Recently the Chronicle of Higher Ed ran a piece on a "southern disadvantage" in hiring at universities (I work at one), because of the conservative politics of southern states. Sounds like it's no better in left-leaning states. Universities are now a sick weave of authoritarianism and spinelessness. My liberal colleagues are afraid of being fired for what they say, my conservative colleague (singular) is afraid of being fired for what s/he says. Yet both sides are fine with the policies that sustain that fear, so long as those policies are being aimed at the other side. Neither side seems to understand the concept of the double-edged sword.

a population that is totally not-tribal is just going to get conquered by a population that is tribal. individualism can only be maintained long-term by a group of people who have enough sense of unity and shared identity that they can be individualist towards other members within the group but tribal to those outside the group. universal individualism i.e. pure anti-tribalism is a weak strategy that will inevitably be taken over by people acting tribally. it's common sense. imagine two populations with the same distribution of ability competing in the job market. One population is totally individualistic , the other has in-group preference aka tribalism aka nepotism. When a member of the individualistic population applies for a job or promotion, then everyone on the committeewill rate his performance fairly. When a member of the tribal population applies for a job or promotion, then the individualistic population will rate his performance fairly, but the tribal population will rate him with an extra advantage. Thus members of the tribal population have an advantage over the individualistic population and over time will occupy a greater and greater % of the senior positions of power in the society. Being individualistic in this case is simply putting yourself at a disadvantage by comparison and allowing your fairness and good will to be taken advantage of, letting yourself get used like a chump.

What? They ask you to resign for your ideas and you say you're glad you're just a teacher now?? No wonder why we are so much under attack.

Great conversation! I don't fully buy the search for truth vs politics framing though, mostly because I'm someone interested in using both concepts and wary of abuse of either. It would be fun to loop someone like Adolph Leonard Reed Jr. into this discussion to bring a bit of the materialist critique of cultural leftism.
