In Byron Bay we have two historical shipwrecks in very shallow water just 100 to 15t0 metres from shore. Both came to grief in almost the same location, tied up to the original jetty which operated as a whaling port and cargo port for various ships over 100 years ago. Both broke their moorings in strong winds and sand almost where they were positioned.
The Wollongbar was a 100 metre long vessel while the Tassie III was one third the length of the Wollongbar.
Both wrecks are visible from google maps and in clear water they are both wonderful wrecks to scuba dive or snorkel on.
The problem in this area is the location is generally very swelly and surgy so both snorkelling and scuba diving are only good on calm days.
