Hey James! Rock climber here. Two, well three, very easy knots (especially the on a bite versions) are the double figure of 8 (this is awesome for droptanks) and the double bowline. A very easy to make, good for clipping in (proven by alpinists who secure their live with that on glaciers) and also very easy to undo after you put a lot of tension on it would be the Alpine Butterfly. So again: 1. Double figure of 8 (Extreme secure and easy to do on a bite) 2. Double bowline (Super easy do to on a bite if you know how an overhand is made) 3. Alpine Butterfly (Choice of hardcore glacier climbin and easy to undo even after loading it)

Hi James, you might consider the "butterfly" and "clove hitch" in addition. Butterfly is great to place a loop in a certain position in the middle of a rope. Clove hitch is great to have a very fast attachment at poles or rings.

Great info, thanks for this weekly tutorials. I will like to add to bowline info: as a rock climber I learned that under certain circumstances the bowline may slip, especially with New lines/ropes (climbers use ropes) so if a live will depend on that knot, then end it with a double fisherman's knot (better yet use an eight knot)

I also use a modified reef knot by securing the short ends in another knot.

Very helpful refresher on knots 👍 PS: in the fire brigade I learned a stronger version of the last knot used for fixating yourself when you lower someone or something on a rope. (so a very reliable and quick to open knot) In German it is called "Achternknoten". It's almost as simple as the knot in the video :)

It's a figure eight on a bight. I learned about that knot (and the more common double figure eight) when I learned to rock climb as a kid. Its basically adding another half twist to the overhand loop and should be a much stronger knot to use for that application.

The real beauty of the bowline is that no matter the load you put on the knot, it’s never going to bind up to the point you can’t undo it like say the square knot or others.

I wonder what the naming history of the reef knot is. I learned that knot to be a square knot. It could just be a regional difference as I learned in the Boy Scouts in the US.

Although Unlikely I don't think the fishermen knot is appropriate to be around your neck, it is possible to be strangled if something gets into where you suggest putting the mouthpiece and pulls the person could be strangled.

Your sheet bend is unfortunately incorrect. When finished, both "tails" of the knot need to be on the same side, instead of pointing off opposite like that. The solution is to go under and through on the other side. Tied incorrectly like that the knot can collapse.

Thanks. Helpful video but when you start the knot we cannot see because your hands and the rope is right at the bottom and almost out of the video.
