These are the best Phone Apps For Scuba Divers according to Divers Ready! Or at least, the apps I use on a regular basis.
This was a viewer-requested video. Let me know what topic you'd like me to cover in future quick tips videos.
I use dive apps on my iPhone for dive planning; dive logging; GPS navigation and to interact with my scuba training agency. I also have a collection of the best weather apps for scuba divers that I use all the time to plan for weather with my technical diving students here in south Florida.
There are lots of diver apps out there for logging dives, but I have always found the best dive log app is the one that comes from your dive computer manufacturer. I log my dives with the Shearwater or Garmin apps when using their dive computers which are the best.
I have yet to find a decent social media app for scuba divers. Lots have been pitched, but nothing has come to market stage.
Thanks as always for watching!

Subsurface for logging. The desktop version is most useful, but the mobile version will slurp dives off a Bluetooth computer or the desktop version if you still need to use a cable. Has a cloud function, but you can save the log on your computer. The main reason I like it is that it's brand agnostic and standalone, so you're not depending on subscriptions, can change computer, and it'll save the data in a text format if you want, so even if the app dies in the future, your data isn't lost. It's a data-driven tool and will let you log gas consumption, weight and equipment, whatever your computer spits out (depth/temp/etc). It was written by the same guy that originally developed Linux... turns out he's also a diver.

I strictly use Subsurface, originally developed by Linus Torvalds (Linux). I love the fact that's compatible with almost every dive computer in the market. It allows me to maintain my dive log sequence organized even when I change to a different brand dive computer.

I always appreciate a solid answer of basically "nothing other than the basics." I too use basically a weather app, a dive org app (SSI - it is crap, but it has my member number), dive computer linking app (Shearwater) and no social media apps. Thanks for letting me know I'm not missing anything.

One of the most useful things on my phone isn't an app... it's the links I have bookmarked to the local surf schools' webcams, so that I can check out the conditions I'm likely to encounter at the shore dive sites before leaving the house :-)

I use a lot of these same apps. I started out with an aqualung computer and used the genaric Dive Log+ app until I upgraded to my Garmin. Now it's just more convenient to use the Garmin app like you said. They are both good apps though. Great video as always. Safe Diving.

I use TauchApp for iOS to find diving spots and plan my dives. Very interesting community based approach by a young startup from Germany. At least for the folks here in Europe, especially in the DACH region that seems to become the new standard. Let‘s see how it evolves. Cheers ✌🏻

I use water map live cost €4,99 a year you send an N- AIS signal with your phone and can see vessels using N-AIS whether it is freight or pleasure live progress on the water map. Handy for the watch out in water with bends and curved coastlines. I hope in the future I can add info to my position anchored and diving, maybe I can but didn’t figure that one out yet. I also use wind guru , diver log + with the I 300 C, and Garmin captain with a striker + 7sv for underwater charting.

So third party dive log aps, these would be good to review inyour next vid as a recap of this vid. Especially ones that can import smartrak logs. Uwatec screws me over again, cause when I export to traveltrak to be able to use log trak I loose more then 100 dives. Why, mostlikely because I added manual dives from when I started, used a grey aladin and now a terra and a sol and a tec 2g. There are 30 years of dives in my log. Didnt do my best capture them all, but enough that I not want to miss

Great content as always! Thank you for sharing this with us! For weather I use windy (red logo with two white swooshs). I wonder if I have used it and how it compares to the ones you currently use? Regarding the apps for logging the dives, it would be great if you could compare more extensively multiple apps… I suffer from diving with multiple computers as well, so is there a great app that can consolidate all the dives and sync with all computers? And do you ever export your logged dives to your agency app? Is there an easy way to do so? Thanks!

A seconder for Windy. I like the heat map colouring & graphic for wind speed. Can then zoom right in for wind strength, primary wave & secondary swell at a particular location. Then look up to a week ahead.

Great video but I would like to know if there is a way to sync, download, or backup the two systems to have all of your dives in one location. I project that it could be frustrating looking for a dive and not remembering which device you dove with that day. Or if you upgrade to another brand, having your previous dives transfer. Thanks

PS - Testing Paralenz and GoPro10, with filters, not impressed with the GoPro 10 footage. Shooting in flat mode 4K 120, maybe processing will salvage it. No idea James's ProTunes settings yet. Most agree low sharpness (it just adds artifacts) and flat works best for almost any mode, also use high bit rate. Your events in the water are more precious than a memory chip.

Just a quick note: I am in Maui now, the water is 82 degrees and if anyone says you need a wetsuit they are full of crap. If you do, get a1 mm Farmer John to protect the core, no gloves either but bring boots with solid rubber heals. The biggest problem with those darn Green Sea Turtles is the are too friendly, I have have too many swim right up to me and eating algae and the damn swells throw us about over the rocks and coral. I had a single one throw me about 12 feet and then they are 3 feet away and you have no way to turn around and move away so to wait of them to move so you can. I have no footage but I was on the bottom at maybe only 15 feet or so watching one maybe 30 feet away and it came down and swim right towards me, I freeze, in chick not fear, and at about 4-5 feet it looks at me turns to be parallel and glides in next to me. I can see its eye, it feels foot away. After whet feels like minute but was probably 5 seconds I was able to slowly back away. Why? I am haunted by turtles. I see them all the time when others do not. I do not remember a single snorkel or dive on Maui where one, or 6 out of 8, did not appear. Sorry, not related but I had to let people know. You do NOT need a 3mm wetsuit for Maui. Probably trying Kapalua next but just snorkling. BCD rental is impossible in Maui now thanks to covid-19. I would still avoid it for a year unless you want to do tours. Otherwise, I would SCUBA Mala Wharf today. Precious indeed. Even a tank fill is hard now. Shops either refuse or their equipment is down, sad.

"What Three Words" is an awesome app, for diving as well as other purposes. What it does is that it divides the entire planet into 3x3 meter squares (~9x9 ft.), and gives each square a unique address made up of 3 words. Now, when you want to tell your buddy where to meet up on the shore, instead of giving them complex explanations or cumbersome GPS coordinates, you just tell them - "meet me at twee.wrangling.donor", and off you go diving in Dahab's Blue Hole
