sensitive being black. If you work hard and do well, people would over look that.

Thank you very much for sharing your own testimonial. I think it is valuable to share these kind of videos and stories from different people with different interests because it sparks these kind of conversations and people will be able to read ALL of them and see where their own experience, behaviours and belief fit, so that they can have accurate expectations of what is coming next. Comments like yours that respectfully offer another perspective help the viewers see the topic from all angles and that is exactly what I am hoping to bring to this channel: meaningful conversation.

Carmen Salazar - maybe because there are many factors within society causing black and other minority ethnic groups to live in places of poverty or low-class where we internalise the restricted code so don’t comment on something that she had no choice in internalising. Face it: Exeter is completely whitewashed making other ethnic groups feel uncomfortable as they stand out so much and may not feel like they belong there. You’d understand if you were in a black-washed community but past circumstances have disadvantaged ethnic minority groups so please don’t try and make smug remarks at situations you will neverrrrrr understand. Wow. I’m 17 and can understand life a lot more than you. Shocking
