What to do in all countrys: 1) Use your brain 2) Be polite
@DivertLiving6 жыл бұрын
This is true!
@adventuroustravelearth54936 жыл бұрын
One can use their brain but if one does not know the cultures rules and conduct, off course one will offend/screw up. You are attention seeking. If you don't know the countries rules and customs what good is POLITE? POLITE may be ok for wester standards but in Thailand will get you in big trouble... Your comment was without thought

Actually that was one of the biggest moments this year so far. I had my birthday on naka bucha day and we went to the temple. I’ve never done that before. I knew that i have to take off my shoes. One of the monks seen me struggle getting out of my shoes ( I’m in a wheelchair and have special shoes that i need to even pass the entrance. I didn’t even expect him to talk to me ( in English!) but after he seen me even trying he said "buddha understand". This will be unforgettable for me. A really special moment for a farang who is only a guest in the country

In the 12 years I have lived here this is arguably one of the finest videos I've seen that explains the basics of Thai culture. There are many other things that could have been discussed, but this video hits all the big ones and explained them very well. Although I will say I'm surprised you did not talk about the practice of wai. Perhaps it is because if you screw it up, and most foreigners do, Thais will usually see it as cute and funny, but not offensive.

Thank you David! That means a lot to us! Where in Thailand do you live?

Great informative video. Nice to hear from a Thai nationala about almost everything I was wondering about. This is my 27th time to visit Thailand but the only time i've been in Bangkok more than a day. The hospitality and good nature of Thai people alone have kept ne feeling positive despite being alone on this trip. I find the Thai people to be genuinely kind and polite. So nice to be here, i hope next time i come visit would be for vacation. Gotta bring the kids next time! Thanks guys

When I was in Koh Samui in 2004, I tried to use a bum-gun for the first time in my bungalow but I missed my bum and ended up spraying the ceiling. I was guilty of flushing toilet paper in Thailand; I made sure I flushed them in smaller pieces than what I would flush in the states. Thank God, I never clogged any toilets there! Nice video guys! Thumbs Up.

I am truly amazed hearing that the Thai People's Culture very similar as with Malaysian Culture especially shoes is left at the entrance of the home. I truly agree with this. Whether there is a sacred image or an Altar placed in the home, Asians believes very clearly that every home is a dwelling place of God and it is to be kept clean, neat and tidy.

In the Philippines too, people there are the nicest in the world but they have what they call “Onion skin” (meaning that they easily get hurt or insulted) and the revenge can be fatal. So it’s important to be always respectful dealing with them. It’s not a fast pace culture, they take their time so don’t yell when things are slow. Be always respectful in any situation.

While living in Thailand I found a Thai man sneeze into a handkerchief that was made like the American Flag. I went over to him pointed to the handkerchief and said "Mai dee mak mak I am american"! and without the Krup! I hope he got the message! The american flag has meaning in its colors and stars as well, people died for those colors! Saying this because the disrespect goes both ways. I lived here for 20 years and also went back to the states to remind me of USA values. I agree that fa-rang wear way too little clothing in the beach towns, they need to cover up! Also fear of eating at the street stalls is sad because the food is great and cheap! Note 7-11's are everywhere, if you need something quickly. Gas stations are like mini malls, and that's cool! We clean our butts with water only, sorry get use to it. Also don't get offended by the tee shirts, they say some really rude things IN ENGLISH and you could get rather offended. When you sit down don't cross your legs so the sole of your foot points at someone, NO NO! When you enter a family's home and you see the oldest women there say "Ma, Sa wa dee Krup", It shows you respect the matriarchal structure of the home. You can eat the spicy food if you ask for a glass of coke to go with it, I don't know why but the coke or Pepsi cuts the pain of the spice on your tongue (I do it all the time). Watch for traffic when walking, the pedestrian does not always have the right of way, sorry this is not America! It gets hot in Thailand I mean really hot but one way to cool off that I use is put a wet and cold wash cloth on the back of your neck, then try to sit in front of a fan or near one. Its amazing how that cools down your body. Also there are ices you can buy (Si nam keng) that help reduce the body heat to deal with the weather. People here carry umbrellas to keep the sun off them and they lay under a tree at the beaches, they love having white skin. You will laugh when you see how they eat their KFC meals ... with spoon and fork. They don't have knives so use your spoon as a knife. Oh and there are A LOT of american chain restaurants in Thailand, try to stay away from them otherwise you are missing the point. Note, stairs are not built to USA regulations so be careful, it will take getting use to. Not to end on a bad note but when you are at a grocery store and in line to purchase your stuff, someone may push their cart into your back, ITS SO ANNOYING but just try to tolerate it. They don't understand the need for private space as we do in the USA! Maybe say something in a nice way like "paw lauw" meaning: enough already!

@@DivertLiving you see Jimmy, not sure if this is true but i think that all SE Asia toliets are very weak when it flushes and can flush the toilet paper down since most of them or all uses the little sprayer or the bucket with the handle on it to rinse off. We who lived in US most or all lur life are used to toilwt paper amd flushing them. Lol. But yeah, that was a embarassing moment but my wofe and her family played it out where it was normal and made me feel ok not embarrassed even though in my head i was like, DANG IT! This is the most embarrassing thing ive done here in SE Asia. Hahahahaha 😅😂😂😂😜

ridiculous advice, if you're not upsetting anyone in your own country with your actions you won't upset anyone here either, don't touch strangers on the head is good advice in any country. Come to Thailand, relax and enjoy yourself

As an Indian the Thai customs are not alien. Some of the points here made are very relevant and obvious to India. But indeed very informative and detailed video. Tnx.

Consideration for others in America is rare I can't wait to go to Thailand ☺️

At first I was like: OMG another American trying to explain cultural do´s and dont´s without knowing what they’re talking about. BUT you guys, as a mixture raced couple nailed it. My husband is from Udon Thani and I am German. He came to Germany when he was six, so he’s pretty westernized I would say while his mom still has a lot of Thai habits. I even told him not to point his feet towards his dad the other day lol. All points you mentioned are very true. I just wanna add that Thai people really appreciate you being attentive when it comes to personal needs. You even need to offer things more than once, because they are polite and don’t wanna cause any inconvenience. Germans are known for being the most straight forward communicating country. We even have a quote saying: There’s nothing to complain about and it’s used as a compliment LOL. Imagine you cooked food and the other person says it after tasting it. I love our diversity, we learn from each other and get to pick the best parts of each culture.

Do they have handicap accessible transportation, like city buses, with wheelchair ramps there? I just fell in love with this country, and the video isn't even over yet.

As I am Thai person everything you have mention in this video is very true. One things you have to mind when you travel to Thailand and many Asian countries personal space are very limited when you on public area like public transport and etc. Also try not to judge gender from the way they look. I have tell this to lot of my Aussie people who travel to Thailand. Especially Aussie men they can be narrow mind. Especially when they see guys do things like a lady. They will thing you straight away these guys are gay. In many Asian countries is not the case.
