I'm 39 and have had "itis" on and off for nearly 15 years. A few things: 1) No one actually knows what causes it. The mechanical pressure / constipation thing is a THEORY and one that IMO is not well supported. I personally believe it's a result of NSAIDs or additives in processed food damaging the lining of your colon. 2) It is an incredibly serious condition that can ruin your life similar to Crohn's or IBD. 3) They give out ABX like candy for it even though the literature admits it only helps in complicated cases. 4) Due to overuse of ABX I got Cdiff, lost 80 lbs, and nearly died. 5) The surgery is advertised as a "cure" but the disease often returns if lifestyle changes aren't made. 6) Dr Greger ultimately saved my life with a WFPB diet, though I also had to reduce gluten and alcohol.

I remember back in '07 after reading yet another article finding more bad things that happen from processed foods (and then another study talking about yet more unexpected good things from eating whole foods). And it was very clear that every year it was the same: we find out the processed foods are unhealthy for us in more unexpected ways, while unprocessed foods do the opposite. I know so many people (in the US) who seem positively afraid of whole foods. I try to mention casually about just adding a handful of greens when cooking/eating (and build from there), getting into the habit of eating fruit every day, but it's such a bizarre (and unwelcome) thought to them. Most kids aren't getting a serving of broccoli and piece of fruit at lunch either, you'd think we'd value our kids enough to nourish them but no.

Somewhat of a vague hypothesis for the observed left/right difference in the colon: Both the entrance to as well as the exit from the colon are the regions of the colon, where most fecal matter will likely accumulate during digestion and transport through the piping. At the entrance matter has to be pushed upwards by the colon against gravity and the impact of daily activity, while on the left side gravity pushes matter downwards where it then accumulates before being expelled in larger bits at once. Within the more or less horizontally aligned part of the colon, fecal matter will most likely spend the least amount of time. Given this, there emerges a heat-map of fecal matter contacttime with the colon wall and where constipation and therefor pressure is most likely to occur. These are then also the areas, where potentially toxic or otherwise harmful substances as well as bacteria would be most likely to accumulate resulting in a bias for these types of intestinal wall diseases to either occur on the left or the right side, with fairly little chance in between the two in comparison. It could be, given that western diets and asian diets still differ quite significantly, that some components or ratios of such in their diet, for example some types of fiber that are more commonly consumed in asia compared to the west have different or differently strong effects on how or how well fecal matter gets transported through the colon. If for example a certain type or amount of fiber alters the movement dynamics within the colon in such a way, that fecal matter spends more time at the entrance compared to the exit of the colon, that nuance alone could be causing the difference, because the material only really has the chance of either getting stuck on the left, or the right, meaning slight persistent differences in diet over lifetime could make up for different exposure times at these two regions of the colon. Just a few thoughts on that, although I don't know enough about the statistical concrete difference between western and eastern overall diets at the time of the study to think of any specific things that could be causing the side-bias.

Unrelated video ideas: 1. would we not still need farms to some degree because of pets needing food, 2. Ive heard about bone char being used in the process of some sugars (not sure where in the world) but wouldnt that mean some seemingly vegan treats may not be vegan? I would assume companies have to make sure theyre using sugar that hasnt been processed using bone char however it may be slightly overlooked as well as people looking for vegan options, seeing something that seems to be vegan and gwtring it not knowing that ir may not be fully vegan. Another interesting video. I think Asians generally don't have constipation so much as Westerners due to their diet being higher in fiber. Therefore, if they were going to get diverticula anywhere, it would be in the right large intestine where the food has to go against gravity. Westerners are so constipated, that everything backs up just before the rectum, where they strain and strain. Who can forget that Saturday Night Live skit about "anal retension?"

No oils or added sugar, tons of fruit and veggies, some legumes and (sweet) potatoes, mushrooms, kabocha squashes, lots of salads and soups, very low fat, no processed food. I am petite so, although I wish I could eat more carbs (wholegrains, beans, etc.) which may help with constipation, I have to be careful or my weight will go up immediately

They need to do a lot more research on the cause. I suffered for almost a week in hospital where they only served me carrots, pumpkin, white rice and soy milk every day for every meal cause that was the only vegan food they had. I started to refuse to eat. I never want to be in hospital again but all the things they recommend to avoid it, is the way I live daily anyway. I’m lost 😢

I was vegan for twelve years solely for ethical reasons towards other animal species and the planet, but I couldn't take all the intestinal problems it caused me anymore. So, I decided to reintroduce the least cruel animal sources possible: fish, shellfish, and the occasional egg. However, my diet is still predominantly vegetarian. Despite following all the precautions suggested by scientists like Dr. Greger and Dr. Bulsiewicz, I continue to have issues that completely disappeared during the short period I was fully carnivorous. However, the reasons for following a vegan diet outweigh the discomfort I have to endure.

I am sure Dr Bulsiewicz did a video or more than one where he talks about constipation on a vegan diet, google the pcrm channel and do a search, it should come up. If I remember correctly I think he said to eat more carbs and fewer veggies/greens because a lot of WFPB eaters may be overdoing the veggies to lose weight and not eat enough carbs (wholegrains, potatoes and sweet potatoes, winter squashes) and legumes. Thank you on behalf of the animals

The right side then being from the masculine side of our heritage. It would be nice if scientific instruments could be created to measure these subtle energies as the emotional damage is occuring so as to scientifically verify what is happening exactly.
