Great discussion. This is why the trade needs a big pay rise because of all this we have to know but then a customer thinks ahh it’s just a grey cable 🙄

I remember the introduction of PME and thinking "Do I trust an external earth?". Every house I worked on had it's own earth electrode. And here we are! Loads of old rural properties here with old earth electrode still connected even though incomer is now, (supposedly), PME. The photo at 45:00 is a real eye opener. Thank you chaps.

Thanks to you all for taking the time to do this discussion, I recently went to a friends home to repair a light, for no reason I tested his sockets earth fault loop which was 217 ohms. I looked at the supply cable, a old PILC CABLE but NO earth connection to the Consumer Unit. He contacted SP Energy Network who sent a engineer around on the same day who simply said “ yes there is no earth provided “ but we won’t provide one, you will have to provide your own , get a earth rod installed !!! Is he right not to provide a earth ? I never found any bonding to gas or water, I have no idea where the 217 ohm reading comes from. ( It’s an old house so must never had a “proper” earth

36:30 What if you have over head lines but you are close to the fenced in transformer that is fed with underground cables? I've had some scary things happen at the meter board (in my kitchen) when the big transformer has done the big light show and electronic music before It made even bigger boom.. everything around felt charged for a moment, kinda scared to have any Class One now :/

Yeah that does sound like a bad combination of circumstances. The wording 'charged environment' is key here as that is most likely exactly what you have.

This is a recording from last year - the video has been available to view on the 'Team Electrical E5' youtube channel. I saw some discussions about NCD in my facebook group so decided to make the video public here as well to get this info out there. We will be returning to do an update video on this later this year.

How about smart meters having a clamp on coil to throw over the earthing conductor to monitor for earth currents. Meter could give an early alert to the dno of potential problems.
@dave-d

I thought that too. Easy to implement.

...and with this implementation most of DNO would become bankrupt... (this would never happen, not in my life time!)

As i understand it - in island mode you can still connect to supplier earth and a spike simultaneously but when you isolate from the incoming supply you then need to tie your island neutral to earth to stop it floating. That's what the relay is for, a N-E bridge for island mode, not to switch any earths in or out as is suggested here.

is it too much for the DNO to put a bloody label in the Cable entry point?

Had a 3AM call-out, due to burning pipes in the kitchen. By the time I arrived, the electricity was disconnected, but the pipes were still hot to the touch. Due mid of the night, did not think to check with the clamp meter, but the water bonding (4mm) connected close to the flex hoses which burned was an obvious suspect. Megger 1741 showed

Defo DNC in a building. Lots of warning in network standards of this. Lot of folks try and cross bond or earth their way to masking it. They have no clue. Well done for finding it. I’d love to see pics etc. Of the incident.. you can send to me or the ninja on socials

Surely the risk could be considerably lower by having gas and water in plastic piping as it leaves the property so it doesnt bond to the neighbouring properties well that's how i see it.

Perhaps the DNO should be adding a clamp Meter or other earth current monitoring equipment when they install new Meters ? The technology is easily available now so there is no excuse. If they can read amounts the KWs of Current used and Bill us directly from this tech , why can't they see dangerous problems and get it fixed? Diverted Neutral current is caused by some break in the DNO supply cable conductor, before the current gets to a Consumers property. This situation is in no any the responsibility of the Consumer, or in turn the Spark they have employed to do whatever at their home. The DNO surely have a responsibility to get this sorted, at least with new stuff going in and not just do the bare minimum. Making it the Consumer's problem and getting them to pay for the Fault finding is wrong in my view. Maybe when a fault is discovered by a Consumer's Spark the DNO should discount the Consumer's bill to cover the Electrician's Invoice?

This is what I thought. With Smart meters etc. In a TNCS system any earth fault....the wrong way or excessive down could be easily picked up!

and like that all DNO's would be on their ...path to become bankrupt because there would be so much work to do to fix the issues (so many issues!) that will cost THEM so much.. and this will be THE END..
