The older buildings are called shophouses. For a while the Singaporean government was encouraging their destruction. Then people realized that Singapore's history was being swept away in the name of modernity. Fortunately, the shophouses are now protected heritage sites.

Believe it or not, Singapore is not as expensive as you might think, provided you know where to look, you can eat dirt cheap, for $3-4 SIN and visit places free the public transportation is very inexpensive and extremely efficient, so get yourself an MRT Card fill it up and you can use it for years as I did, I visited in 2015 kept my card and used it this year on my recent trip. Believe me, Singapore is way cheaper than many American cities such as NYC, SF and most Alaskan cities like Anchorage, ever go there, well you better take a bag of cash cause its so expensive for tourists? 👍🏼

The Kampong Glam district is certainly not mainly named after "Indonesian / Malaysian Islands", just because one of them is called Bali Lane. Here's a complete list of all the roads there: Bali Lane (Island in Indonesia) Haji Lane (Muslim who has been to Mecca as a pilgrim) Arab Street (Arabia) Muscat Street (City in Oman) Bussorah Street (likely Basrah in Iraq) Kandahar Street (City in Afghanistan) Baghdad Street (City in Iraq) Sultan Gate (reference to a gate to a former palace) Pahang Street (State in Malaysia) Aliwal Street (a family name) Jalan Pinang (Penang: State in Malaysia) Jalan Pisang (Banana) Jalan Kledek (Keledek: Sweet potatoes) Jalan Kubor (There's a graveyard nearby) Jalan Klapa (kelapa: Coconut)

Love your video. It's pretty informative and you guys are genuine. 1) Other than toast and chee Cheong fun (rice noodle roll), locals enjoy eating our staple food (rice and noodle) for breakfast e.g. Nasi lemak, porridge, congee, laksa. 2) The proper way to doing offerings to the deities in the temples will still be the incense sticks. Cigarettes are just not right. Pretty disrespectful to offer that to the other deities. 3) Jaywalking is a really not recommended. Reason why the people in video did that is because they are hurrying to work and there's no traffic light or underpass nearby. It's game over for you if you get hit by the car. Although our drivers are generally courteous here, you just need one driver who's not paying attention and that's it.

@25:05 These are the page numbers of the different sections of food items, not their prices! It can't be that cheap in Haji Lane area. By the way, it's amazing how you guys can cover so many places within the same day!

Kampong Glam used to be famous among Malays. But since the Malay Heritage Centre is there, the guy brought you there. He should bring you to Geylang Serai for more varieties of Malay stuffs and food.

The Sultan Mosque area that you visited…. The entire area comprising of the mosque and the shophouses, all the way to another smaller mosque near Jalan Sultan, was once palace grounds of the Sultan (king) of early Singapore. Beside the above-mentioned small mosque is a Malay cemetery for the royals back then. Not many locals know of the existence of the cemetery right in the heart of the city. You might be able to find a few pictures of it on the internet.

Hi, Thanks for all your tips. I saw a video of yours about travel insurance. You mentioned one is better than another in one of your Singapore videos. Would that be Nomad insurance?

Most Malays are at Paya Lebar area. Places like Joo Chiat complex, Tanjung Katong complex, Pasar Geylang. Bali Lane is just a tourist area where you have a more middle eastern food available there. Malay food can be found at Pasar Geylang, Indian food at Tekka hawker and Chinese food at Chinatown hawker centres. As for Eurasians, I'm not sure though. These are the four races in Singapore. :)

For the pricier cost of staying in singapore what you get is safety, infrastructure, variety of food, public transport and friendly locals. Every city has its merits i guess. I would say its worth it especially safety my friend.

A hawker centre stall has to be slightly grimy haha... the cleanest ones most of the time dont serve the best food. Your videos about Singapore are some of the best I've seen. Down to earth and simple.
