Fun fact: The boys are usually credited as lyricists in most of their songs w/ several languages in, but in Gayuma in particular, Mo is credited as its producer G22'S AJ is the Techno Babaylan (Ancient term for priestess) but actually a Manggagayuma (witch/potion brewer) in Gayuma Litz' Fatima (disbanded sister group of Alamat) plays the Aswang (folklore monster in the Philippines) :)

The Kasmala video references two events. One is the exhibition of Filipinos at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri USA, where they were treated like specimens at a zoo. The other is the Watsonville riots in California in 1930, where white mobs attacked Filipino farm workers because they were afraid Filipinos were taking their jobs and their women.

@@HSMKY-k4e There is a Pinoy historian named Kirby Araullo who reacted to Alamat’s Kasmala (and some of their other mv’s). He has the reactions on his KZbin channel. Watching them was eye-opening to me as a Filipino-American, born and raised. It was upsetting to learn about, but I also knew that I couldn’t stay angry about it because it was in the past. I’m 67 now, and the world for my children and grandchildren is a lot more diverse and accepting, thankfully.

ALAMAT’s ABKD and ILY-ILY are also nice songs and has a great meaning behind it. I agree at what you said that Alamat is not afraid to show a different kind of concept. That’s why they are one of a kind. You can feel that they are proud of our culture and where they come from. Aswang is a mythical creature in the Philippines that has a long tongue. You've got it right Sammy, most if not all of their MVs are packed. One watch is not enough or you'll miss most of the details especially since they put in so many cultural aspects in them. Their attires are always partly inspired by either traditional wear or otherwise modern clothing but with traditional fabrics. Very underrated group.

Aswang and Gayuma are some of the many of superstitious beliefs in the Philippines. For me I believe it’s true. Aswang is some sort of shape shifter Ghoul/Vampire/monster. And Alamat was singing how they fell in love with this monster and she can devour them anytime. Gayuma-is a love potion, The lady in the video is “Aj from G22 (deep voice girl). she was like an enchantress that Allured Alamat. The potion effect was steamy, blurry, hazy thus the effects on the visual and voices in the video. I mean even the sexy dancing was just on the spot.

Alamat's discography is so original and dope. Love everything about them, especially my baby Mo.. omg don't get me started with his insanely sensual r&b vocals and swag visuals! 😍🥰😘 Plus they're the only group who sings 7-8 languages out of the 180 Philippine languages. That's powerful representation, start getting radio stations to play non-tagalog songs. Sometimes I dont understand a thing they're singin but I stan them so badly. I've been into P-POP and OPM recently and I'm hooked!

Say U Love Me is probably one of my fave Wish Bus performances. Mo actually wrote Gayuma himself so in the Wishbus performance, he added an exclusive verse at the end that you won't hear performed anywhere else. ILY ILY is also a fantastic Wish Bus performance but I feel like you need one video that's just ILY ILY - MV and Wish Bus. Because that song is a wild adventure. In terms of live performances, seeing Aswang danced on stage is a real treat that the MV can't really do justice. Find any recent high quality fancam of a live event. My suggestion is MLBB (Mobile Legends: Bang Bang) event.

The song lyrics are in different Filipino dialects (Tagalog, Cebuano, Kapangpangan, etc.). When the Philippines became a colony of America, tribal Filipinos were exhibited in the World Fair in St. Louis, Missouri as savages. In reality, different regions of the Philippines have developed cultures and civilizations. The white figures are Americans (white). Some places in America during that time are segregated between white and black America.

It validates the legitimacy of American colonization to educate the "savages who are not fit to govern themselves" ["Manifest Destiny"]. In reality, the First Philippine Republic has a constitution, post offices, national army, taxation system, monetary system, etc. There was an economy in the process of transforming the Philippines into a developed country at the turn of the 20th century.

🇵🇭 You might have missed some of the context in Aswang MV, because it seemed that you turned off the available English captions or subtitles for the MV. For some context and additional information, an "aswang" (ahs-WAHNG) is an umbrella term for native shape-shifting evil beings or creatures in Philippine or Filipino folklore and mythology that's generally and commonly translated into English as "monster", although a "monster" in Filipino is generally a "halimaw" (ha-LEE-mahw) instead of more specifically an "aswang". For more precise and better parallel categories with Western folklore and mythology, "aswangs" are categorized into five categories: vampires, self-segmenting viscera suckers, weredogs or transforming/shape-shifting huma-beast hybrids, witches or ghouls. By the way, the self-segmenting viscera sucker category of "aswangs" is the inspiration of SB19's Mana. In the MV, they used the concept of an "aswang", which in the MV is presented as of the vampire or vampiric category of "aswangs" (but are different in the Philippines compared to the Western vampires, as these "aswangs" are commonly disguising as beautiful women by the day commonly to attract or lure men as their common victims or to be their husbands and later victims, and then transform into a vampire-like or vampiric creature or being at night to suck blood slowly through their proboscis-like tongue until the victims are drained out of their blood, instead of their fangs, canine teeth, or by sucking the blood through the mouth after puncturing the neck of the victim with the fangs or canine teeth like the Western vampires), as a metaphor and symbolism for a toxic woman in a toxic relationship with her man, with the man being trapped with her in that toxic relationship just because of his blind love and of him being submissive, subservient and/or also masochistic to her (At least that's how I understand the lyrics' meanings and denotations in relation to the title, theme and concept of the "aswang" creature or being, and it as a character, metaphor, symbolism and inspiration, and in relation to relationships). I reckon PPop's musical experimentation comes natural and effortless coz of the mix of cultures embedded in our history. From our indigenous tribes to the Malays, our Polynesian ancestors. The Arabs, Indians, and Chinese.Then the Spaniards and other Latino race in the Galleon trade, then the Americans. All these cultures reflect in our languages, dances, vocal styles, etc. We don't need to copy trends tbh coz we're more than that, we just have to go back to our roots!

one thing to know about ALAMAT is that most, if not all of their videos, songs, outfits, and choreography promote a part of Philippine history and culture so it's really fun seeing people be amazed by the visuals and the meaning of the songs! For instance, Kasmala tackles a lot about how Filipinos were dehumanized by colonizers (similarly to their other song Dagundong which was more centered around how the Philippines was colonized). Aswang is a type of supernatural creature in the Philippines akin to vampires, who often have different types and, just like vampires, remain unsuspecting to normal humans until night falls. All in all, rlly looking forward to seeing you immerse yourself in the culture as well through ALAMAT!
